I have seen those before and I just assumed you had to glue them on. Thanks for the video! I will definitely check these out. My minis have been a bit drab in the past and I have been trying to brighten them up a bit.
I only use transparent bases to be more immersive on the different terrains. You can buy ones or do it yourself.Hey may be a next episode to show how to cut round square and rectangle bases ?
Is that tent over your left shoulder made of xps foam or dm Scotty’s tp and glue technique? Am I the only one tripping off all the awesome stuff on the shelves? The mini paint jobs look so amazing. I remember when you made the paper vs plastic mini vid. Then you scored that big box of minis. I’m really looking forward to seeing what happens when you decide to tackle an airbrush! Your video was a great pick me up. Needed that after a crazy week.
I love finished terrain bases but I hate having bases of one kind on another terrain. With that said what I do is drill holes big enough for thumb tack shafts or similar in the feet or similar appendages and make bases of different terrain types that I can place the minis on that way it doesn't detract from the mood of the game. Yes I know that means a lot of extra bases and whatnot but they can also be used as scatter if need be when there's no mini on them.
glad to hear you're putting more into your figures. I really think you would like the game Frostgrave. Warband skirmish wargame with a nice amount of RPG. The handful of miniatures you control are all individual characters with their own attributes and you build them up with experience. Look into if you ever get a chance, or if you haven't already.
Sure, the Canadian Amazon has a smaller selection of goods, but you guys do have your couriers use transdimensional warping to deliver everything. At least according to Scott Pilgrim. That’s about the extent of my knowledge on the mysterious north.
In the event that no one has posted this before me, it's not so hard to craft your own grass tufts. This is contradictory to the theme of this video, but... You do need a static grass applicator (or a converted electric fly swatter on the cheap - look it up). Check out Luke Towan's videos on RUclips. Also, model railroad enthusiasts have pioneered a lot of what tabletop terrain folks are seeking solutions for.
Yea, one day I may build a grass applicator, but not this day.....these were just too clean and easy. But I'd like to be able to make my own unique versions.
Clear circle base with the outer edge painted black makes the miniatures appear as they are highlighted from a top down perspective. (Similar to RTS games)
Fun fact: Over 10 Years ago, I got a bag of static grass. I thought the name "static grass" was just some flavour naming thing, like gamesworkshop do with their paints: "Goblin green" "Mithril silver" etc. So when I used the grass, it looked like shit compared to pictures of other people using it on their minis. I felt ripped off and never bought static grass again. Only a few weeks ago, I stumbled upon a tutorial that used a electric applicator, and I have never felt this dumb ever.
im binge watching the channel. love it so far. i did have one question / video idea. are you able to see the products the people buy with your amazon affiliate link? are they buying craft stuff you havent covered yet? might give you some insight on what to make videos on.
When I finish a mini I’ll usually post it to the tabletop crafters guild Facebook group. I collect s variety of types, reaper bones and metal, wizkids, GW, old pewter.
Personally, I don't like doing much with my mini bases because to me, it constrains it to a single environment to a degree. If you put a mini standing on a bunch of grass in an inn, in my opinion, that looks off and I'd rather have a blank base when the mini is going to be used for game play. Although, I would love to use these for environment peices and stuff.
As a Wargammer RPG person you don't need a static grass applicator to use static grass on figure bases. Put down your PVA (I do it straight from the bottle of Elmers School Glue) apply a clump of static grass, let it sit for 90 seconds dump off excess, turn the figure upside down, thump or flick the very bottom of the base, while upside down blow off extra, and voila standing static grass.
Quite reasonable price for tuffs! Do you recommend using them also for regular terrain ?( not super cool dioramas, just for some scatter rocks and trees)
I have used something similar to this (but not as cool) on a big swamp game board I did, along with BMC’s apoxy method and it came out really nice. Now my players stumble through a swamp every other week lol!!! I’d say, yes! Use it for terrain too.
They work great for terrain, but personally I tend to build terrain and pieces without a base. I don't like when items are surrounded by a grassy base, and prefer them to be "free standing" if possible. That being said I would absolutely use these on terrain bases when I have them.
I encourage the use of store bought flock and tufts like this. I say again, like i did before - "I want to make stuff, not make the stuff to make stuff."
Alec Ward cool! I like to get higher quality metal/plastic minis for my PCs. I'll go to reaper bones for more encounter/npc types. Warhammer has great character minis, but they are expensive, but worth it. Love your vids
Yea my collection is a mix of companies and materials. The majority though, and most of what I've added myself are reaper bones. I've also painted some Wizkids ones. I can say painting the metal ones is far more enjoyable and yields much better results. But can't beat the bones/wizkids prices.
Black Magic Craft I really like reaper for table top play. They resist damage so well and drops or knocks are not an issue. What bases do you use? Any preferences?
Black Magic Craft mostly i asked because i love your format of videos and style of video making plus it seems fun to see how you paint! I understand 100% though!
I tend to just leave my bases black if they're monsters. For my players I'll add things to their bases because they're on the table all the time and they're more important. The things I add are made from green stuff (not amazingly sculpted I might add) or I buy the secret weapon miniatures bases($ in Canada). I might start basing the creatures in their native terrain a la pathfinder bestiary though, I'm just not sure how it would look while on the map during play. I agree integrated bases are pretty ugly, I wish reaper would supply them if desired but leave the mini off of the base.
You can actually make a whole batches of these on a sheet of wax paper/baking paper really REALLY cheaply and make them as ornate or simplistic as you like. (Also you can make a static wand too) *ideas for future videos* COUGH COUGH 0:)
One day I might tackle the home built static applicator....but not sure, I don't really like the idea of dealing with the mess of static grass. Every time I see video of people making these tufts it seems really annoying to clean up after :D
New terrain crafter long time mini painter... I actually hate based minis. The visual conflict if a mini with an grass base on dungeon tiles or vice versa drives me insane. Don’t get me wrong I like how they can look. I just feel like you loose a large amount of versatility from your mini.
I get that....but it doesn't bother me. Personally I prefer a nice scenic base that might be wrong for the moment than a black circle. I think if it bothered me I'd opt for a clear base instead.
SAME! Based minis are fun to do but, for me, my group of friends know it's a pet peeve of mine when they're wandering the bowels of a dungeon and the elf's base has a friggin' fern popping out of it and like to "torture" me with that. So, when they wanted to play another game after a long hiatus I got around that by using clear bases made out of 1" clear adhesive bumpers for glass shelves and picture frames. Took some adhesive remover to the sticky side, popped the mini on the other, and now my tile texture shows through!
Thanks for the tip about WWS, they're also in South Wales, I didn't think we manufactured anything at all any more! I'm delighted 😀
Everyone look around. Black magic dropped his hat somewhere.
I have seen those before and I just assumed you had to glue them on. Thanks for the video! I will definitely check these out. My minis have been a bit drab in the past and I have been trying to brighten them up a bit.
It depends on where you get them from, this brand is self adhesive but many aren’t.
Awesome find/recommendation! I can't wait to get started on painting all the minis I have.
I love to buy these for my mini's glad you like em as well. Now when I need more I can use your amazon link!
I’ve used those tufts for years. So great!
With how great your terrain is, I would have never thought you are new to mini painting!
Yea, I went the reverse of most people and starting building terrain before painting minis. For a long time I used paper minis.
No hat! Damn 2018 is already off to a wild start!
Grass tufts now available in Australia since Amazon launched locally last month.
Great video! Very informative and honest, and I enjoyed watching it. Definitely gonna pick up some of these tufts soon.
Love that your getting into Mini Painting! Keep the videos coming brother!
Thanks, I'm really enjoying it.
Have you tried GW's static grass? You get a bunch of sizes in one box from tiny to large and they stick extremely well.
I only use transparent bases to be more immersive on the different terrains. You can buy ones or do it yourself.Hey may be a next episode to show how to cut round square and rectangle bases ?

