Controversial but: in the movies, Pippin lists seven meals of the Hobbits as Breakfast, Second Breakfast, Elevenses, Luncheon, Tea, Supper, and Dinner.
I had to explain this at work after being accused of taking a 5 hour break. 🙄

Tour was led to Vinyamar by 7 seven swans in the First Age. The shield he retrieved had 7 swans in the design. The 7 swans gave Tuor 7 feathers which he put on his helm.

One of THE things I've loved about elves, all these years - the emphasis on stars and starlight. Some of my most magical personal experiences happened beneath the stars, so it means a lot to me for that reason too. Love that the Valacirca is the Plough, for some reason I'd assumed it was the Pleiades instead.
I recently made a physics project in constellations. And when I was making, I really wanted to include the elven constillations, so I included Valacirca (as the Big Dipper), Soronumë (as Aquila), Menelmacar (as Orion) and Wilwarin (as Cassiopeia).
My teacher wondered what they meant, so I (being prepared) told her.
Also, I made a coat of arms for my class, which includes the Valacirca, but as the Crown of Durin.
Also also, I was going to ask You to make a video about constellations, but because I didn't have enough time for the project, I didn't.
Anyways, very good video. I always like when someone is talking about stars, especially those seven stars.
It is also interesting to note that in the Bible the number 7 as well has a meaning of completion, wholeness, fullness, fulfilment. There are also 7 stars, candlesticks etc... I don't know if there is any connection with Tolkein' stars, but interesting to mention.
It certainly makes sense; Tolkein would've been well aware of the Christian significance of the number. And I think that number's also big in other cultural contexts. It's one of those interesting differences we see in nature and make a big deal about, haha, like four leaf clovers.
It was important that even in the darkness of the night... there was light to be seen.
Absolutely enjoy your content Nerd Of The Rings. Thank you. I can not wait for this years content !

Hey man I’m subscribed to you and Into the Wardrobe. And after seeing your video I realized something Lewis and Tolkien really were close friends and the fantasy novels really are a bit similar Lewis has the Star-people in his world and so does Tolkien. True Tolkien had some disagreements about Narnia but that’s true friendship they will sometimes have strains but that just strengthens it. A little quote from Tolkien. “ The unpayable debt that I owe to Lewis was not ‘influence’ as it is ordinarily understood, but sheer encouragement. He was for long my only audience. Only from him did I ever get the idea that my ‘stuff’ could be more than a private hobby”. As always love your channel 👍🏻👍🏻. Bless.
Tolkien just couldn't stand "allegory." 😅
@@Enerdhilyea 🤣. Actually fun fact Narnia isn’t an allegory Lewis said so himself and also a guy with a RUclips channel called Into the Wardrobe. Has a video explaining it. But you are 100% correct Tolkien hated allegory. But yet despite his criticisms their friendship was strong. 💪. Bless.
*Professor Tolkien (after being asked about the number seven in his books filled with symbolism and deep messages):* “Oh, seven just happens to be my favorite number, really.“
I had not thought about the significance of the stars above Middle Earth before, but hearing about the different cultural meanings between the Free Peoples, makes me appreciate the worldbuilding much more.
As usual your information is excellent, so I only want to point out a tiny improvement in terms of pronunciation, which I hope you don't mind: both Cs in Valacirca would have been pronounced the same, as hard Ks, just like the C in Círdan. So for English speakers it becomes va-la-KEER-ka
In Biblical numerology, the number seven is the most holy number, signifying perfection or divinity.
The hobbits seem to like the number seven as well: a hobbit will "according to the legal customs of hobbits, which demand among other things seven signatures of witnesses in red ink" and a term for a hobbit mayor is seven years.
Thank you for your content. After watching video about Rohan history, it rekindled my passion to become a writer.
And 7 houses of the Dwarves. Happy New Year btw, I would like to see the Map of Middle-Earth in the Third Age.
Seven Stars also there were in the banners of Arthedain.
Great video!! Would love to see a video about Durins tower and the endless stair, it is so cool!!
Beautiful Episode ❤
Knowing Tolkien as being an avid Bible reader, the number 7 is used many times over the new and old testament to signify perfection and holiness (in contrast to 6, the "imperfect" number). Surely Tolkien had this in mind when keeping the number's significance in his world!
This was beautiful. While I am a man of science, the beauty of mythos and iconography inspires me. I knew about almost all of these facts, but did not see how the fit together. Thanks for this great integration video.

