- Could this be the WORST Chinese diesel heater install in the world... Maybe! But we powered on this week, through error codes, ill fitting exhausts and flat batteries!
How do you stay warm in your van conversion?
This week we are putting systems in place to ensure we have hot water and heating! We are using a Chinese diesel heater and a Bobil heat conversion system to get both of these things!
A full list of our Chinese Diesel Heater Modifications and Upgrades can be found in our blog here:
www.maxandsoph...
Our system comprises of a 2kw Chinese Diesel Heater and a 60mm Bobil Basic Bobil Heater all housed within a DIY Diesel Heater Box. We built the box using 3mm aluminium chequer plate and 25mm aluminium angle extrusion, fixed together with rivets and rivnuts for the opening side. This week we ran the silicone Bobil lines between the hot water tank and the Bobil heater with an in-line 12v pump. We connected up our diesel heater with upgraded 60mm neoprene ducting (as it is mounted under the van, this will stand up to the weather better) and our fuel line, fuel filter, fuel pump, combustion air intake and exhaust.
We also received an Error code E-06 when we turned on the heater - which was fixed by moving the fan down its spindle - you can watch this fix at 25:03
After this week it feels like we are well on our way to making our very own tiny house on wheels with our Vario Van Conversion! Getting warmth into the van is going to be such an achievement! If you want to keep right up to date please follow us on Instagram! @maxandsophieinavan

Your love for each other is obvious. Keep up the good work xx
Your going to route the pipe pronounced (root) we gave the world the English language let's keep it. You're making a splendid job of the conversion I did one in the mid seventies on a Bedford CF Luton van.
yeah I don't get why they say it the American way.
A little secret but Max is American - it slips out sometimes 😂 the Bedford sounds amazing!
Your honesty and transparency are wonderful. Your difficulties are reassuring.... a great build continues...
That’s so nice to hear because sometimes when we are working through it it’s so hard to stay motivated! Thank you so much 😊👍
Seriously you guys blow my mind ! Sooooo clever !!!! 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you!!! 🥰🥰
Yes our diesel heater pump continually clicks
That's great to know, thank you! :)
Great to see a bobil van heater Install. Will be useful to see if it works In. Practical terms to heat enough water for a shower. Also get some owertrol oil on those rust spots ASAP!! Is magical stuff
Thank you Justin, and we are really hopeful with it! And we’ll check that out, thank you! 😊👍
Hy guys ,
found this UK site on RUclips, he is one of this Heater freaks. Think it could help you sometimes.
Best wishes
Tommes
Hi Tommes, do you know what their channel is called? It sounds great! 😊👍
Ohhhhhhh sorry,
Look at this: ruclips.net/user/DavidMcLuckievideos
Sorry Tommes
That’s great, Thank you Tommes! 😊👌
Good job. I like the honesty of mistakes and the truth of how you dealt with them! Good luck guys!
It’s all about staying in the game... it works out in the end 👍
That’s so true Andrew! Thank you so much for watching! 😊👍
The pump ticks constantly. It's the only downside to these amazing heaters. You can wrap it in sound proofing stuff
We’ve found that out! Have some plans to quieten it down 😊👌
It seems a lot of people have mounted the diesel fuel pump on rubber mount to cut down on transmission of the ticking noise from pump
That’s a great tip, we’ve seen that a few times go so might give it a go! Thanks David! 😊👍
The pump does slow down as temperature is reached, as does the fan. I used a rubber mount like the type you used on your water pump board. I then attached a car rubber exhaust hanger from ebay before attaching my pump to that. It was worth the effort as I can't hear the pump at all.
Thank you Richard, we might look at doing that! We couldn’t believe such a small thing could make so much noise! 😂 👍
Great job again both you got there in the end 👏👌 looking good 👍😏🥂
Thanks so much Gavin! We did finally! 😊👍
I'm very much enjoying the videos, a very well thought out van. I sometimes get a bit of envy with bigger vans but when I remember the build on mine I'm more often glad of a smaller build, still a lot of the same headaches mind you but less things.
For your diesel heater, it should go really fast and load in the beginning and then tick slowly once it's heated up, that's the fuel pump you are hearing. To get rid of the sound I hung my pump up via a rubber exhaust bracket so it acts as a dampener, no I don't hear it inside my van at all.
