I'm buying a 2017 Lancer ES with manual. I'm a simple guy, I like a simple car. Something about Lancers just sticks out to me above the 90 million Civics and Corollas you see on the streets.
Xavier Kunze same
These are garbage
Adam Vang nah they aren’t🤣🤣🤣 tf you saying? I mean I ain’t trynna argue with no one on a mfking youtube comment that’s your opinion but I don’t respect it
Hi! I'm planning to buy the same car rn. How did the car behave for the last few years?
Lancers are always underdogs. That's why I like them.
I can't believe this thing has lived on as long as it has.
It's just business. Mitsubishi is too globally large with the backing of other corporate sectors to die. With the Nissan merger at least the brand name will be kept alive with vehicles that don't fit in Nissan's own lineup.
You were interested enough to come watch the video :)
U liked enuff to come and watch!
Theo Morrow Why? I speak facts...
I bought one and love it. Perfect in every way just wish they made a evo. 😞
I don't care,I am getting this car. I've always liked the design of the lancer and if they've kept it the same all these years it just shows how reliable it is. Every "new" car all look the same now, civics, elantras, blah blah but it's just something about lancers that get to me...
That's so true. This car is a living classic!
I just bought a Lancer SEL a few days ago. I bought it because of it's classic look. It handles great. I have the sun and sound package. The warranty is fantastic.
Vince P you will love it man. I'm the same way I always wanted one when I was in high school and now I drive it everywhere
Agree with Helveticatree. You'll love it. I bought a 2016 Lancer SE. That 2.4L gives it high power-to-weight ratio. It can easily beat most cars during acceleration from a traffic light stop. Today I tested its AWC system in the nearby snowy mountains. Well worth it.
I just upgraded my 2015 to the 2017 lancer gt awc and I loved them both. Never had any issues and I actually like the simplicity of the interior design.
Yeah we all know it's an old design. It's obvious. The fuel economy sucks because it's old technology. But because of this, the bugs have been worked out and it's one damn solid little car. Reliable as hell. You won't pay anywhere near sticker. Mitsubishi discounts them heavily. If you want to pay $5k more on a cutting edge Civic with a measly 36k mile warranty and unproven technology, go for it. I'd rather have this little tank with AWC, great warranty, at a steep discount.
Same here!
palebeachbum they could use direct injection and have it put in lancer to increase mpg and horsepower
Jaime Prado Yes direct injection would improve power. Fuel economy, that's debatable. Kia uses direct injection on most, if not all of their US cars and they have some of the worst MPG, but put out the most power.
Im getting 29 mpg city 39 highway. Damn good imo... cost $25 to fill up @ $2.00 per gallon plus the 100,000 mile 10 yr... 😄😄😄😄 shitin on honda
Jesse Bates not shitting on Honda. The turbo civic gets 32 city and 42 highway. That's the top tier engine. You have the 2.0 148 hp base engine. Hyundai gets better mileage from their base engine. 2.0 Atkinson cycle with 148 hp as well. Then they have the 2.0 GDI motor with 164-173 hp depending. My friend has the Elantra GT with 173 and he gets mixed 32 mpg. Then there's the 1.4 turbo that's 140 hp 157 tq with 33 city 44 Hwy. Also the 1.6 turbo with 201 hp can almost match your mileage figures. The civics base engine is far more advanced, and nearly has the same mpg figures with more hp and tq. I won't even get into other companies. The reason why Mitsubishi has to offer a long warranty is for people to buy the cars at all. They are a small shadow of what they once were. They are going to fold and pull out of the us in the next 10 years. I'd trade your car in for something that costs less, is more advanced, and won't give you a headache when you need to go to a dealer and they are gone. Happened to Suzuki. Mitsubishi is next
It's sad seeing Mitsubishi lack finance in their automobile industry now. They didn't wanna risk putting out a completely different Lancer because it's probably one of the most reliable vehicles you can buy outright with no trouble. It was heartbreaking seeing the Evo end its run, will be even sadder seeing them closing the curtains on the whole Lancer line. :(
CreoleRep7 Rip Lancer:x Was my dream car And I wanted to buy one of them in like 2 year when I will have the cash.. Will never get a brand new one unless they do a final edition like the evo..
Great video and spot on. Car still looks great for being a decade old.
I just bought a blue 2017 SEL LANCER with sun and sound pkg w/remote start for $22.5k including gap insurance and taxes OTD. NO OTHER manufacturer can touch that and offer AWD.
neverendingmods just bought one for $10K with 29,000 miles on it you got robbed bro
My dad had one a few years back, and it was reliable as hell. You never pay sticker price for these, and they come with a 10 year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty. Mixed with a meager 11-17K, this is a good car.
I almost cried watching this car.
Yet it attracted you to watch!
Theo Morrow You mad bro? Why so angry?
Same 😢
Cos you're broke, cant buy one
I'm getting this car soon. 16,000 right now. Gonna put 5 grand down. Always loved lancers.
I have a 2010 Lancer with manual transmission and I must say the 2017 looks literally the same ! I agree with the reviewer in this video that this car has a very conservative solutions. The interior of my model is quite basic comparing to orher cars that age but it is quite dynamic and looks amazing. It has this cutting edge sporty look
I have my second lancer now gts and would get another one like that as they feel like a well balanced car, very reliable, keep the hwy nicely
I own one and love it! good on gas and great sport feel. Mines a limited 2 wheel clothe seats, but great to get from A to B. My next will be a EVO for the legal tune project hobby :)
You're gonna "evo" your lancer?
thank you Mitsubishi for the lancer year 2000 that I have...with zero problems..now I have the money for a new one :)white color please...
