Bravo! Enjoyed watching this video. Most instructive, how he starts with line, then masses in with monochromatic color, mostly umber, maybe with a little burnt sienna or ochre, then gradually introduces local color, then gradually refines the shapes, the details, the highlights, and deepens the darks, adjusting the variations within the shadows. He obviously has a good eye for color and values. I lost count how many times he steps back to assess his painting, which is a reminder of what I need to do - step back often to properly assess the overall painting.
It depends on the media and technique you wish to apply. In acrylics and oils you can start by laying down darks /shades first. Then apply colors and tints. But you notice that he reserved large swathes of white spaces for the sky and light reflected on the water. If your spaces are well above the mid-tones, you'll avoid placing darks there. This "darks-first" technique doesn't apply to watercolors.
Ooo, a nice new clean paint pallet box. I have to get out and try a big canvas. This July I began plein air painting on small panels and canvases and I must say this large format looks exciting Kyle. Great painting too. It comes across as fresh and full of energy.
Well working on sunglasses that's rough.. a nice classic scene I like that.. maybe a little bit too busy with too much technique bouncing around. But it takes a lot of energy to do what you did.. wonderful job
so wonderful painting.. i hope so I can paint also on canvas... amzing.. it inspired me to do my own but i cant becuz no materials.. i love it from Philipines.
Absolutely Gorgeous!!! and by the way , what is the music you have playing on this video, I love it too, may I know what it’s called in order to get it?

So lovely to watch you work. Amazing painting. Thankyou. (I'd be worried about dropping something into the river!! That left palette wing looked so close to the edge lol)
Thank you for an inspirational video I have been thinking about live painting with watercolour landscapes / seascapes and this has given me a fresh perspective on my vision. Really appreciated.
I was going to say I can't believe you weren't mobbed by pesky onlookers ... and then there's a guy driving a lawn mower all around you. Nerves of steel!
Hey that's not fair!! Your using real grass clippings on your painting .. Lol lol lol. Dear god. I would of flipped out having all the mower dust flying everywhere.. It cam out beautiful anyway.. Great job. Thank you for sharing the experience..
Wait at the beginning you were wearing regular glasses and then sunglasses? Doesn't that interfere with the color choices? Still looks amazing. I'm just wondering if it felt like a big difference to you?
Video Paused I can hear A Voice in my head saying “Jane Curl Art Stop Playing Around” in other words Get Busy Sister! Ok Now as you are ready to open the wooden box set up with canvas above I will 😊💝proceed to watch your video first time viewing. After 2 foot surgery’s I tend to plein air setting in the hatchback of my car 🚙 weekly!🎨. Pushing ▶️ PLAY It’s like an inner knowing this will be Awesome!
With back & foot injuries & Florida heat, I to have been exploring plein air from my SUV. I saw some ideas & the best ones just prop a drawing/ sketch board, with or without clip, against steering wheel or passenger side dashboard. Another use (sienna) canvas panel holder against steering wheel...
The painting is beautiful. It is not easy to paint a big picture outdoors. Light, wind and insects will affect the painting. I have always insisted on painting outdoors and work hard together!

And clearly he is excellent at painting 'en plien-air' (or in open air). In itself a feat of magnificence!