Thank you so much Mike, it definitely is a big project to take on, but so is a smaller build too! And that’s good to know, and a great idea, I will look at ordering some and trying it out! 😊👍
Hey guys just an honest observation, but i noticed in a couple of places you put the flexi vent pipe inside some of the hard plastic flanges, flexi should be put over the hard plastic flange so it can be cable tied, or clamped, and as for the noise, it isn't helped by the fuel filter being cable tied to the anything, the pulse gets transfered down the pipe.. ..great to see it coming on, and all a learning curve, but good on you..
Thanks so much for the useful tips regarding cable ties Auden! From what I can remember I think we did a part from on the Bobil unit which has specific thread on the inside for it! But I’ll have a look back at what we did! Thank you so much for watching! 😊👍
great
Thank you! 😊👍
that had me on tender hooks for a minute, a big well done guys
We were too! 😂 thank you so much Tony! 😊
i think you mean tenterhooks ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Loving your build as I started at the beginning and binge watched them all.
Set backs have simply been pushed on through calm and steady and very professional, well done you two.
I too have just installed a diesel heater but in my garage and they are great. The ticking seems to slow when up to temperature.
Can I just say any 90 degree aluminium brackets will have a tendency to crack due to its movement. Steel is much better.
Keep up the good work. Richie.
Thank you so much, you must be fed up of our faces by now 😂 we will give it a proper test run when we can and hope we find that with the pump! And thank you for the tip, we will keep an eye on it and upgrade to steel when we need to 😊👍
@@MaxSophieinaVan sharp bends is the problem, when you make your steel bracket use a bigger radius for the bend. Steel does last better than aluminum but anything will fail if the bend is too tight.
You might want to consider 'killing 2 birds with one stone'? Make the bracket out of rubber, it takes the vibrations better & shouldn't transmit the ticking into the van...
Also, consider fitting a safety strap so nothing hits the road when the bracket breaks
Great job, Love the way you two come across on your vlogs, Keep up the great work and stay safe 👍👍🚙
Thank you so much, and we will try to! 😊👍
Hey lovely couple !!! Great work, i'm glad you got there in the end. Well done. :)
Thank you so much! We sure did eventually! 😊👍
Loving your vids. You 2 have learnt me a lot. Keep up the brilliant work.
Thank you so much! We will try! 😊👍
Great vid guys 😁 keep going 😁 u have learnt what I have learnt, always plan and order three steps in front of task so when things go wrong, as they always do with van builds, you can just switch to something else while you repair or order a bit 😉
Thank you so much, and that is so so true! Otherwise you just end up sat waiting for deliveries! 😊👍
Glad to see you guys got your ducts in a row 😋
Hahaha that gave us a good laugh! Hope you enjoyed 😊👍
greetings from Ireland I am having major problems with my diesel heater also its not a chinese one it was in the ambulance but its breaking my heart ... well done guys
Oh we really struggled this week but powered through, we believe in you too! You can do it! 😊👍
Yes the pump will run constantly because it needs to keep feeding the burner. I love my diesel heater in my trailer, I put a 8 kw heater and built sheet metal ducting and put vents in several areas. I did have to replace the pump around 6 months ago so when I ordered a new pump I got 2 of them just incase one fails and I'm in the middle of nowhere. Next project is converting a school bus into a camper (caravan)
That’s great to know, thank you! And are there a set of things that are good to keep as spares just in case? And that’s so exciting! Are you on Instagram/RUclips with the bus conversion? 😊👍
@@MaxSophieinaVan No I'm not on any social media
No worries, hopefully we’ll bump into you on the road someday! 😊
You've both done some good stuff but I'm sorry to sat that its not bad luck, its bad decisions, check twice and cut once. Its easier and cheaper. You still get the thumbs up for giving it a go, and your joinery. Both my diesel heaters tick all the time, its just the rate of ticking that changes.
Thank you for your thumbs up and tips with the ticking! We are learning as we go along 😊👍
Great vlog guys, showing the reality of van building... it doesn’t always run smooth, it’s not meant too 😂 Van conversions where invented to test us, pretty good invention me thinks 😬 well done and keep up the great work, soon be ready for the road 👍👍
Thank you so much, and that’s exactly what we were saying, it will all be worth it in the end and would be boring without some challenges! 😊👍
If you press the controller’s top right & top left buttons the display will switch from temp control to MHz control ( or simply the number of piston movements the pump makes per second ). This allows you to slow down the pimp manually while keeping the temperature ticking over using less fuel and creating far less noise.
