Absolutely superb. Very well done. Brilliant camera work, no voice over required. I have learnt so much, as no narrow boats are on the Royal Canal where I live.
Beautiful boat, great handling of it in the locks! Especially liked you using the forward momentum of the boat to pull the lock gate closed as you were entering.....pretty smooth!
Nice to see the old skills being employed. I remember in the early days of hire boating on the Grand Union in the 1960's watching the remaining working boats doing the same. Back then the lock gates had bollards fitted to them to facilitate closing them with the boats. As hirers we were instructed not to copy them. Same applied to not dropping the paddles. There was far less maintenance of the canals back then.
There is a gorgeous bolinder in narrow boat clover an absolute credit to the owner who certainly is not the self proclaimed rudest man on the waterways.
Working down from Kidsgrove in the rain! Great memories with Maple over the years between 1984 and 2012. In the early days the stove was always on at the back with some excellent coal from Wulfrona in Wolverhampton.

Is it me or are you travelling on the right side through the locks unlike auto traffic that drives on the left. The (what sounds like a hit-n-miss) engine would drive me crazy.
Engine cut out whilst entering lock exciting boating Lock closing trick old boating skills to save time on travel Weather snow rain wind Hardy folk on these working boats Keep safe and dry and virus free
A little more consideration for lock gates and gear wouldn't hurt! Yes, you may argue that they equipment can handle it, but it shouldn't have to. The CRT already struggles with maintenance, every boater should be doing whatever they can to ensure they help equipment last as long as possible between rebuilds. That means not using gates to stop the boat, not dropping paddles heavily. After all, why are you in such a rush?
Nice bit of lock gate bashing and paddle smashing. Typical lack of care as usually seen from anyone with classic boats. Its not the 1920 with 1000s of staff to fix everything any more. Worse than first time hireboaters the classic boat crowd. Should pay double license fee the lot of you.
Do you know what ? I usually love the old chug chug chug engines, but this one with it's erratic running sounds horrible ! I can't even watch the videos. Rotary engines that surge idle do the same thing to me, i guess it's because a surging engine to me, usually means there is a problem. Engines with a governor that surge usually have a fuelling or ignition problem so i guess i am conditioned to not like the sound of surging or mis-firing engines.
Lord Belvoir why are you commenting at all ? Bolinders don't normally sound like this, they usually miss a beat every five or so revolutions but this misses a half a dozen revolutions before firing again.& i TOTALLY explained my reasoning FFS ! People like you make me wanna 😡💥

Love how he closes the lock gates with the rope... never seen that before. Love the videos
Fantastic bit of skill.
great footage, loved the old style ropework, a long forgotten art!

OK to fast-drop the paddles today? I was under the impression that that was bad practice in any case!

love the videos! I'm an American young adult and I dream of owning a traditional narrow boat to retire on.
Thanks for that. I don't think I could put up with that engine keep cutting out. Helped me cope with lockdown. Please stay safe and post what you can.
Best narrow boat video ive seen brilliant 👍👍👍👍class.

How old is this lock system? Two hundred years old if not older
The Trent and Mersey canal was opened in 1777, making it over 240 years old
Thank you
@@mykaskin thank you that's awesome appreciate it . Love it
I imagine the sounds of the present prevented them from hearing the sound of the past. Pity them.
Hello, does it matter that the handlebar is red, white, green?
The colours usual are part of the company livery so that you can tell from the rear which company the boat belongs to.
Thanks for your video Sir

Yes, boating on the right and driving on the left. It's a Bolinder hotbulb engine, low revving.
Bow button fender lifted to stop fender damage...bugger the lock gates.
These boats only just fit in the lock, you would not want to risk cilling the boat, plus the stem runs smoothly down the gate.

Presumably you don't mean rotary engines as in old aviation motors, or in modern Wankels; so what rotaries do you have in mind?
