We went through this before, with volunteers. It didn't work and lasted a few weeks. Volunteers brought back after they tried to get county employees to walk dogs instead. It was a total waste of tax payer money. And the animals suffered. It all easily sunshinable. Hostile work environment complaints from many employees, volunteers and customers. Money being shifted or missing. Employees announcing they were substance impaired while working. And some of the same folks are being put back in place....and we are expecting a different outcome? It was an actual sh*t show with kennels covered in it. Inhumane.
Thank you for pointing out the absurdity of Ms Cunningham’s position and bringing some sanity to this discussion. The dogs should not suffer because of human ego.
Thank you for speaking on this subject. It's not the first time that St. LOUIS County will fir all volunteers at the animal shelter. No other animal shelter of this size could take care of dogs and cats without volunteers. But then St. Louis County doesn't care if dogs are walked or cats are cared for. Without volunteers dogs won't get out of their cages at all. Not even once a day. Cats will live in dirty litter boxes. Adoptable pets will be deemed unacceptable and they will use it as an excuse to kill them. I was a volunteer for years and was there when they fired all volunteers. I was also on the initial advisory board that they terminated abruptly. Please keep talking about this. Volunteers should be welcomed and appreciated. And more volunteers would be great. Let them do outreach if they feel the need for more diversity. But do that while allowing volunteers to stay and continue to help.
As a current volunteer, I can say I too have NO idea why my FREE help is being turned away-I don't care about County politics, I just want to help the animals. Please, if you're watching this and agree, contact your County council member, Sam Page's office, and Dr. Cunningham's office and let them know you disagree with this decision! Taxpayers do not want to see the shelter fall into the same devastating state it was in before!!
Today, on Thanksgiving Day, volunteers walked 180 dogs. Do you think your Animal Control Officers could do that on a holiday, or any day, without volunteers? Or are you planning on hiring people specifically to make sure that every dog gets out at least once a day? It's a valid question.

Why would Dr. Cunningham bring diversity/DEI/WOKE into the pound and volunteers?
Last call is proof positive DB should extend to at least 45 minutes to one hour.
