What's your favourite overhead style racing game? 😇🕹👌 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= More from 1992: tinyurl.com/1992-C64-GAMES My Top Picks: tinyurl.com/CCGS-BEST-GAMES
That scrolling speed is great. Reminds me a bit of Supercars for Amiga. I bought my Amiga 500 in 1991 after two years of delivering newspapers. I was tired of sharing our 64 with my brother and sisters, so I wanted my own. In 1996 I bought my first PC, but the Amiga was stiil in use after that. I still have it and still use it from time to time.
Yeah it's pretty similar but much faster than supercars. I did a review of Super Cars II on the channel, love that game. Also search for 'Indy Heat'... another great game also on the channel. All on the racing games playlist - some greats there 😇🕹👍🏁🏁
Bought this in the fall of 93 after owning a C64 for more than 9 years and an Amiga for 5 years and was greatly impressed by how great this cheap little game played and looked. Played it a lot.
Sadly, by 1992 I'd not only left the C64 behind, I'd even left my Amiga 500 behind and bought my first PC (386DX-40Mhz, 4mb RAM 105mb HDD) the joys of Wing Commander, Wolfenstein 3D and especially Star Control II were not to be denied! This looks like a solid little racer and reminds me in many ways of The Last V8, even in it's soundtrack! Time to bust it out on VICE and see how it handles. Thanks Cheeky!
I think you'll enjoy this one. It was only when 'Doom' was released that I moved over to the PC... but then, not so long later, I discovered 'Half-Life'... wow, what a game that is 😇🕹️👌
Slippy cornering and super zippy straights.. takes a little while to master as the controls are 'loose', but it's definitely an addictive game. Superb to play this once again for the video 😇🕹👌
Loved this and also played it again recently where I’m still good at it and can get the Maclaren. It’s still in the muscle memory much to my surprise, including the shortcuts!
I missed out on some of the best C64 games that came out towards the end of it's commercial life since I owned an Amiga by then, this was when some programmers had learnt to squeeze every last drop out of the now aging hardware to make C64 games look as much 16 bit as possible despite the limitations, sometimes they failed miserably, other times the games were ground breaking. Love how Codemasters put "New Release" on the box.
Codemasters definitely had some 'forward thinkers' in their marketing team... but to plaster 'New Release' on every single game probably wouldnt be allowed now haha. Maybe a removable sticker on the front... but they hard-printed it directly onto the inlay, so even though this game is 32 years old it's still a new release for those who see it for the first time haha 😇🕹️👌
It's certainly challenging, but satisfying when you can swap cars with faster and more powerful cars near the end... the difficulty levels are just perfect 😇🕹️👌
This looks like a fun little game. By this time, I had switched over to the PC I needed for school, so I wasn't collecting as many C64 games at the time. This reminds me a bit of Racing Destruction Set... but faster and without the ramps and weapons.
It still holds up as a great game too, pretty challenging and super 'slick'.. ad the title suggests! It actually lives up to its name... which was unusual for a codemasters boast on their cassette inlays! 😁🕹👍🏁🏁
Looks great. I'll have to check it out , I'm sure I've got it somewhere. As u say lots 9f us by 92 had swapped to the amiga , snes , megadrive Love these top down view games
They're easy to pick up and play aren't they. I particularly enjoyed the single screen top down racers as I could always see what turns were coming next... but in this game, the cornering was something you'd need to learn as part of trial and error, which was a good replayability factor 😇🕹️👌
At that point my C64 was no more, unfortunately. I would've liked this one, I love top-down racers. I am an avid Micro Machines fan, and this one supposed to be compensation for not having MM on C64. Seems to me that some tweaking of driving mechanics into Rally Speedway kind of thing - would've made it truly amazing. Having cool visuals of former, and smooth driving in later - winning combo. And perhaps adding some manager aspects, like tweaking cars, tires, engines. Some oil marks and other physical obstacles on the road, pitstops,... yap, I know, this was made to be clean little racer. But game engine is so good that we really want some next CarWars game - yes, put canons and rocket launchers there. Kids love that!
