Okay, gonna try to give you a history of Jinjer. Band was formed in 2009 with 3 male members, Maksym Fatullaiev (vocals), Dmitriy Oksen (rhythm guitar and founder of Jinjer), and Vyacheslav Okhrimenko (drums), all from Ukraine. In 2010, Maksym & Vyacheslav left the band and Tatiana & Roman (guitarist) joined. A year later Eugene (bassist) joined. In 2015, Dmitriy left the band to pursue an acting carrer. They went through several drummers (one of which fell asleep on a window sill, fell out, and becoming paralyzed), until 2016 when Vlad became their current drummer. All were from Ukraine and had to leave due to the war in their towns. For several years they were just touring and traveling without a home until recent when they settled in Kiev, Ukraine where the war isn't having as much of an impact. If you watch their video Home Back, it's all about the war in their country.

Tatiana writes some of the best lyrics especially since English is not her first language and she writes in Ukrainian and then translates it to English. Anyway the lyrics We came from the lands
    Where kindness equals weakness
    Feelings are conditional
    And help is something supernatural
Your judgments sign your own punishment
Your judgments sign your own punishment
Yes, it is what it is
    I know you're pissed off
    Narrow minds cannot believe
    What they hear
An individual with bitter inner world
Is a cause of deficiency of goodness and love
    Of goodness and love
All your good intentions are muted and disabled (Booyah!)
Tell me what you're gonna bring to the table?
Do you know we're gonna eat at the same table?
    This is what it is!
    I know you're pissed off
    Narrow minds cannot believe
    In what they hear
Their system of beliefs experiences stress
Mental impenitence put into the test
    So, if you are here
To bring the atmosphere of fear
    Don't bother, brother
    Don't bother, brother
    The power of speech
    Is idled away
    Poison is spilled
    Dirty moths sting
    Sting
    Don't bother, brother
We've seen things that can't be unseen
    Don't bother, brother
That's exactly what makes us go even farther
    This is what it is
    I know you're pissed off

    In what they hear

Great reaction you guys! Was fun watching you navigate this one. I love this song from Jinjer and performance from Tatiana! The name Jinjer actually was simply what the sound of distorted guitars make in a palm muted power cord. There is no hidden meaning or anything else, it was just a silly name mean to mimic the sound of heavy metal guitar tone founded way back at the beginning before Tatiana was even in the band. Back when they had a male singer in 08/09. There are no original members left, but Roman on the guitar is the longest standing member, with Tatiana second I believe and Eugene on bass right about the same time. The thing is all the members current and from past knew each other running in small circles in the music and party scene in small town in Ukrain, and played in each other old bands etc. There is a lot more to the story but it would fill the entire page, so this is all I'm going to offer.

Yep, she is definitely extremely talented. Her technique is actually pretty unique. She taught herself. She tried learning through RUclips instruction videos and that kind of stuff but found it didn't work for her. She then started doing it with a band and it started to make sense to her, but she can't explain it. A lot of people try to define it and categorize it and it really seems to be pretty unique to her. She seems to do a mix of common techniques but in her own way. So the sound is definitely more unique. I've heard a fair amount of growlers and screamers and she definitely has much more depth and sound behind her growls and screams. A lot of times a pure false cord growl will be pretty hollow sounding. She definitely sings and growls/screams from her soul. Love it. Here's the Loudwire interview about how she learned how to scream: ruclips.net/video/UBrqWYMBm60/видео.html&ab_channel=Loudwire
As far as understanding it, it'll take a bit of time, but definitely, like any song, have the lyrics handy. I have to do that with just "regular" songs sometimes depending on what's going on with the music. But you'll start understanding her pretty quickly. She does a really good job of enunciating when she goes into her extreme vocals (compared to others I've heard). She does her best as she really wants people to understand what she is saying as she puts a lot effort into the lyrics. She isn't just making noise to make noise and sound "cool". She uses her different vocals to express what she is saying. All of their songs have a message. There isn't really any shallow stuff from them. Another reason I like them.
Definitely do Who is Gonna Be the One live. The ending has some cool stuff you'll like since you liked this. A great performance: Who is Gonna Be the One: Live at Atlas 2017 - ruclips.net/video/U6rv5qi8-8s/видео.html&ab_channel=NapalmRecords

As far as the other 2 idk but also none of the 4 current members were one of the 5 members on the first EP Tati, Roman and Eugene all joined before the 2nd EP/ 1st album depending on what country ur in. Great analysis and fun. :) I never listened to growls until I found Jinjer, took a while for my ears to learn to decode the distortion. It gets easier. Nobody will criticize you for reading lyrics of Jinjer songs - before, during, or after. And if they do they are stupid haha. Gotta see them in an on-stage recording now. Perennial live at Wacken is similar in hardness to Pisces. Who Is Gonna Be The One is harder than this with even lower growls, but also has a bit of reggae.
Tati is always asking the guys to compose more reggae, but it depends on what riffs they think up. They create the music first, then she finds inspiration for the lyrics and weaves her vocals into the musical composition.

