Smash up is such a fun game to play. Each expansion brings something new to the table. I especially like how they add little secrets to some of the factions. An example being that all the Giant ants action card names are based on Queen songs.
Also the fact that there’s a card in the Rock Star faction based on Rick Astley, so when you draw cards from your deck, you have a chance of literally Rick Rolling yourself :y
@@MrSkerpentine solo breaking a base from nowhere because you decided to play "Rick Roll"is do funny. It sells me on Rockstar. Also, Rockstar Bear cavalry is a pretty fun combo. It's not the craziest one, but it's fun and that's what's important
If you want to get into Smash Up I suggest your first expansion should be It's Your Fault. It has Sharks, Mythic Greeks, Dragons and Superheroes (plus a surprise 5th faction) and they're all pretty good quality.
As someone who owns every single smash up expansion I am so glad you're bringing attention to it. It's a really fun card game with a very reasonable price point, once someone has and brings all the expansions, that means every person in the gathering has all the cards, there is no "I got lucky and pulled a $50+ card". There's only, "I bought an expansion with some amazing factions (half decks) in them that go well with some other factions in another expansion. As a broke university student I truly wish this game got more attention because it's so well balanced price wise and game play wise. Thank you for covering this.
Oh hey, I love Smash Up. It's really fun when you can find factions that synergize well with each other, but even the general conceit of "pick 2; go nuts" is pretty fundamentally appealing, and means that one won't necessarily get bored of this game for some time. Basically the perfect game to crack open for when you don't know which game you want to crack open. Having a consistent play group to break this out with is also ideal, as some factions are very clearly over-tuned on their own, so being able to have some house bans in play can definitely help everyone have a good time. This goes without saying but, the more factions you have to choose from, the merrier, so I do highly recommend picking up the base game on top of whatever special interest expansion that might catch your eye, just for that many more factions to combine those special interests with. Bear Cavalry with Garden Gnomes? Maybe Vampires with Zombies? Why not, knock yourself out!
I know it’s a little late, but that card that Jay was talking about, that stops a base from scoring for one round, is in the Time Travelers deck, not Cyborg Apes.
I feel like the base game needs the Awesome 3000 expansion to feel balanced across the decks, and I found the Monster expansion's power tokens made the game too cluttered, but it's a fun game overall for sure.
I love Pretty Pretty! It's my favorite out of the 4 expansions shown. I don't find it to be parody, except in the avoiding copyright sense (eg. Princess Apricot instead of Princess Peach) which I think is cute. Each faction has it's own favorite mechanic - Princesses have fewer, but powerful minions, Cats take control and destroy their own, Mythic Horses are powered up when they are together, Fairies are a support deck with lots of options because they are mercurial. The Fairies are little weaker, but the the other 3 factions are 10/10 in my book. I don't find the expansion to be insincere at all!
Steampunks are one of my favorite factions. Their focus on base actions combined with ridiculously strong actions like Rotary Slug Thrower and Accromotive make them super fun to play. I also really like Awesome Level 9000 in general because it comes with 4 totally different factions, as opposed to the others where they all kind of have the same theme
@@thymicere3911 it’s the 9th best selling switch game and it’s getting another title in 2022 it’s perfectly acceptable to be playing splatoon right about now
I ended up selling all my SmashUp stuff... I like it conceptually, I desired more and more expansions to add endless variety to the game. The downside is, when you play with new players, the more expansions you have the more rules you have to explain. Someone's playing with the Lovecraft set? Great, now you get to explain madness cards. Smashup it self doesn't FEEL like a hardcore game, yet the rules explanation gets so long that you feel like you're explaining a much harder game.
I've played with the sci-fi expansion and have Loved both the cyborg apes and spies! We did have to implement a house rule though that you can't play with both the zombies and the shapeshifters in the same game; if someone chooses one, the other is put aside. The shapeshifters just become markedly OP when they can copy zombie abilities and power levels, to the point that every time they were both around the shapeshifters player won easily.
As someone with way too much experience with the game, you REALLY do not know how powerful decks can be if you think Zombies and Shapeshifters are overpowered together. I own every single expansion and can tell you right now, if you think they're too OP, you're not even in sight of the iceberg for how powerful decks can be.

I like the idea of the game, but playing it with over 3-4 people is just an exercise in frustration. Due to how the bases are balanced, any one particular base can go from zero to captured in a few folks' turns, meaning that you cannot really be strategic. You just fire off the best thing you have at a base that looks like it might be capped and hope that nobody will be able to fire a bigger thing (which, chances are, they will).
I have every single expansion and no one cool enough to play with me... to be fair, I have 2 mtg playgroups that get together multiple times per week where I could probably get some players.
As a non board game player, i have a question for the pros here, why do you play board games? A person plays video games because of loot or level ups or fun in the action like in fps or street fighter like games, but what does a person look upto when playing board games? Is it the fact that you can have a good time with friends or just the rules make you feel good?
@@taimoortariq8738 Well for me board games are fun. That fun comes from: 1) The fact that 99.9% of board games are played with other people. This means that there’s usually a lot of social talk during the game and casual interactions with people. 2) The board game itself. I love strategy and a lot of traditional board games are badly designed. New age board games have cool themes, allow you to make interesting strategic decisions etc. There are lots of genres just like video games. 3) The physical aspect of moving pieces, playing cards etc just can’t be beaten. It also means that board games are more widely accessible as they don’t require good “mechanics” - there are not thumbsticks or keys to press. Also you don’t have to buy a console for someone to play their game with you. I’ve been playing modern board games for the past 8 years and have a collection of over 100. I still play video games but I have never made friends online so I’ve never valued the multiplayer experience other than with friends.
