      [SPOILER ALERT] You got about a year or so on me. Your comment got me thinking. This movie has likely also influenced my interest in bushcraft (our family has been hikers & campers for 4 generations now). I think the influential idea was that anyone, even as young as Shawn, could survive out in the bush with the correct know how. Patrick Foley fast-tracked Shawn's related education by 'teaching a man to fish' rather than 'giving a man a fish' (so to speak) even though it seemed harsh of Patrick to not 'give' Shawn much than the hard lessons that ultimately saved Shawn's life.

    THE GOLDEN BOY S penultimate SWAN SONG FILM. A real life semi-allegorical life sitrep full of existential premonitions, ghosts of the past, lukewarm nostalgia & insinuated kind acceptance etc before, supposedly, getting killed by his night table in Santa Monica soon after. Holden s life path was truly strong and profound. Every one of his major films was a message of human dignity with deeply-carved moral aptitudes, not platitudes. "Simple Human Decency" was his key phrase in NETWORK when educating the upstart 70s yuppie, Faye Dunaway, a product of the "TV-generation". His other late-late works such as the 4gettable WHEN TIME RAN OUT and OMEN 2 were basically cover stories to conceal his rugged facade he successfully kept up despite serious alcoholism. Even the poetic violence in THE WILD BUNCH had its merits in moral terms : the outcome was no Wild Hunch, but a protest toward the carnage in Nam. Only his last film SOB (1981) by Blake Edw was ill-advisedly mistitled: Bill was the opposite. The film herein is quite rare, even 4 myself this is 1st viewing. "They don t make actors like he was any longer" -cliche suits fine as a cadenza. 🇫🇮

    My family had this on the old videotape. I remember thinking of Shawn's father in this cut as just a very careless man, which is what led to both him and his wife's demise. And seeing the EU cut for the first time, I was surprised to see Shawn's parents get more screen time, namely the father. In that cut, I think he is shown as someone trying to be calm and friendly, but deep down, he is actually very arrogant and hot-headed, thinking that he is always right, which again leads to his death.

    • @BautistaVids
      @BautistaVids  7 месяцев назад +1

      [SPOILER ALERT] I appreciate your comment. One thing I observed with the EU version was that the marriage was on rockier ground than the US version showed. Both the husband and wife seem to be dealing with some differences that relate to the tension. While I appreciate watching the EU version, I really did enjoy the US version and the idea that both parents had a more Cleaver/Brady family relationship. I think that is what the producers of the US version had in mind, but they failed at completely hiding that tension, particularly relating to the camper scene. For years that slightly interrupted flow of love and harmony in that US camper scene bothered (didn't make sense) me, like a splinter in my mind that was finally removed after watching the EU version.

      @@BautistaVids I like this version better as well. I feel that the EU cut is more melancholic, while this one is more bittersweet. The music in this version strikes me as living your life to the fullest. It can be sad sometimes, and will come to an end eventually, but life can still be fulfilling and content.

    You noted in your description that it was made for TV. Not sure that is true. I suspect it just got limited or no distribution into theaters. It was finally released on HBO here in the US the year after it was made, which was the common release gap for films that played in theaters at that time for a film to go from theater to HBO and home video in the 80's. In the case of the Earthling. not even sure it got a VHS release at that time.

      [Spoiler Alert] - I have the EU version as well, but I prefer the US version. As I mentioned in the description, the EU version will, to an extent, fill in some gaps. At the same time, the alterations and cuts were done to lighten the mood a bit (they disguised/removed the tension between Shawn's parents for instance). So, the US version is intended to be a different presentation than the EU version. IMHO, the gaps filled only relate to some of the scenes themselves- not so much about the presented story (unless there's an original book that reveals an original author's intent).

    I didn't like the ending of The Earthling, it's only showing that poor orphan Shawn had to travel alone back to civilisation even with a unknown fate after that, I hope Shawn least later found someone who would help and/or adopt him, find and be taken care of an adult relative who least had to know what happened to his parents, or least be taken in to orphanage after if he got back to civilization.

      No doubt the mother and father also represented Adam and Eve and their crash represented their fall from paradise. Kabbalists think they have the tree of life figured out through their own rebirth ritual but only Jesus Christ saves.

      Note also how the little boy shouts 'I am God'? This is a very occultic film if you notice all the references. Hollywood always codes their films like this. They always reference the Bible, their own Kabbalist/ Gnostic beliefs and they always reference Jesus. Notice the friend he leaves behind is called 'Christian'? This film is loaded with references. These films aren't entertainment but Gnostic propaganda.