This is exactly what we need, thank you so much for the tip! 😊👌
With regards to the noise the pump given with the heaters click non stop but if you mount it with a zip tie/tywrap it's all most silent. It's the rigid mount your using causing the vibration to go through the chassis. Hope this helps
That’s really useful to know, we’ll give that a go! Thank you so much 😊👍
You can still use the mount you have made just hang the pump so it's only touching the zip tie or ties if that makes sense
That makes complete sense! We may well give that a go tomorrow! Thank you! 😊👌
Good pipeage 😍
Haha thank you! 😂👍
Your pump may continuously tick as you have changed the fuel line. Doing this has increased the internal diameter thus needing to pump more fuel.
We matched the internal diameter of the original so it shouldn’t be this 😊👍
the heater will click slowly at the start then ramps up faster, it will only slow down again once you reach the desired heat level, can take a good while for it to turn down the pulse rate
That’s really good to know, thank you so much! 😊👍
Great vid folks. Each click represents a very specific amount of fuel being pumped so the more clicks the more fuel used. Super interested to see how the bobil works out time wise. I have a 30litre and a 15litre calorifier I am trying to hear a variety of ways and for the moment have parked the bobillvans but I might explore this again depending on your results. Great work. Chin up head down.
Thank you so much! And that’s really useful to know, we will do a proper report when we get it up and running properly! What other ways are you looking at heating it currently? 😊👍
@@MaxSophieinaVan so like you I am looking to use engine heat. I have a little valve that I can switch electrically from the cab when the engine is up to temperature. That will circulate the engine coolant around the first coil on the 30litre tank. The second coil is then connected to 15litre tank via a small pump going through a dirt cheap propane heater. I then have 12 and 240 volt heating elements in both tanks two. I have a few vids about it on my channel. I was looking at a diesel water heater as apposed to a diesel air heater but they so complicated and so costly. The propane heater would be used when we are not on hook up, not driving anywhere, don't have hook up power and solar is weak. So hopefully not often but as a good backup.
That sounds like a really good setup with an option for every eventuality! Will check out your channel 😊👍
@@MaxSophieinaVan well it's an experiment. Who knows if it will work out.
All the best things are experiments! Good luck with it 😊👌
_The pump will run/ tick always; however, it will slow down once it hit the desired temperature. That means the fan will slow, and the pump will drop its pulse rate to the preset rate with the master/ advance settings. Most of them are from 1.2 to 1.6 pulse the pump also pumps .02 ml per cycle regardless. Here the deal since you have installed the water core/ water heat exchanger will take much longer to push the air through the ducting. While some of your ducting are outside, it will take a bit more time to heat because of the coolest too. Hope this helps?_
That is all really useful, thank you so so much! We are going to get the van outside soon and will be able to give it a proper test run! 😊👍
I don't believe a 2Kw heater will heat your rig you definitely need a 5Kw! Sophie you are so FREAKIN HOT! Can't wait for warmer weather to see you without all those winter clothes!
Great video guys! Yes the heater starts at full blast and after a few minutes when it;'s up to temperature it sets at whatever setting you have it on, though my screen is differnt to yours so can't tell you much else. Also why did you have to extend the air intake, would it not be fine under the van just with a filter? And why would you want the intake near the cab specifically? Either way always a laugh and glad you got there in the end 👍
Thank you so much! And that’s really good to know, I’m sure we’ll get use to it’s quirks! And we wanted to get the air intake as far away from the heater output as possible but still have it inside so it is more efficient. So it is heating already slightly warm air rather than cold outside air, if that makes sense!? And the cab is the coldest part in our van due to all the windows! Really glad you enjoyed it! 😊👍
"back home" we used to sleep with a metronome next to our bed in our trucks just to take our minds off the diesel pump.
Hahaha that’s fantastic 😂👌
Like your build and enthusiasm. I have been considering the way you've installed the Bobil Heater and wondered how you intended to stop it freezing in cold weather?
Thank you so much! We are going to insulate the pipes and then hopefully stay in warmer places! We will also circulate the water regularly if we are somewhere cold 😊👍
I have one on my lorry and yes it clicks all the time whilst it is on
That’s so great to know, at least we weren’t doing something wrong! Thank you! 😊👍
Runs out to garage to get some conduit - I must only use this new found musical instrument to annoy.
