EVEN MORE Leather Tricks & Tips!
For the end of the year, we asked you on instagram (@CorterLeather) to ask us anything you'd like to know about leather tips, tricks, business, etc. Here are our answers, and a bonus little watch collection at the end for those of you interested! Happy holidays :)
You have made a huge difference in my life. Things like that sound crazy but let me explain. I'm a disabled vet, I stumbled in leather work one day in hobby lobby. Your channel was one of the first I saw. One of your patterns was free, so it was my first. Nothing I made was of high quality, but I fell in love with the process. I have self harm issues, survivors guilt. The process felt amazing because the bad stuff went away. I have bought patterns, made gifts, made a wallet if my own design for myself. Thank you for all you do, it really does make a big difference for me.
Much love Michael! 💜
Love you man hope you are doing well
I love that you said we can use your patterns to make things to sell! In my many years as a maker I have been disappointed by that stipulation on the hundreds of patterns I’ve bought for sewing, quilting, knitting and on and on. It’s generous and kind of you to teach and share. You guys make excellent footage. I like that you get straight to the point with just enough fun banter. 😊🎨❤
Your project videos are great but I really appreciate when artists show their actual working spaces, show things that didn't work out as planned and talk about how they do business. Even though this is a hobby for me and I don't intend to make a business of it, hearing how someone else is able to make a living, and thriving, doing creative things makes my stuck in a corporate world heart happy.
Could you do a tutorial on adding fabric liners to a wallet? love the videos!
Agreed, thats got me stumped too
I would love to see more stuff from you in second channel format of some kind. I would love a more business oriented video as I'm just starting to get clients for leatherwork and I always feel like I'm underselling my own value after the fact.
What helped me realize my worth was having someone else sell my stuff now and then. Let them price it. Soon you’ll see it sell at their prices and you’ll adjust yours.
@@flashpointbravo That's good advice. Same thing happened to me early in knifemaking. I was selling fairly high end knives for like $150 just to get things going early, and local sellers asked for batches to re-sell. They were just flipping them for like $275. So after that, I raised my prices and got out of that wholesale market for now. If they can't sell it, or they over sell it, either outcome will teach you something about your product.
When I first started watching your videos I thought you were “ just” a talented artisan
Then I saw glimpses. This video just confirms you are a modern day “ hippie”. I was born in 1960 so in my mind this is not a bad thing🙏 Your reverence for the Vietnam war is pretty amazing.
Definitely I would like to see the renovation. Merry Christmas to you and your family and Kaliena and hers. And a Joyous New Year
I think a second channel showing your work renovating your new shop would be fantastic!
I would also love to see that second channel! But I also totally understand the anonymity issues with anxiety - I can't even handle people I actually know some days coming up to me when I leave the house. Always love the wallet and bag vids, they really help me stay excited on crafting, but I'll be honest - I found you last year or so because of the leather cup video, so the stuff like that that's kinda more out there might be my favorite. I'm always looking for that next dopamine high from learning something new...
My dad has his Seiko watch that he wore during one of his tours in Vietnam…it’s the same model you have there like Martin Sheen wore in Apocalypse Now. Such a cool watch and the look is so much in keeping with the aesthetic of the era. I have a photo of him wearing it while looking down the sights of his M60 while flying over the highlands of northern S Vietnam with his flight helmet with blacked out face shield. And another where the watch is visible along with a couple big chunky silver rings and an old school poke your own hole type can of Budweiser kicked back with tiger stripe camo on and wearing a smooth looking hat with one side of the brim pinned up against the side. I forget what he called it…. But he looked like a badass in the pic and apparently liked that hat a lot but had lost it somehow…until a few years back when the daughter of one of the men he served with contacted him and said her father had passed but he had a hat with a note on it to give it back to (dads nickname) which he planned to do at their next reunion. Somehow her father ended up with his hat all the way back in ‘69 and he still had it and knew who it belonged to. So that hat is now hanging alongside his watch. The watch is sitting on a shelf he has with some of his memorabilia from his time in the Army. He did a tour as a forward observer, then ended up being told to raise his hand one day only to find out that he’d just volunteered to learn how to be a door gunner. Apparently they were very short on door gunners because it’s not an easy job that everyone is good at…and they had a pretty high casualty rate due to the pace of operations and the inherent dangers of hanging out the side of a gunship in combat. He only ended up in 3 crashes so seems like it was pretty safe. Lol! Anyway, his watch is posted up on his shelf next to a sweet pair of gold plated aviator sunglasses which unfortunately have not aged well…the ear pieces look to be similar to Bakelite and have apparently given in to years of UV exposure and are just crumbling to pieces. The watch is in relatively decent shape but needs to be cleaned and gone thru. It’s on a thick leather bracelet that looks to have been handmade by someone somewhere…. It’s very late 60s early 70s in it’s style. Single piece bracelet so the watch sits on leather. I’m thinking about recreating the band in a slightly less bulky and wide version for a watch I have in a similar style. Sorry, seems like I hade something relevant yo say about the watch but got sidetracked rambling on about the old man. My bad.
