VERSE 1
Let’s make a toast to the damned
Waiting for tomorrow
When we’re played out by the band
Drowning out our sorrows
What will become of us now, at the end of time?
We’ll be fine, you and I
Let’s draw a line in the sand
Keep it straight and narrow
We had it all in our hands
We begged and then we borrowed
What will become of us all at the end of love?
When we’ve stopped looking up?
CHORUS
You can take my heart
Hold it together as we fall apart
Maybe together we can make a spark in the stars we embark
And keep us together as the lights go dark
VERSE 2
Let’s tell the truth, just for once
Asking for an answer
Now that it’s all said and done
Nothing really matters
What will become of us all if we dare to dream?
At the end of the scene?
VERSE 3
Let’s open up to the sky
Ask it for closure
‘Least we can say that we tried
But it’s never really over
What will become of us all, at the end of the line?
Will we live? Will we die?

"Being a father didn't make me scared. It made me brave."
Beautiful quote.
@@Buzz_1991 It's the one sentence that stuck with me the most. Aside from the main theme of connection, I found Death Stranding to be a beautiful story about paternal love.
I cried like a baby the whole final part ... but Cliff was the best
Haven't played the game yet, but I can confirm that there's truth in that quote
@@TheCivildecay That's beautiful
I'm playing Death Stranding with a constant thought in my mind: What can I do to help another person?, to have that in my mind whenever I'm playing this game is just Beautiful. Thank you Kojima Sensei.
a masterpiece!!!
All that goes through my mind playing is "fuck it raining!" or "god damn it i fell in this small revine thing" or "wHerE iS mY LevEL 3 GuN"
I rebuilt every single section of road for this exact reason. I hope it helps players somehow.
Dude, yes! Look what you have done Kojima, you god damn creative genius 🥲
@@Vertignasse82 that's the beauty and theme of the game, we are not seeing each other yet we are still connected and the world will be a better place again if we are willing to help out each other!
This song be hitting different when the credits roll.
YESSS it made me fuxxing cry
Just finished the game and was crying during the credits lol
Lauren's voice is pure magic
No kidding😂
I cried for the whole 5 minutes when they rolled.
I don't care about what people say about this game, it was innovative, hopeful and refreshing. Was it slow and grinding, intimidating? Yes. But that's also what life is like, and ultimately, this is what the game is about.
Slow? whoever say the game is slow has never encountered BT in the game!
The intimidating part was why it stuck with me so much. Games like Silent Hill or Dark Souls naturally are intimidating, theyre dark and creepy and brooding. The unexpected part for DS' intimidation is that it doesn't bother to dress up like batman before it gets intimidating, its scary right out in the sun and the trees
actually, if you does not aim to 5 stars everyone, the game shouldn't be grindy at all... right? i basically rush through every BT/MULE area with vehicle without problem, only need to fight them when there is side mission to steal back the package
as for the snow mountain part, skeleton is enough to carry Sam through it
if you focus on only the story, i believe the only downside is that you might be under equipped for boss fights due to a lack of strong weapons and you lose out on useful level 3 skeletons that last practically forever and overall better
really though, kojima makes games where you shouldn't be focused on the main story
most of the charm is hidden within the cake with a lot of substories are going on in the background that you might miss (please get the pizza deliveries done before you finish the game for maximum surprise!)
total agree
Everyone who suggest that Death Stranding would be better as a movie hasn't understood how it's using gameplay to tell a story.
Some spoilers incoming:
The gameplay loop consists of 2 main parts of which people that rushed through the game (aka most reviewers and let's players)
mostly interacted with the first part: The struggle.
Everytime you progress though an unexplored path of America you are on your own.
You have to find your own path withstand the obstacles and the forces of nature to connect this part of land to the network,
unlocking footpaths where other Sams walked have before and structures that make traversing the world easier.
The second part of the gameplay loop is to contribute to this infrastructure which not only helps you,
but might help someone else as well. This is where a lot of the reward comes from in the game. Building an efficient zipline network through an area where you once had to struggle to get through is one of the most rewarding experiences I've ever had in a game.
And this is what in my opinion Death Stranding does better than most other games, where gameplay and story often seem like
they are two seperate and mostly unrelated elements. Death Stranding tells it's story through both,
cutsenes and the interactive gameplay of all the players.
It shows that if we pull our own weight and work towards a common goal we can overcome great challenges.
It isn't idealistic about the whole connection theme by suggesting that it's gonna be easy. Quite the contrary.
It's gonna be hard, and some part of the society might not be pulling in the same direction
(there's always gonna be people blocking paths, or misleading people) but if we focus on self-improvement,
we indirectly make society stronger.
If you play the game long enough you'll notice that there is a 3rd part of the gameplay loop:
Just because you and others worked hard to build the land up doesn't mean it's gonna last forever.
Without maintanance the infrastructure (and society) will start eroding.
This means we can't rest on our laurels once we think we've accomplished something.
If we do for too long everything we've built up will fall apart.
The important part is that maintanance requires less effort, but it still requires some effort and recources.
If we decide to let it fall apart we'll have to start from scratch. It's impossible to maintain everything,
so we have to choose which parts we're gonna keep and which parts we don't need anymore
as our outlook and our objectives in this world change.
Tomorrow is in OUR hands.
Your comment is one of those that probably belongs in RUclips hall of fame, considering the quality of comments you can usually find around here. Kudos to you sir :)
@@t.gracchus1786 you have the very well written and thought out post the OP made and then we have your dribble. What a contrast.
@@Darkslayer1534 guess you could say he pulled an ankle breaker. eyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
@@t.gracchus1786 DS is a little more geared towards those of us that like to chill back and are meticulous (rebuilding highways, creating massive zipline networks, and going for all of those star patches). I felt the same excitement and satisfaction from this game as I did trying to stealth only MGSV. And this is coming from someone who's rarely touched Kojima games. Kojima knew he was making a very new controversial direction with this kind of game and props to him for making a AAA title game that he purely wanted to make rather than have fan-servicing be a major factor in the production.
Wow. These are some of the comments you can find on impacting videos such as this.
Just finished the game last night with my boyfriend. The game was just incredible from beginning to end. The music was heaven-sent, the writing and acting was out of this world, and the game looks spectacular. I will miss everybody: Sam, Lou, Fragile, Mama, Lockne, Deadman, Cliff, Heartman, Die-Hardman, and even Higgs. Thank you Kojima!
It's not over at the end, I chose to keep on keeping on....
WAIT A MOMENT THIS IS FROM A GAME?... What game is this from and no wonder it has some random baby as a visual.
Death Stranding by Hideo Kojima
"I will miss everybody" mutual feelings.
This song evokes an undescribable feeling for me. Anybody else?
Sure.
The feeling of connection. It's the theme of the game. Kojima wanna make us undestood that the connection between people save more lives than everything else.
I imagine staying indoors and watching at a window while the timefall slowly destroys everything outside. And this feeling for me is understanding that you are trapped, you miss your friends, and this will probably never end... Kind of feeling of hopelessness...
Same, dude

