Just some of my own personal experiences with creativity. Feel free to add to the conversation in the comments! Thanks for watching!
Diets been a BIG one , I kept telling myself the “body will come back when I’m ready” like it would be this magic spell when things slow down, and 3 years later it totally has not done that :/ , great video !
Evan thank you for this video! I appreciate it, i needed this man.
Man you SMASHED IT with this one 👍🏻 so many of your tips I can relate to. I’ve had 60 years of life experience & for the past 3 years been a RUclipsr. You hit the nail on the head for me and almost brought a tear to my eye on point number seven “Over-Analysing” 12:00 🥺 I am so guilty of this one it’s been my number one excuse not to get on with creating. Thanks for making this video man, it takes sometimes hearing it from someone else for the “penny to drop”. Keep up these super cool videos young man. Cheers from Western Australia 🇦🇺 👍🏻
consuming vs creating is a huge problem. Proud of you Evan keep up the solid work!
I have felt super uncreative lately and I've been thinking about how I can get it back, so this video game at a perfect time!
I've identified alcohol as a big issue as far as this goes for me. I drink pretty heavy at least once a weekend. I like to go out partying and clubbing with my friends, but it's hit me recently that this has a hugely detrimental effect on my creativity (amongst other things). Especially when you add on things that usually come with it, like not getting enough sleep - it leaves my mind feeling foggy for days after and the creativity is just not there.
Definitely time to start doing away with these bad habits.
I'm so happy that there's at least someone who talks about the significant stuff, funny how everytime i feel some struggle and try to get some insights you have a video for "real world solutions". I'm mad thankful for what you do Evan, not only the photo inspiration but also the authenticy in the other things you create content about. I hope to one day being able to give back to what you give out to the community and with the little things help out so many people like me the starting photographer from the other side of the globe!
for me it's working out! hitting the gym will boost your energy levels + give you the physical strength to carry all your gear and crush it on the shoot. the worst is when you're out of shape, huffing and puffing before you even begin shooting. it sucks all creative energy out of me as I'll just be trying to catch up the whole time. keeping the body disciplined and the mind follows (and vice versa)
great video Evan! thanks for sharing
I usually don't really comment, but I love watching your videos, and they are a source of inspiration for me.
This time I finally decided to break this lurking tradition because this video reaally resonated with me!
Almost all the points you summed up are so spot on for me that it's borderline scary.
Thanks for putting into words the feeling I've had about this for a long time!
Great advice. I’ve found that adding a fake commute can help me get into the right head space to be creative, as well. It takes me four minutes to drive from home to my studio but if I drive across town to the far coffee shop and end up taking 30 minutes from home to studio I’ve noticed that I spend less time getting myself up and running once I arrive- I guess I work out all the little mental roadblocks during the “commute” and have a bit more of a confident plan upon arrival.
I think a lot of people forget the importance of self care like you mentioned. I have made meditation a priority everyday and just that simple practice has really improved my mental clarity which in turn leads me to make better photos. Great video!!
Great video! Saved it to keep coming back to it during my blue periods.
I can relate so much to the alcohol part of the video. Bunch of times I’ve been planning to do whatever creative stuff and then have a few beers with the dinner and feel to lazy afterwards. Also if drinking a few in the evening, I can feel the creativity being a lot lower the next day so I’ve come to the conclusion to stay away from that if I actually want to get stuff done. Great video Evan! 🙏
Great video Evan, and I agree with all of the points listed. Two things I would add are A) make sure you do something creatively for yourself so you still keep that passion alive. B) Make sure you don't sit in the comfort zone. I'm always guilty of just taking more similar shots when I get a good composition, or reverting to type with portraits and locations. I think you've mentioned these yourself in other videos too. Thank you for once again being the voice of insight and reason!
So glad I bumped into this video. You're speaking facts!
As a graphic designer/ illustrator I have found a lot of your insight to apply to my field as well. Great stuff mate, subbed!
Evan, so glad you realized how these habits can be detrimental to your creativity. Nice vid!
Great video man! Loved the tips
Thank you Evan , I’m working on my “branding”. I really appreciate your realistic and positive vibe. After watching you for a bit of inspiration my wife said . Your (Evan) channel is one that would serve as a good model for me .. so keep it up 👍
The best thing I ever did to stay inspired is learn to be ok with being bored from time to time. Great tips.
Fun fact: Ernest Hemingway, arguably one of the greatest American authors of all time, was an alcoholic. Creativity is subjective, but recognizing what stokes it and what subdues it is the lesson to learn. Great video.
Hemingway's creativity as an alcoholic says nothing about how creative he might have been without the alcohol. We will never know. We do know he committed suicide at age 57, so there is that.
This is exactly what I needed, I'm going through some of these bad habits at the moment, which is hindering my creative process and I've been trying to find a way to fix it for a couple of days now, and out of nowhere this video came up and all I have to say is thank you sooooooo much for this video I really appreciate you. 🙏🏾 and love you vids btw ❤️
Salute Evan, Always dropping gems and sharing your reality 🙌🏾👊🏾
thanks for brighting these topics man. that's so f**** true..
Looking at other peoples art tricks your brain into feeling like you have done something creative. Being strategic with using social media is really important. Great point my friend. 🤛
I needed to hear this! Thank you so much. It puts so many things into perspective.
Thanks a lot for videos like this Evan. It helps me a lot with same struggles :(
thank you Evan, for me is exactly that time of the year when I'm down and your videos like this last brings me back on the way!