The tent is straight up DM Scotty orc tent style.
I love finished terrain bases but I hate having bases of one kind on another terrain. I figured out you can just rub a balloon or thin resistance band on your head and hover it over the grass and it comes out pretty good.
Another fantastic video and recommendation, Jeremy! Thanks!

This game sounds interesting
Ive been interested in trying Frostgrave for a while but have never had the time to make it happen.
They look great on your miniatures!
I know!
I use these on everything! I tried to make my own but they didn't have the height (even using tall static grass) they seemed to just flop over.
Sure, the Canadian Amazon has a smaller selection of goods, but you guys do have your couriers use transdimensional warping to deliver everything. At least according to Scott Pilgrim. That’s about the extent of my knowledge on the mysterious north.
Literally everything is better here other than our reduced amazon shopping. :P
Luke Towan has a great tutorial on how to make static grass applicator for very cheap.
i was just thinking today of how fitting it would be if I hand built a shed to use as a workshop to build tiny... foam... sheds... and thus is life XD

Not sure which brand I use but I love the stuff
Yeahhh they're awesome, can grab them on eBay too!
Clear circle base with the outer edge painted black makes the miniatures appear as they are highlighted from a top down perspective. (Similar to RTS games)
Yea, I don't mind clear bases in game, they just aren't as fun to do.
Fun fact: Over 10 Years ago, I got a bag of static grass. That's hilarious.

HATLESS! The world is topsy-turvy! (Great vid)
I'd like to see your minis up close. Do you have them posted anywhere? And what brands do you paint? Bones,Metal ect....
When I finish a mini I’ll usually post it to the tabletop crafters guild Facebook group. I collect s variety of types, reaper bones and metal, wizkids, GW, old pewter.
You can check out my Facebook Group facebook.com/groups/BonesII/ If you want to post them here or see what others are up to!
Do you apply these to bases before or after clearcoating your minis?
I do it before. It doesn’t affect the look of the grass tufts and it makes them harder and locks in any loose fibres.
Try the Vallejo Ground Texture

I tried and I tried, and never managed to get results as good as the premade tufts.
can you do a video on making tents? the one sitting on your shelf look sweat AF!
That bad boy is made with DM Scotty's instruction: ruclips.net/video/8RJ8Jqu1Y7s/видео.html
good to know! thanks for sharing

That's a good motto, and one I tend to agree with.
Nice review. Thx
Btw. Could you recommand anything for crafting trees or where to buy them.
gReeZz
I just buy woodland scenics trees
Really nice paint jobs.
You buy Reaper Bones minis or metal?
David O They are a mix, most were gifted by a fan. He has a video of them in more detail on the channel.
Alec Ward cool! I like to get higher quality metal/plastic minis for my PCs. I'll go to reaper bones for more encounter/npc types.

Good stuff! Thanks!
Can you do a mini painting tutorial pleeeassee
There are a lot of mini painters far more experienced than me already making excellent youtube tutorials.
Black Magic Craft mostly i asked because i love your format of videos and style of video making plus it seems fun to see how you paint! I understand 100% though!
I might actually do it one day. But only if I end up being able to dedicate more time to videos.
Black Magic Craft hell yeah! Would be awesome to see man :) happy crafting!

Yea, sculpting bases out of greenstuff is another thing I've really enjoyed doing lately.
Several diy static grass applicators videos out there
Here is but one

That's why I'll buy more than one mini and do different terrain bases. I swap them out in game when the terrain changes.
I love You!
