Hi Ross: I have being self-learning watercolor painting for half a year and watched a lot of videos. Your video is amazing! I love it very much! The details, the techniques, the explanation. Thanks you so much for making them for us! Aqua
Thank you so much for sharing your techniques! I like the way you teach, especially you point out what color to use for every steps. The clear explanation is extremely helpful for beginners.
This was awsome! I'm working on a white lotus with my new water soluble oils and am trying to paint my flower from a photo with a pink lotus. Your video helped me get a lot more relaxed about colors I can use to create the various tones and shadows in my petals. I love the way your lotus turned out and am inspired to try water colors sometimes. Thanks for sharing this with us.
These small dimension watercolors are a great way to practice technique without the daunting task of a huge painting. You are a wonderful instructor! Thank you :)
Your work is beautiful and I know a Brooklyn accent when I hear one (Dad's from Brooklyn and went to Pratt back in the 50's!) Lotus flowers ARE very special and dear to me as well. I've been photographing them but more recently on too many outings with my camera the Lotus have not always "behaved" for me and aren't always open... so I decided i need to "illustrate" them in a different way, plus the watercolor allows for a whole different feel. The Lotus is a rather incredible flower with many symbolic meanings among the Hindu and Buddist. The Hindu even believe the sun was born from the Lotus flower. Thank you Ross for this wonderful video - it will help me start working in watercolors! p.s. I love all the detail you provide. I should probably get a mechanical pencil rather than use a regular graphite pencil...
Hi Eric, When I originally began posting videos I intended to maintain a balance between jewelry and watercolor painting, and I plan on posting watercolor videos more frequently during this year. Glad you like my watercolor videos! Thanks for watching!
This is stunning! you are an awesome teacher! ty for explaining the simple things as you create-( I'm a complete beginner) not only was I mesmerized by your work, but I learned so much ! I subscribed- excited to watch more! Jesus bless you!
Hey there, Ross! Don't you just love it when a solution for a problem just magically presents itself at just the right time? That's what happened when I found this video yesterday. My problem is this: I'm just starting to learn how to paint with watercolors and I quickly realized the most important ingredient (in my humble opinion) is the quality of the paper. The difference between Arches compared to Strathmore, for example, is night and day!!! I'm sure I'm not telling you anything you don't know, lol! But, I don't have much money and it was almost enough to make me throw in the towel if I had to use anything but Arches to make my mistakes on. But, here's the solution... I can just do tiny little paintings while I'm learning. I can paint six tiny paintings on just one sheet of Arches! I don't know why it didn't occur to me until I saw your video, but I'm so happy to realize it now. I did this painting of the waterlily yesterday and will likely do it again today before I move on to your other tutorials on tiny paintings. Thanks very much for sharing your talent.
Thanks for sharing this, Ross. Miniature painting is so much fun a project. I'm enjoying it, as well as my kids are. Your video is very helpful. Cheers.
I've been following you from the beginning with your watercolor paper jewellery. You're such a good teacher and so organized and meticulous in your work. Thank you for the suggestion of doing little miniature paintings. I think I will try that.
Hi Ross, I always enjoy watching you paint. I love all of the tips you give us. I think you should move to the Philadelphia area!!! Thanks again for sharing your amazing talents.
Love your work and the ACEO size is perfect for beginners. I am currently working on a 30 day painting challenge right now painting all flowers in this size! :)
Hello, I followed you along in this video and created my first waterlily!!!!!!!! This instructional video was very helpful. Could you please do more videos like this one in watercolor? I like how your instructions and your attention to detail. Thank you.
Hi Ross, I'm so glad I found your videos. You have really helped me a lot with the information you share,as I am a beginner. Thank you Maria Pellegrino ( from Australia)
realisticart I' ve just found your videos and like them very much. Although I'm a longtime watercolor painter I know we can always learn more. I never will know it all , thats how it is with this medium. your painting techniques are explained to the 'nth degree. My only problem with it is using such heavy paper for such tiny paintings. The flowers are so delicate my thinking is maybe a hot pressed paper. Thank you so much for sharing your k owledge.
Did you do a series on painting miniatures here on RUclips? I love your instructions and paintings! You sound just like my brother-in-law from Ithaca, NY! 😁
wow that is impressive to paint on such a small canvas. those must be small sized brushes! And that must be a really good pen to write your name on. Awesome! :)
Hi Kathe, Miniature paintings have been popular genera for centuries, and I make small paintings in a range of sizes. The reason for this exact size (2.5 x 3.5) is that it puts them in the category of Artist Trading Cards. In addition to that I also create extended series of cards that are all based on the same original drawing. They would not be considered “editions “because that implies “exact printed replications.” Since each one is an original, hand painted watercolor, I consider them to be “variations on a theme,” and sometimes offer that as ACEO cards. ACEO = Art Cards, Editions and Originals
Roberta Macedo ---Those are kneaded erasers. In my opinion, Design is the best brand, but Prismacolor also makes them. Most (if not all) art supply retailers should have them in stock.
After I lay in the drawing, I clean up the pencil line with a kneaded eraser. That's the rubber that you see me working with before I start to paint. Thanks for watching!

Hi Janet, I'm very glad that my video tutorial is helpful! Ross
If you mix the colors that you have already used in the paintings, it will work better than the tube black or grey with the paintings. But very nice.

Hi Michelle, Glad that my technique is helpful! Thanks for watching! Ross
Enjoyed this as I do with all your painting videos. Question: what is a good use for a painting of this size?
Hi Kathe,
Miniature paintings have been popular genera for centuries, and I make small paintings in a range of sizes. The reason for this exact size (2.5 x 3.5) is that it puts them in the category of Artist Trading Cards. In addition to that I also create extended series of cards that are all based on the same original drawing. Hey, it's beautiful!
What is the name of the rubber you use on the video start?
Roberta Macedo ---Those are kneaded erasers. In my opinion, Design is the best brand, but Prismacolor also makes them. Most (if not all) art supply retailers should have them in stock.
After I lay in the drawing, I clean up the pencil line with a kneaded eraser. That's the rubber that you see me working with before I start to paint. Thanks for watching!