Your a top man Evan. Smashing it pal 👊 Seems like you've got great family and friends supporting you along which is radiating from you to all our antennas. Goes to show we all aren't that far similar to each other its just a matter of self control and the burning desire to go after what we believe we can accomplish. And to those like me starting off soaking all these videos in on RUclips every second is aiding towards 10,000 hrs of mastery so don't be mad if you stay in the day. Just make sure you shoot on a regular basis. Key thing is consistently give 10+ mins a day to this trade for pretty much the rest of your life or atleast until you decide you mastered it and want to try something new in 10+yrs time 🤣 Goodluck everyone 🙏 Oh and running is the best exercise hands down! 5ks are the sweet spot not to bad on the knees 😉
Honestly the best thing I learned has to be that nothing is something worth doing, took me suffering a traumatic brain injury and 8 minutes of death to realize that during years of recovery being unable to work, let that message sink in, nothing is something worth doing. You require recovery periods, there is nothing wrong with taking a hiatus if you need it, if you're noticing your creativity and mental status slipping away then take a break, an hour a week, longer whatever you need.
Very inspiring! Thank you for your videos ☺️
Some great points to think about. Thanks Evan.
This is a solid video. I feel like your ideas shared here transcends across a lot of creative spaces, not just photography.
Thank you for making this video, I really needed it!!
For me, I need to do both planning time, and doing time. Set a limit to both. In planning time, come up with what is needed (sleep is needed here), and expectations (so you know when to stop), but in doing time, let go, and do it (sleep is not so necessary in doing).
What's crazy is I'm drinking wine as I'm watching this video tonight. 🤣Thanks for these tips. Going to start implementing them. Thanks, Evan! 🙏🏾
Man these are really good recommendations in general even outside of creative professions or entrepreneurship. I struggle with the same things in my career in the technology industry. Lifestyles here in the US seem to be hectic and small adjustments to any of these things have always made a change for the better. I 100% agree with cutting back/out alcohol and getting sleep and would recommend even starting there since it's "accessible" for most people. Great video Evan!
Great stuff, man, thanks for sharing!
This is all so true. Sleep is my nemesis best creative writing days are if I have had enough hours of sleep. I struggle when I don't have enough sleep.
BRO you have a gorgeous balcony and balcony view! Did you shoot this in the morning?
Thank you for this man 💯💯
incredible important video. Especially about alcohol. Know it and feel a big difference when I´m not drinking some beers.
Healthy body, healthy mind!
great video and very important messages so relevant especially these times !
Love the list!
Where them washed jeans from tho?
Exactly the video I needed today! Loving the content you've been putting out man, it always comes with some wisdom 🙌
It can be hard breaking a bad habit and replacing it with a good one. Well worth it though. Great video
I appreciate this video. Thanks, Evan!
Love the content! I think we all as people have a time when we have to re focus and sharpen up, which is definitely essential to our creativity.
Keep up the great content!
Great video Evan! Always good advice that is very thought provoking!
Off topic, but I'd love to see a bts photoshoot video of your sneaker collection...I dunno where you keep them all in a small apartment, but I know you must have a lot based off what I've seen over the years in your videos! :)
Really helpful advise from someone with experience. Battle with these demons daily.
PURPLE….. hell of an intro.
My biggest discouragement has been the lack of growth. I feel like my content is good, my titles work, and my thumbnails are good, too. Of course, there’s always room to improve, but I feel like I can’t figure out the disconnect. THAT’S the biggest destroyer of creativity to me…. Not seeing an impact.
ehh yoo that blue colour correct is hittinnnnnnnn in this video, loved it
Does the single Aperture light you use light the entire room with color like that or do you use extras?
Love your content mate , keep your energy up ♥
you always motivate me to do my best ♥
Hey. I enjoyed the video. Thanks for the content and hard work.
I want to add a caveat to your Social Media comment: It really depends on how you consume Social Media. I started consuming social media to reinforce my belief that my weird style is not bad. There are weirder styles out there that are great and there are other people with my same or similar weird style. It has kept me from quitting again.
There are many people on Social Media that inspire me to be creative and be myself not to copy them.
Thank You man 👍🏻
just cant let Creativity go
People don't realize how tightly knit diet(and in turn gut bacteria) and mental health are.
Your GI system heavily regulates your serotonin. The makeup of your gut bacteria has a huge impact on the regulation of serotonin. I learned this the hard way. I've been dealing with depression for years, and the first medication that I was on, Sertraline, heavily affects the way your GI system works. My gut biome was destroyed for about a year until I got off of Sertraline.
Well said bro great video!👍🏾
Great one! Very motivating.
Thanks for sharing!
"I start lookin like a Q-tip" had me dead 😂🤣💀
I think there was a study which showed that drinking alcohol before going to bed might actually wake you up during the night, thus disrupting your sleep schedule.
Daily shower has helped me a lot lately!
Thanks bro
Awesome video, i laughed out loud when you said if you dont get a hair cut you look like a Q-tip 😅
Bro that thumbnail is 🔥🔥
Alcohol will also destroy your sleep, you'll wake up tired even after 7-8h of sleep.
Without Bourbon there is no edits !!!
Alcohol before bed, though it may help you get to sleep, has been shown to decrease sleep quality by decreasing the amount of time in deep sleep. Last I heard the verdict is still out on marijuana. Matthew Walker says the best thing we can do to improve our sleep is regularity - go to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time. This is more important than when you sleep, even. It is important to note that poor sleep has longer lasting effects than tiredness and health in the short term. It's been linked with Alzheimer's, for example.
Dat boi whipped out the Nintendo 64 let’s go 🔥
Yah know I had this exact thought yesterday🤨
Perfect timing 💪
good video
Oh shit he just called me out
I have met creatives who believe they must drink in order to create.this is sad. Alcohol is a carcinogen, no matter what B's you may hear about wine and heart health, wine = alcohol= carcinogen.Think about it.
👍🏻
An argument can be made that a foul mood can foster some incredibly creative work (Edgar Alan Poe, Van Gogh, Morrissey....)