I’ve just got home from work, sitting in the darkness of my car, the rainfall pattering on the windscreen in front of me and echoing off of the rooftop, listening to this and crying my eyes out. I lost someone dear to me recently and I feel so lost despite having a good job, a mortgage, good friends and family. I feel happy to have know her, but sad to have lost her.
This is a beautiful song.
Sorry for your loss. Some of the advice by Brad Blanton "Radical Honesty" might be of help.

Finished DS today, right today, so many years after the release. And here I am. A cinematic masterpiece, no doubt. Lots of grinding, lots of helping others, lots of mixed emotions on the gameplay. But overall I can say that Kojima sensei operates on another level, will get DS2 as soon as it's released.
Kojima sensei always fooling us into learning about history and culture for.. about 30 years now haha
Death Stranding made me love three things.
1. Mads Mikkelsen
2. Indie Pop
3. Monster Energy Drinks

Mads had always been amazing. I'm so glad he was in this game 🤗
Kojima brought out the big guns when it comes to the actors/actresses.

The only problem I have with Chvrches is that their music is literally too beautiful for me to process. I feel like it is literally beyond existing and I just can’t, they are bullying humanity with how overwhelming this stuff is 😂😭

Thanks for returning me here, dear algorithm. The song never left my mind, just went to the back. Returning here made me remember the desire to have a connection with someone, and maintain it. The struggle never ends, for a better society indeed!
Maybe it's not perfect, not by a long shot but it's so refreshing to see someone try and make something new and ambitious. All the game companies like Activision and Bethesda make the same game year after year because they are too scared to deviate from their formula. All these people hating on the game because it doesnt instantly bottle feed their short attention span.
So true man.
Not defending activision or bethesda or any greedy game company but gaming industry had become so expensive that cost hundreds of millions, making fresh and new game like death stranding is so risky. Why take risk while we can make another fifa game? No hate on fifa tho
People say game nowadays is boring, but the truth is all these creative and innovative dev get eaten by greed and capitalism. So sad.
well Bethesda does made Prey, another best game in my list, but thanks to all the controversial and "it is just Dishonored in space", it doesn't get much attention as it should be
Again, as someone who HATE grinding or exploring (I can't play any open world for few hours before found it super boring, even for great game like RDR2 or witcher 3), and I finished both DS and Prey (both completed the side missions)
@@roticanai000 my friend capitalism is the main reason why companies risk like with these games (death stranding) or even making a complete change like with the last god of war
bro activision and bethesda aren’t even game companies, they’re a joke, i don’t think by comparing to them makes this game look better, it onlg shows you’re setting the bar really low, that’s why companies get away with everything they do, it’s because people are comfortable with mediocrity
The moment when you finish this incredible game and listen to this song will never be forgotten, just watching a black screen with so many inexpressible mixed feelings. The most unique trip ever, and it will always be a close game to my heart, thank you Kojima, this is my GOTY.
I feel the same. I really hope those games out in October, Cyberpunk and other crapz ruin Death Stranding's well deserved title.
same here
It was different for sure. Rare you find unique experiences in games. Their just reboot of the same old crap, multiplier only go shoot up over and over. Ps1 and before broke new ground a lot, alas, that era of unique game creation is dying. Death stranding was most original content/story i’ve planned in 2 decades.