Hahaha it’s Max’s new favourite hobby... 😂
You hot water from the heated should have gone into the top of the storage tank.
Are you going to have a separate Shurflo pump for the cold water?
Looking at putting one of this in my van but not sure how to run the cold and hot tanks off the same pump without needing manually switched valves on the pipework
That’s exactly right, almost two completely setups is what we have ended with! 😊👍
You can put heating floor
Thank you! Great idea 😊👍
Are you going to turn the Moggie into a tow behind?
I've heard about *_Chinese Diesel heaters_* a lot - is there something special about them that Diesel heaters from other countries don't have?
There sure is - the price!! Ours was around £85 and we have had years of hot dry heat! Beats the price of ‘proper’ ones 😂
I look forward to hearing how effective your Bobil heat exchanger works for the water. I have the opposite system in my Vario - Webasto water heater running to two heat exchangers with fans attached. It doesn’t seem very effective at heating the cab. I’m considering fitting a Chinese heater just for the cabin heating.
Was there a particular reason for mounting the heater under the van rather than inside? I have an ex police sprinter which has an Eberspacher airtronic inside (air intake and exhaust go through the floor).
It does a great job - hot air within a minute or so of turning on.
We will do a proper update when we have our kitchen tap and shower complete so we can fully show how it will work! And that sounds interesting, we are hoping it works well for us but might have to look at other options if it doesn’t!
Honestly it was just a storage decision. there is so much space under the chassis and it seemed silly not taking advantage of it! 😊👍
@@MaxSophieinaVan it does look like you want some lagging under there though the hot air pipe may get too hot & melt if it's lagged.
The diesel heater pumps usually tick every few seconds.
Thank you Richard! We just wanted to check if that’s normal 😂 👍
@@MaxSophieinaVan I’ve seen people mount them just hanging from a cable tie to make them quieter.
We have just had that conversation after watching some other people with theirs! So thank you Andrew, we might give that a try tomorrow! 😊👍
Measure seven times, cut thrice, and never NEVER try to sick to your (flawed) original plans - probably best if you don’t tell people what your plans are in advance, or record lots of options and fix it in the final edit 🤣🤣🤣
Hahaha that is the best tip we have heard so far! So true! 😂 👍
did you not use the temp sensors, or did i miss this?
We absolutely did, didn’t want to overdo the technical too much but yes - we’ve also added the multiplus temp sensor, and trickle charge feed over to our vehicle batteries, and two cat 6 cables, one to our Cerbo GX and one to our Multi Control Panel! Hope you enjoyed! 😊👍
Any plans for the rust under the van
We fully treated top side of everything underneath when we had our floor up and the back 3/4 of the underside too so just have the last bit near the steps to do 😊👍
@@MaxSophieinaVan cool may I suggest since you are at this stage to do some research on 1 - cavity waxing 2- red lights to prevent 🪰 3- outdoor lighting
Funnily enough we just ordered some cavity wax the other day! And please tell me more on red lights? We have thought about some lights we will attach to our roof rack to give us some light around the van when we need it! 😊👌
Hey guys, looking to order the same ducting as you, I have the same heater, does the 60mm neoprene you have the link to actually fit into the heater? I thought the outlet was larger than that?
Hia Joe, it was a bit of a faff actually! The ducting is amazing quality etc but we had a nightmare getting it to fit as it was all underslung in our box and difficult to get to. We ended up with a little connector (I’ll find a link) and then the original paper ducting internal to the underslung box, connector through the box wall and then fancy ducting externally 😊 hope that helps and give us a shout if you need any more info! 👍

I see heating floor in a old caravan because the floor lets cold in
Yes of course, we might have a think about adding that in! Thank you! 😊
How did the flash band sound deadening work out?
We are really happy with the results! Alongside the insulation there is such a difference! 😊👍
@@MaxSophieinaVan Think I will go for that as it's so much cheaper people say it will smell when warm but it will be behind a vapour barrier
Exactly, we thought about that too but it’s all sealed in so won’t bother us! 😊
Hi, is the diesel heater pump ticking audible inside the van?
Yeah it is, but it’s much quieter than some of our friends ones who have mounted theirs inside the vehicle! I think they are pretty noisy no matter where you put them (or that seems to be the consensus with people we’ve chatted to!) We’re very pleased with how quiet ours is in comparison!
Sorry my inglish mistake i hope you understand my idea
Your English is great! We understand! 👍