Not sure if y'all use an external mic on the cameras, but I would recommend the Deity D4 Duo mic. You can set it to record from the front and back of the mic, making your speech much more clear when behind the camera. It's $50 on Amazon, and works amazing for me when I film short films and such. It doesnt require anything special. Just plug it into the camera, and youre good to go. Just make sure the jack is plugged into the OUTPUT part of the mic and not input.
I just love the succulents in your shop!
As someone who grew up in a house built in the 1890s, I would like to see you renovating an old farm house in a completely different part of the country.
You seem very handy diy wise so I'd definitely like to see you have a second channel!
Thank you so much for preparing these videos. I have learned so much and wish you all the best.
I’d love to follow the farm reno. I’m totally intrigued by your whole off grid choice.
The tips were great, always love those but the watch segment was special. I love hearing about someone's collection. Doesn't matter what it is, I don't even wear a watch. It was just fun and I enjoyed it alot.
I would love to see a guitar strap tutorial!
would love to see the new channel content! I vote Yes!
I would definitely watch that second channel!
That's it!😊 Practice, Practice, Practice 🫡
Camp Fire Girls! That banner gave me feels! I raised a Camp Fire Girl and a Camp Fire Boy!
Thank you so much for videos. I'm new to the leather crafting and I find your videos really enjoyable and informative 😉
Business topic: what’s better than Etsy for selling. Their fees have gotten quite high
Thank you for your videos man. I've went back through your videos a ton to learn, and they've helped so much. Always a joy to watch. Merry Christmas!
Thanks for sharing- the bonus watch info was super cool
Thank you for what you do! I have learned so much from your channel. I’ve always loved leather and the smell of leather. Here in the last year or so I have started working with leather as a hobby. I am now thinking that I will supplement my retirement by selling leather wallets, passport cover, checkbook etc. I have several of your patterns and really liked them. I have some cape buffalo hide that my dad harvested when he went to Africa several years ago and have made several items with it and it is really nice hard to work with but really nice.
I got into this craft a year ago and must say your videos and patterns helped me getting started. I’m a fellow MA resident and support Buckleguy because it’s hometown, good product and was happy with the customer service when I called about an order. Funny that I watch videos about watches but can’t get myself to drop the big $$ on one. I have had my eye on a Seiko5! Thanks for showing your collection.
The alternative channel sounds interesting. Keep up the great work.
Thank you for this video! Also great watches! I love Seiko and Squale! For me Seiko Turtles and Squale 1521 are greatest for edc.
Merry Christmas Eric and to Your family, thanks for teaching us a ton of amazing stuff 🎄🎄🎄
That Campfire Girls banner gives me nostalgia
yes we want to see that
Merry Christmas to you guys have a safe day
I would Love a second channel!
On those new card holders you designed (ever see the double sided ones)? We had them 4-5 yrs ago.& I loved em.
Merry Christmas!
This is a great video. Also you either like John Mayer or the design of his Collab with G-Shock. I have the same watch and it’s a joy to wear here and there. 🙂 Thanks for your wonderful videos over the years-looking forward to many more years.
"corter" is in reference to "might be a quarter life crisis", my screen name on AOL was corterlifecrisis :) very, very big John Mayer fan :)
great video and apart from your very cool workshops love your watch collection, feel that you would benefit from a seiko Pepsi pouge with the orange face and Pepsi besil .
Love the watches. I started leather crafting to make watch straps for my watches! It was a hard project to start on. Please show some more in the future.
Could you do one on how to get larger projects? Like how to approach company’s or people.
If u see this. Pick up flexcut yellow compound.
