    The pool should get better now that the SHARKS also PGHs 14th pick.

    Hey Professor,
    Thanks for the updated look. Considering where the Sharks are in Grier's plan for me THE most exciting thing is to watch as Grier and his team stuff more and more prospects into every pipeline that leads to the NHL. After just two seasons the cupboard is not full yet its not bare either! I am very excited to see how many more prospects Grier can add this off-season and of course in particular what our top picks will yield.
    I recently looked to see which NHL teams have yet to have the number 1 pick in the draft and most of those teams are recent expansion teams and a few like us who have not been around all that long (Anaheim comes to mind specifically). Then there is Vancouver... I was shocked to see that in all the time that they have been an NHL club they have never won the top pick!
    Being mathematically challenged myself I have been acknowledging that we only have a 25% chance to win the lottery but, at the same time pointing out that our turn is coming because we have never had the top pick so sooner or later our number has to come up...then there is Vancouver.... Yikes. That sort of brings the situation back to stark reality. Yes, statistically if you put your name in the hat enough sooner or later your number will come up but, the whole Vancouver thing points out that it is still completely possible to defy the odds for a long time.
    That said I have to admit that I have no clue how many times in there history Vancouver has had a decent shot at the NHL lottery's top pick? Also, Vancouver has been around a lot longer than the lottery. The NHL didn't start the lottery until 1995 so the window of frustration for Vancouver is only since that time. In that time I am not sure how often they wound up having a chance in the lottery beyond the Sedin twins when they picked 2nd and 3rd overall that year I just don't know?
    Hope springs eternal for the woebegone it is said (by me hahaha). Thanks again Professor and I hope all is well in your world man.

      Hi Pete. They actually held the #1 pick in the Sedin draft year but traded down with Atlanta so they could pick the Sedins back to back. Atlanta drafted Patrick Stefan who in retrospect was a bust so Vancouver won that trade hands down

      @@steviep3079 Thanks Steve. I remembered that Vancouver worked a serious trade to acquire the #2 and 3 pick that year to pick the brothers but, didn't remember they had the #1 over all. The site I found that listed the teams who had never drafted #1 over all may have considered that the same thing as never having picked #1 since they traded it away? Who knows?
      Its interesting to me that when you mentioned the Patrick Stefan I had never hear of him so before I finished the sentence my initial reaction was well that trade worked for Vancouver just fine. hahaha

    Professor, Ovi is def more then just a pure goal scorer lol but if he’s anything like the great 8, we’d be very lucky

    A smart move might be to loan Musty for one season to Frölunda in the SHL to play one season with Edstrom on the same team. Moritz Seider also played one year in the SHL and really made huge strides in that year in this league. If Musty cannot secure a roster spot with the Sharks after 8 games, I would prefer that instead of sending him bach to the OHL.

      It’s an interesting idea, you mention Seider having done so, but he had played games in the German professional league in his draft year and AHL games the year after before going on loan to Sweden. Not to mention that Seider is European, so he might feel more comfortable overseas. With Musty, an SHL loan would be his first taste of professional hockey, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but is there precedence for a North American player going over like that?

      @@professorhockey The thing with Musty is that you hear from many Sharks-related media and podcasters (I'm sure you know all of them as well) that Musty probably will not really benefit optimally from another season in the OHL. I have the same impression. He also is not eligible to play in the AHL. He should get his nine games in case he earns them in camp and preseason. He is probably physically mature enough to play professional hockey against grown men. Whether he is mature in all the non-physical aspects that are required to be able to live and play abroad has to be weighed by the Sharks' development staff and by him. That is only relevant in case they have to make the decision to send him back to the OHL if the staff thinks a full season in the NHL is too much at his current state of development. Whether it is then the SHL, the DEL, the Finnish league, or Swiss-A is secondary. It is important in that case that they are confident he will get relevant minutes and that the European team takes care of the younger players away from the ice. That is why I came up with Edstrom's team because he would have someone to lean on, and the Sharks would be in contact with Edstrom's development.

      @@professorhockey Indeed, I am German and became a Sharks fan the day Marco Sturm was drafted by the Sharks. At that time, I was still a season ticket holder with the now Mannheim Eagles before MERC Mannheim. The good thing is that no games will be blacked out on NHL_TV. Also, with AHL_TV, I can see all games of the Barracuda. You just have to stay away from US news until you find the time to watch the games because I would not recommend watching games at 4:00 am on a regular basis.

    What do you think of Robins? Any shot of making the NHL roster? He’s had a rough go around in the AHL

    • @professorhockey
      @professorhockey  4 месяца назад

      I had some hope for him, but this season wasn’t great. He’s very far down the depth charts now, pretty low chance he makes it at this point

    Do you think Gushin will be a full time NHLer next year or another year in the AHL?

    • @professorhockey
      @professorhockey  4 месяца назад +2

      I think he will be given the type of opportunity that Bordeleau was given this year. Which is to say Gushchin will be given a couple games to start, and if he does well, he will stay in the lineup. If I were a betting man though, I’d put money on him still playing a sizeable chunk of the season in the AHL though

      Gushing would need to score LOTS of goals and have a decent plus/minus rating. Undersized players is one thing we don't really need too many more of.