The number seven is used commonly in the Bible and typically represents perfection, completion, and/or divine intervention.

Yes, but unlike the fiction of the bible, the Lord of the rings is one of the best fictions.

It is clear that Tolkien was both obvious and consistent in his personal favoring of the number 7. Since Christopher is no longer among us, it is less likely, but not impossible to verify this through other family connections. But if a way is found, I'm sure this will prove true.

When Faramir brings forth the Crown from the casket - is that a special box for the crown or the Casket of King Earnil ? Earnur leaves "it on the lap of his father"
The number 7 could be a reference to the Bible since the number 7 is also used many times in the Bible
I wonder if the 7 kings from across the sea might also be inspired by 7 kingdoms of Anglo Saxon England. The kings originally being from overseas.
"And he had in his right hand SEVEN STARS: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength."
"The Pleaides may be a beautiful star cluster today, but ancient peoples all around the world were fearful of the Pleiades, especially in November. In this clip, Randall looks at the various myths and legends regarding the Pleiades and their apparent link to world-wide devastation.
Our planet travels through the Taurid meteor stream twice per year (late June and late October / early November) The radiant point of the Taurids is located near the Pleaides. In other words, the meteors appear to emanate out of the Pleiades.
The Taurid meteor stream is actually the remnants of Comet Encke, which entered our solar system roughly 30,000 years ago. Encke was massive, and as it entered the inner solar system it began to fragment. These fragments created a "donut" of debris. As our planet flies through this debris twice per year, we see a meteor shower.
If we put all these pieces together, the ancient stories of the Pleiades begin to make sense. Our ancestors saw meteors falling to earth in late October, all appearing to come from the Pleiades. Some of these impacts were quite large, causing widespread wildfires and devastation. It's possible the worst event happened roughly 12,800 years ago, marking the beginning of the Younger Dryas...
After surviving the horrific trauma of the Younger Dryas, our ancestors started a few traditions to preserve the memory of those who died. We still see remnants of these traditions in our modern Halloween and All Souls Day."
Yes!!! Love starry themes in mythology and religion and your voice and the music you use are so relaxing. The art with the music gives an ethereal feel.
On another nerdy note and apologies if it's a bit off topic but I also can't stop being reminded of Elbereth when I hear the "Hail, Queen of Heaven, the Ocean Star" hymn. The first bit goes:
"Hail, Queen of heav'n, the ocean Star:
Guide of the wand'rer here below,
Toss'd on life's surge we claim thy care;
Save us from peril and from woe.
Mother of Christ, Star of the Sea,
Pray for the wand'rer, pray for me."
The whole hymn carries on with that theme and when I looked it up on Wikipedia, there was even a section titled 'Tolkien', so it's likely he was inspired by that.
Given Tolkien's intense experience with what he called his "Atlantis haunting" I have to believe he must have acquainted himself with various works on the subject. In Eleanor Merry's "The Flaming Door: The Mission of the Celtic Folk-Soul", first published in 1936, she gathers together various sources and legends on the matter and establishes an important connection that spans between all of them - the constellation of the Big Dipper and its symbolism of seven. This includes various sources we otherwise know he was interested in, including Arthurian legend and Welsh and Irish mythology, and also pulls in classical works like the Mysteries of Saturn and ancient material like the Epic of Gilgamesh. The image emerges of a Land Beyond the West, where the secrets of immortality abide. She then goes on to further directly tie this symbolism to the recurring figure of the Queen of Heaven, whom she (and Tolkien almost certainly) identified with Mary, whom he represented in his stories variously but including with the character of Varda.
Matt, when are you going to do your spoiler review of War of the Rohirrim? I'm really looking forward to it.

