For peace talks to begin the world needs to see a Russia that is able to be honest with itself at least (look at a Russian WW2 memorial).

As an outsider looking in my I add that to be able to afford to increase defense spending Britain needs to go beyond austerity and tax cuts for the rich and actually grow the economy. The reality of smaller defense budget due to Brexit sinks in.
Brexit decreased tax revenues by 40 billion, we have at least 570 billion offshore! It's industrial scale tax evasion we all need to tackle

The Ukraine war was caused by nato wishing to expand nato eastwards which was a catastrophic geopolitical strategic mistake. Nato borders were secure before that but by wishing to increase the size of nato and poking the Russians into invading Ukraine, nato has caused a war and destabilised Europe. That was the plan all along because poking the Russian bear is great for defence spending and it worked because here you are wanting us to spend more on defence. We should have agreed that Ukraine should be a neutral state. That would have prevented the invasion, the energy crisis, the cost of living crisis and the rise in interest rates which has hit so many millions of people. I would also have prevented Russia becoming such a close ally of China which is clearly against our geopolitial interests