Flexcut I'd a wood carving company I use. Their yellow compound has the best grit structure for sharpening but also polishing knife edge.
you are showing your Zodiac Killer style watch, i grew up in San Fran , when the Zodiac killer was killing people in san fran and the bay area.
you are definitely one of my favorite leathers crafter and video makers. rob
A second Channel would be really interesting! I also love the bussiness videos. But the projekt and Tipps and Tricks videos are still best to learn and relax at the Same time. Your videos are always a perfekt motivation to go in the shop and finish the Orders. Keep up the great work!
A second channel would be great. I love restauration work.
Would love to see the 1900 tour
yes to the farm video
Can you do a video on fulfillment centers? I've heard about them but I'm having trouble finding a reputable one.
Would love to see how you build out and improve your workspace on a second channel.
lol, your reason for wanting to learn how to make moccasins is the same as mine. Finding Size 14EE shoes is hard. :)
I just finished my first pair (for the grandson, smaller feet so less cost to error) Ill say right now, most of the videos I watched on hard sole moccasins were wrong or incorrect in some manner. I did find a site with good info and will be starting a pair for the wife this weekend. Trying a different method of sewing the uppers to the soles plus she wants a rubber sole attached so that will be a new step. After that I plan on starting to work the pattern for mine.
Let me know of you want any pointers, email is in my profile.
Another great video.
Great video! I would love to see your second channel!
I would watch your renovation channel
Thank you so much for another great video. What camera did you use during the filming of this video. I know you said it was a Sony but the image and colour are amazing. Can you tell us more about your fulfillment centre?
Merry Christmas to you and Kalene (sp?).
Watch strap patterns would be amazing to have from you
my wallet is ready for that
I bought tape that’s used to glue the Screen into Cell Phones. It’s permanent and you can’t really take it off again. But I have so far no issues with it.
Can you get that tape in small quantities? What is it called and where do you find it? Thanks!
I love your channel. So inspiring - and I love that you share so willingly. I too have panic disorder and I think the lack of ability to shut one's brain off goes with that. 🤔
@Corter Leather I've been really enjoying your video's. You've helped me learn a nice selection of techniques for my own beginning leather hobby. I do have a question though, where can I find those cloth bags you use for burnishing? I've tried looking, but I'm assuming I haven't used the correct search terms. Thanks.
I've found out that just a scrap piece of denim works great for burnishing. 🙂
@@s.engelsman4521 Thanks, I'll try that.
Have you tried rubbing some pencil into the engraving to darken it up to make it more visible? I had to do that with an old serial number on something once that needed a replacement part.
Thanks for letting us know more about you.
I watched another video you made, unsure which one. You used a sticky tape like leather stiffner. Where can I find that to purchase. Thanks
Re: the glue. Oil Tan leather is difficult to glue or use tape. However, I found success with Reina Aquilim glue.
this camera has better sound, i usually have to turn on a bluetooth speaker to hear your videos, but not today!
Would you have a list of beginner supplies I should get?
You are a gem, thank you for you!
Nice stuff
Nice video… lots of ideas & info.
Enjoyed your watch collection..I bought several Sekios while serving over in south east Asia during the war. I would like to get my watches serviced and brought back to life who does your watches...please send info...thank you
FWIW, I think it’s cool that you don’t show your face. Makes your channel different and keeps the content focused on the work, which makes for a more efficient video I think.
If you’re working on a project and accidentally scratch or scuff it while sanding or otherwise, is there any good way to fix that?
please let us know about your other remodeling channel!!!!! 100% will love to subscribe
I’d love to see the Reno videos
I'm in the middle of trying to make small gifts for my family and found that I am having a lot of trouble using the leather I ordered online. It's all thin( 1-2 mm) upholstery pieces and all chrome or oil tanned. The feel is great, but it's so soft that stitching is a challenge and beveling esp. is not even possible. Can I use something to make the edges firm enough to bevel? I would like to know what will work as a stiffener for a wallet with this soft chrome?
which leather hide do you use for making goods?
What is the spacing on your stitching chisels?
Always enjoy your videos, but maybe slow the movement of the camera 'cause you're giving me motion sickness! (Seriously 😵💫 )
Same here. I think being slower would do it.
How long does it take to become a leather maker
Do the second channel!
Leather stocking
Charlie sheen was in platoon, Martin sheen was in apocalypse now.
I alllllways get those mixed up haha - thank you!
@@Corter the actors look really similar and the movie being set during the Vietnam war, it’s almost like the movie industry set us up for making that mistake.
@@Corter by the way, I love all your content and your contribution to the craft. I didn’t mean to pick out a mistake and throw it in your face, I hope you didn’t take it like I was picking at a fault.