Old man (Withking)
Gandalf the fool (Saruman)

When are you reviewing HOME box set 4 and the collected poems of JRR Tolkien???!!!!
The importance of the number 7 in Tolkien’s works may also have something to do with his faith, because 7 is seen as a number of perfection and is referenced often in the Bible.
will there ever be a compliation of these great videos? like maybe a dvd with custom art, or a downloadable complilation (without ads).. i would definetely buy it!
The number 7 is a Holy number in Christianity.
For example, in the First book of the old testimony of the Bible called Genesis. God created the Earth and our universe in 6 days and he rested on the 7th day.
Then in the new testimony Christ said, " forgive 7 × 7 times."
I'm sure there are others but I don't remember off the top of my head at the moment.
In any case good video.
The seven stars has been used in the Dragon Ball media. 7 dragon balls each with different number of stars (1-7). It's also been used In Digimon Frontier with a mega level angel Digimon named Seraphimon whose signature attack is called, "Stike of the Seven Stars".
Apart from a great video, I learned today that what we call “the Great Bear” as a constellation apparently other countries call “the Big Dipper” 🧐
The star pattern has many names in different cultures around the world. What is interesting is how many, widely distant, cultures associated the stars of Ursa Major with a bear. The name "Big Dipper" is primarily used in the United States and Canada, and I believe, in China as well.
"7" is the number of perfection as they say. 🤔

What always confused me was why the big dipper was used when Corona Borealis also has an asterism of 7 stars and is literally "northern crown", it just seemed more appropriate.
Just guessing, but the Big Dipper is more well-known & more prominent in the sky
@@robertepler189 It is possible.
Though I will have expected the light pollution 70 years ago to not be nearly as bad as it is today. If you are able to get out to a rural (or better) sky, there are so many stars it is actually difficult to pick out the major asterisms, they no longer dominate the sky like they do in modern suburb skies.

I'm a bit sceptical that Sauron suspected the role of the One Ring in the overthrow of Saruman. Surely he would have been aware of its power if, say, Aragon had used it at Isengard?
I have to nit pick here. But the letter c is always pronounced like the letter k in Quenya. It should sound like Valakirca.

Hey nerd of the rings have you though of deep diving into the lore of the bible? If you love tolkiens work i think you would be blown away by the depth of scripture and the lore that comes from it.
From giants, sons of god and the stories behind the different nations there is quite the tale going on.
New headcanon: the blue wizards are practitioners of Hokuto Shinken, trained by Orome.
7 lives of Durin?
There's also the 7 stars of the Hisperides, the 7 sisters given a place in the heavens to escape Orion.
7 beacons
I have a what-if question of sorts. Why didn’t Sauron ever consider kidnapping a wizard to forcibly make a new One Ring. The blue wizards, the brown wizard, probably wouldn’t have made as strong a ring, no. But Sauroman might have been willing. Sauron had the know how. He lost the darn ring for several thousand years, surely the idea of “what if I just made a new one,” with another’s essence, and then took it by force, wouldn’t have been ridiculous.
Is there any significance attached to 3 and 9 for the number of rings for Elves & Men?
I read that Tolkien was annoyed by what Disney did with the 7 dwarfs so I wonder if that's why there were 7 fathers of the Dwarves (and so 7 lords).
The three elemental rings were successors to the three silmarils that ended up in the fire, air and water.
When Cirdan gave Narya (fire) to Gandalf, he said "with it you may rekindle hearts in a world that grows chill"
Nenya (water) was about preservation and concealing from evil I believe? In Norse mythology, I believe water is associated with being a source of life, understanding and Wisdom, which are associated with Galadriel.
I wonder if they represent three virtues. The silmarils all contained the hallowed light, which Tolkien might say were a "refracted light", splintered from a single white and so to me, it makes sense that they would also represent virtues.
Whats the name/artist of the background song in the beginning of the video?