Just finished the story, wow, the most incredible game I've ever played, feels almost like a disservice to call it a game, it was epic
Really? holding video games at such low regards is really offensive to all who make them video games are the greatest method of story telling and entertainment and death stranding proves that.

I felt this way after completing Mass Effect 2, unrivalled game in terms of story and musical score 👍
This song feels like a goodbye. A perfect combination of hope and hopelessness. SO WHY DO I LOVE IT SO MUCH???
I've been a fan of CHVRCHES way before Mirrors Edge and Death Stranding, but I cried in excitement when I found out that they were going to be doing a song in these amazing games.
Honestly didn't even know they were in either of these games
What games?

This is seriously the most epic song I have ever heard. I'm speechless and crying.
Not many soundtracks have crushed me after playing the game that they are representing... and yet this is defiently one of them... Beautiful.
He...
The captain saved my life.
You know why they called me Die-Hardman?
Because he wouldn’t let me die.
He brought my sorry ass back home every time.
And I loved him
As much as I loved her.
And when he stared me down, that ghost, I knew.
He was here to kill me. To make it right. And why shouldn’t he?
Why didn’t he?
He couldn’t save his kid. His BB.
And that’s what brought him back.
I guess, when he saw I was trying to do my part for America,
He remembered who he was...
...and he forgave me.
God!
But I don’t deserve it, goddammit!
There is no atoning for what I’ve done!
Damn! God!
But maybe...
...maybe this is the next best thing.
Maybe he brought me back from the beach for a reason...
...one last time.
He wanted me to do this.

Like the game, this song now feels super relevant.
I get the feeling that it's the end of love, and soon no one will ever love each other again. But I'm so desperate for connection, that before love dies completely I want to completely surrender to someone just so that love continues a little longer. If everyone does this, can love continue a little longer? Or are we still doomed?
In other words, CHVRCHES nails the intended theme of the game. There's a reason Kojima cried when he listened to this. It perfectly exemplifies what he's going for with Death Stranding. I had almost no interest in the game before listening to this, but now I've been hooked.

I played this song to death when it came out. A couple years later I got a PS5, my first console since the PS2 haha… So yeah obviously I got Death Stranding, so I’m playing away well aware that this song is in the game thinking I’m going to hear it any minute now… as time went on I ended up thinking the song just maybe for whatever reason didn’t make the final cut and I eventually completed the game… So you can imagine how elated I was when the credits started and this started blasting haha… I should’ve known Kojima would save the best for last !
I haven't even touched the game yet but I'm already super emotional, it's been such a journey from the very first teaser trailer at E3 2016 to tomorrow when the game is released. Hearing this song with the visuals makes me choke up even though I've had no part in the making of the game.

Holy hell this song is a metaphor for the game listen to lyrics.
"Let's make a toast to the damned, waiting for tomorrow" refers to the timeline where Mads Mikkelson's character is still alive and humanity is facing some world ending calamity.
"Let's draw a line in the sand, we had it all in our hands" refers to sam and emily's relationship and how even though sam doesn't feel love anymore he is hopeful.
The chorus refers to the connections humanity has to make, and how at the end we all need someone.

I’m not crying, you’re crying 😭
no u are
Im trained to cry each time i hear this song.
I love this song. I love the game. I have my own reasons why I love it. You have your own reasons why you love it. We all have our own reasons why we love it. There is no ONE mainstram thing, that all loves about it. Every note, every aspect of the song and game just plays on a diffrent and unique note of each individual. And this is one of the things I absolutely adore about DS project. If you are willing to understand it is going to catch you. It is going to linger with you. Because of your own, unique reasons. So this song, game, whole project is focusing on an individual. And it works. Which is unbelievable. It's focusing on individual but because it is so well written, composed, all individuals becomes a package, it makes us whole at the end.
this just became the biggest banger this decade, and it came out in the last half of the last year of it
This is why CHVRCHES will always be one of my favourite bands 💖 So glad Kojima asked them to produce a song for his wonderful game. They deserve so much more recognition!
Yes.
Drunk.
Still....
Yes.
i don't cry. i have to hold back tears resisting the urge to cry every single time i hear this. i don't know why. and yes i played the game and loved it. still not THAT emotional damnit.
This song hits differently after playing the game. When I heard it live at the game awards, I almost fell asleep, but after I played the game, it's emotional
I wish I could experience this game from the beginning all over again without knowing the story 😭
I love this song 😀 the version you guys released during the first UK lockdown was played more times than I can remember. I'm so looking forward to your next album 👏👏👏👏👏