Ivan 'Ironman' Stewarts Super Off-Road was another game I loved for the Commodore 64, because you could upgrade your vehicles after each race - but the ability to swap cars was a nice touch with this game and kept the challenges fresh 😇🕹️👌
Yeah I think a lot of C64 owners would have migrated over to the Amiga by this stage, but Slicks is a game worth coming back for, to fire it up and give it a whirl ... very addictive and a nice challenge 😇🕹️👌
Yeah, such an easy game to get into as the speed is pretty decent and the competition is always fair yet challenging. I like this game, in retrospect I should have awarded this with a big thumbs up really 😇🕹👌
Now we're talking. Possibly the last game I bought (or it could have been creatures 2) on the c64 before moving to an A600. Happy days in the twilight of the c64 waiting on very few new games and hoping the covertapes on the few surviving (and thinning) magazines had something of interest.
Some good memories from the latter days of the C64. At this stage I had boxes upon boxes of games... felt a shame to move to the Amiga and start my collection all again. But little did I know just how awesome the continuation of the journey was to become! 😇🕹👍💾🖱
It's a bit of a steep learning curve judging how much joystick to push for the cornering. But after 2 or 3 goes it becomes muscle memory and then the fun starts 😇🕹👍🏁
never played it back in the day as i'd already moved on to the Amiga, played it fairly recently and it's a cracking little game kinda sad i missed it back then.
It's great in 2 player mode too even though scoring against your opponent happens very frequently. But when you get an evenly matched 2nd player the races can become intense! A shame I had nobody to play with for the video to showcase this in better detail 😇🕹👍🏁
As far as I know, this game was never released for Amiga (or PC etc ...) . Reason being that 2D top down games were becoming obsolete. Year before Microprose released their Formula One Grand Prix. This title run a bit sluggish on regular Amiga 500, but compared to it, Slicks look like game for children. Thus Codemasters released this only on already waning C-64, to grab some more cash but it must be said that this game was sold at discount from the start.
It wasn't sold at a discount: it was a normal budget release, which was typical for Codemasters. They released very few full price games on the 8-bit machines.
I had loads of these top down games on the Amiga. Then it sort of switched to a slightly isometric angle and thats where the graphical style really ramped up, with games like 'Skidmarks' and Team17's 'ATR Racing'. I love both of those games too by the way... definitely cover those someday 😇🕹️👌
I have never played this game before, but amazingly, it looks absolutely retrospectively brilliant on the Commodore 64 😺👍🕹️. And it's also amazing, that it came out from Codemasters - such as MICRO MACHINES 😺👍🕹️.
I think this was the last great racing game on the C64, or was it? Chase HQ II: Special Criminal Investigation came out the same year, but I don't know which came last.
Now was this on a cover tape mate? as it's all coming back but have no recollection of buying it? Or maybe a demo? Great video as allways CCG "sold a million" views 🎉🎉🎉😂
I never had this. It looks like a decently made game. Unfortunately, I've never liked top-video racing games. Even with games like Nitro on the Amiga, I always found them more frustrating than fun. While the steering is logical, when the car is facing in any direction other than up the screen, it seems like the controls are changed. The car is pointing down the screen and I want to go toward the right, which means I have to steer left. That's just counter-intuitive to me.
Thats right yeah the learning curve can be steep if you're not used to the switching of directional controls, I guess thats all muscle memory and does get easier over time 😇🕹️👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer I meant, you said the controls were arrows to turn. Did two players split one keyboard? If so, what keys allowed both players to control their car at the same time? Splitting a keyboard with my brother would have cost me fingers.
Nooo 'You need to keep your eye out for arrows on the track which sometimes help you know which turn is coming next' Slicks is joystick controlled only I'm afraid... One player game: Joystick in port two... Two player game: Joystick in both ports. Which could apply to being a cast member on Brazzers 😇🕹️👌
Ahhh thats quite nostalgic in itself then really. The last Hurrah - I cant remember the last game I bought but I'm thinking it was probably 'The First Samurai' 😇🕹️👌
What's your favourite overhead style racing game? 😇🕹👌