To be honest, it takes practice to hear what vocalists are saying when they growl. I usually just look up the lyrics and read through them while listening. Then it starts to stick. And I’ve been listening to metal for decades. It’s not easy. Personally, I think I looking up the lyrics is important in metal because the lyrics are so deep. So, it’s not a bad thing. 😊

She actually has a very clear growl. The thing about harsh vocals like this is the more you listen to the style, easier it is to hear what they're saying. Having someone good at it also helps :)

Spiritbox, Infected Rain, The Anchor and Lauren Babic are all bands/artists that have female vocalists that are similar to Jinjer. Spiritbox has some one take vocal recordings on their channel.

I believe Eugene is an original member of Jinjer but the rest all came in at different times and evetually built the Jinjer that it is today. None of them kniw why its their band name. Or ive heard Tati say. She was also making Ska music before she got into heavy metal

An important thing to understand about how the growl sound is generated is that you do not engage your vocal folds. This means all the distortion that makes the sound is being generated by different parts of your throat and neck wiggling which is far less precise than your vocal folds which are a high precision part of your body.
If you want to get an idea of how that affects the way you say words try to speak with burps or coughs. You'll see that it's very easy to make vowel sounds because those are typically only controlled with the shape of the mouth but consonants get significantly blunted. This will cause Tatiana to stress different sounds and words when she's singing then when she's growling. once you learn to pick up this basic difference it becomes very easy to understand what she's saying. But it does take some practice either listening to a bunch of different screamers while reading the lyrics to kind of pick up on it or trying to do it yourself so you can get used to how it would sound if you tried to say it.

Not sure if you have done teacher teacher by Jinjer .. but that technically is one of my favorite songs by them, I have went to Catholic school and it reminds me of a lot that happened back in those days 35 years ago. I am 47 years old now and I went to Catholic school from kindergarten until 6th grade....

Also to answer some of your questions about Jinjer ... None of the people in the band now were originally in the band from the beginning. They decided to keep the name and based on the group's decision the name of the band Jinjer describes the sound of the guitars ... Jin , jer .... As they have mentioned in one of their several interviews.

    • @briburwhyudie

And you had mentioned not being able to understand the growls, that is something you have to get an ear for because technically I have been into rock and heavy metal music most of my life and it is easy for me to understand but it is very hard for me to understand a lot of rap music because of the way things are said in rap music. It is just a matter of if you have an ear for it and the more you listen to the more you get an ear for

Good reaction. I have problems picking up the growl too. Lyric sheets help. Try JINJER - Who Is Gonna Be The One (Live) | Napalm Records to see a great live performance from the band and how they integrate reggae into their vibe. Keep counting the beats through the song.

Fun reaction! Aweome display of vocal skill in an amazing blend of genres! About the growls, the more your hear the more you pick up, and Tatiana´s growls are easier to get than general because of her technique and the way she enunciates every word. They have a lot of genres incorporated but this is the only one with pure reaggae. You can try "Who´s Gonna Be The One" live, it has a ska reaggaeish part in it, it´s a hell of a track and the live performance is one of their best. Peace.

Your judgements sign your own punishment
The founding member vocalist of Jinjer is a guy called Maxime, but they already had that mixture of screams and cleans at the time. Most of the founding members only stuck around for a year or two, Tatiana, Roman and Eugene are with the band for a pretty long time now, and Vlad is now their longest lasting drummer too. Tatiana initially joined the band as a short term replacement, but was such a good fit that she became the main vocalist.
Tatiana herself was in a couple other bands before. I give you a couple example videos, but they're obviously not the same audio quality. Prophecy was already similar to Jinjer in that it was metal with mixed vocals, while The Kodry was more of a reggae / jazz type of band.
Super rare video of Tatiana Shmayluk with former band Prophecy (before Jinjer): ruclips.net/video/KGoaElBN7xg/видео.html
КоDrЫ Tatiana Shmaylyuk before Jinjer in her band The Kodry - Dub Vader: ruclips.net/video/YEclFxlVfvo/видео.html
Understanding her growls and screams is a matter of getting used to it. Try to listen to the song again while reading the lyrics and you'll hear it. The story of that technique is a lot of blown out voices and permanently damaged vocal cords of death metal vocalists, until at some point someone figured out a way to do this safely. Nowadays there are a few vocal coaches that can teach you, but Tatiana is self taught and doesn't fully know what or how she is doing it herself.
This and Who Is Gonna Be The One live are the only Jinjer songs with a bit of reggae mixed in. We should get new songs and a new album this year though, who knows what that contains, as every album so far is very different in terms of style.