Definitely worth it, super 'slick'... so it definitely lives up to it's name 😇🕹️👌

Big fan of top-down racers and this never appeared on my radar. Thanks for this 🙂
Slippy cornering and super zippy straights.. takes a little while to master as the controls are 'loose', but it's definitely an addictive game. Superb to play this once again for the video 😇🕹👌
Loved Slicks. A budget title diamond.
I agree, one of the best racers on any 8-bit machine 😇🕹️👌
A latecomer but one of the very best c64 games in my rose tinted(?) memory
Superb game, runs smooth and the AI always put up a decent challenge to make for an addictive game 😇🕹️👌
Love your channel, there's so much Commodore stuff I know nothing about. Keep the hits coming
I appreciate that my friend, thankyou. Plenty more classics to come too! Next week there's some obscure games in the lineup 😇🕹👍
Wow, I never played this at all, never knew it was made..... :o The graphics are really sweet too!!
It went under the radar for me until a few years back but this is a superb title
Definitely a very 'slick' piece of programming and pixel art went into this game. Runs smoother than a babies bottom too 😁🕹👌
Loved this and also played it again recently where I’m still good at it and can get the Maclaren. It’s still in the muscle memory much to my surprise, including the shortcuts!
Nice one! I could have done with you playing this with me in 2 player mode for the sake of the video hehe. I'd have enjoyed the challenge 😇🕹👌🏁🏁

I love this game after learning about it from uk tuber osg and have been addicted since. Its a superb top down racer with a real skill ceiling

Brilliant game. I even played the demo like crazy.
Some great shortcuts (cheats?) too.
Thanks for this upload.
Superb game isn't it, for a latecomer to the Commodore 64 - a time when the programming skills amongst the developers was well and truly mastered 😇🕹️👌

Great game, one of the last ones I bought for the C64.
Addictive game and super speedy too! I like this game too😇🕹️👌
You know I didn't upgrade from my C64 until 1997 when I bought a Nintendo 64 and a Playstaion 😮
I went from C64 straight to the Amiga... then the Mega Drive the year after - but I always returned to the C64 to play on my favourite titles 😇🕹️👌
never played this myself, a neighbor had it. looks fun and hard
It's a bit of a steep learning curve judging how much joystick to push for the cornering. But after 2 or 3 goes it becomes muscle memory and then the fun starts 😇🕹👍🏁

Not my style of racer but I do like the game's presentation and style.
Very well put together game - with a decent challenge too 😇🕹️👌

I don't know, the formula proved pretty successful on the PC and Amiga with Micromachines...

?
Codemasters had some bona-fide hits for the C64 and this should have got a big thumbs up when I think about it 😇🕹👍👍👍
I wonder if this was an inspiration to Slicks'n'Slide, a Finnish DOS classic originally from 1993. At least the name is similar.
I think this was the last great racing game on the C64, or was it?
Chase HQ II: Special Criminal Investigation came out the same year, but I don't know which came last.
Chase HQ II was 90'.. but what a game that is too! One for the channel soon 😇🕹👌
Now was this on a cover tape mate? as it's all coming back but have no recollection of buying it? Or maybe a demo? Great video as allways CCG "sold a million" views 🎉🎉🎉😂
A demo of Slicks was featured on the cover tape of Commodore Format # 25 - you *might* be remembering it from there.
No, but there was a demo for it on a Commodore Format cover tape.
Yeah cover tape of Commodore format back in the day 😇🕹️👌
Don't think I played this one as I was moved on to Amiga.
Yeah these games were definitely the twilight period of the Commodore 64's hay-day 😇🕹️👌

First!!!
Let's have a race on 'slicks' and see who comes first then! 😁🕹🏎🏁