Thanks for that opening line.. I really miss my 3000GT VR4. Now many automakers have had down times but they make it through by reinventing themselves and eventually are able to bring back some of those popular cars. It's too bad Mitsubishi is too busy focusing on their heavy industry side and well enough to let their cars just die.
This is all I want in a modern car. Now to find one asap.
I’ve just bought A GT 2017 model with only 2000km milage. I don’t care what people says. Am an enthusiastic for this car and i feel the rigidity of old days when i enter my car. Even tho it’s only 150 hp but the feeling is beyond that power.
I traded my 2006 ES 2.4Ltr Lancer in on a 2017 Lancer 2.0 Ltr Blackedition last September. If you want a reliable car with good fuel econ and not to worried about draggin' every other car off at the lights, the Lancer wont let you down. It's a fun car to drive and sticks to to road really well. ai replaced the radio with an Alpine because the original didn't have GPS, Karen the dashboard driver keeps on telling me I'm speeding so the car can't be that slow. All cars have problems no matter what make they are, for the price the Lancer suits me quite well I have no regrets buying her. Oh and my 2006 model I had for 9 years, ran like a Swiss watch.
I like the lancer. It's too bad they are going to disco it. I hope they come up with another auto to fill in the gap....
My first car was a 04 Lancer ES. It was a cheap and reliable car! With more standard features than its competition at the time (I remember being wowed by standard AC and power windows lol)
I jumped to a Mazda 3 last year because Mitsu hasn't updated the lancer in a decade and I just had to look elsewhere... Sad to watch this slow death of the brand of cars... but loving my Mazda!
Classic body style and good leg room. A consideration since it was a consideration back in 08'.
No need to change something if it's good. I miss my V6 Eclipse GT sooooo much. I know this isn't the same, but thinking about it. Only thing is the CVT. Pretty sure I'd miss the feel of changing gears.
Shame Uk 🇬🇧 doesn’t sell them, I love their old skool look
Now that was one honest vehicle review. Refreshing.
Love mitsubishi. Great vehicles to drive in.
I can't believe you uploaded this cool video
This review is like the death knell of Mitsubishi, and it's not Steve's fault but I can't help but feel sad that we won't see another Evolution.
Say what you want regarding how old the platform is. The car still looks cool. You can tell what car this from the rear. Unlike the new Ford rear ends that stole from kia, or how the new cruz front end took from corolla.
On winter canadians road where the road is covered with snow and ice, the civic and the corolla just slide around. i see all those civic starting at a green light and by the time the light switch to yellow the car barely made it to the other end of the intersection. But the lancer awc for the same price will offer you a better control on the icy road. and the subaru not only is 4k more than the lancer where i am from. it as a smaller engine and the warranty is only 5 years or 100000km compare to 10 years or 160000km of mitsubichi.
My 2006 Lancer Ralliart was totaled on the 10th of January, so I bought the 2017 Lancer AWC, 2.4 SE with the 18" wheels. White, I love it. I was wondering should I continue driving in 2 wheel drive, auto or locked 4wheel, and does it burn more gas.
Drive it in 2-wheel drive when the roads are dry. It will save you on gas.
TestDriveNow Reviews by Auto Critic Steve Hammes Thanks, because I drove it today to work in 4WD on dry hwy, it did not really feel different from 2WD, so I will set it back to 2WD, thanks..
As a current owner of a RVR i gotta say that its a great car, but Mitsu does fall short on their interiors. They feel cheap and chose the wrong materials, even for the seats. The paddle shifters and AWC are the best, the motor is great on gas, and the exterior styling is nice.
If the AWC is a winner I'd consider the Lancer. It's good to know another AWC option is available.
It is very reliable and more hp than a Subaru.
The question is if they were so reliable why don't they have a solid reputation for reliability and why aren't they selling their cars anymore? In this segment people want a car that is reliable and a safe inventment with some bells and whistles to at least feel like they're getting a modern car in the 2017 model year. I loved Mitsubishi back in its hayday and while I never owned one, if they still made a car like the 1998 Eclipse GSX with the twin turbo engine I'd buy it in a second!
gmualum08 Mitsubishi has had sales increases every year since 2012. I have owned 3 of them and they were incredible cars, very fun and reliable. You admit you never even owned one.
gmualum08 the gsx was twin scroll turbo not twin turbo. I had the spyder. Had to put in the Evo 8 turbo with injectors fuel pump and a tune I was over 440 hp
buildmorefarms100 have you ever owned anything else other than a lancer? And which one did you have because they are all garbage now
Another great review. Really bittersweet. Like you, I remember old Eclipses and Evos, and would love to see this car--with its competitive pricing and great warranty--succeed. It just doesn't seem good enough, and--like you--I wonder if they just can't invest enough to make it truly competitive.
Re Mu
Do you not like your Lancer?
I agree about Evo being niche, but not when it comes to Eclipse/Talon. I'll bet they hoped to sell a million of those.
I guess it also depends what you think of a company's decision to bother making a niche car. If you think it signifies hope and enthusiasm for the brand, then its departure (especially from a struggling company) can be seen as worrisome. if you think making a niche car just distracts the company from its core business, then that's a huge problem, and discontinuing it is the right move.
Dang Steve this has to be the most
critical review yet!!!!
Nah...I've been harder on some others ;-)
TestDriveNow.com featuring Auto Critic Steve Hammes I think your i-miev from Mitsubishi comes to mind regarding a harsh vehicle review. Lol
Looking at cars at a car show today, and the Lancer surprisingly caught my eye. Always thought they were way too expensive, and find I can get one for just under $20,000.... It's so tempting. I've been looking at VW Golfs, Chevy Sonics, some Mazadas and some others. And this car just suddenly screams why not?
Sargonarhes same here, i had a mazda3 get totaled by a grandma and have been looking into newer jettas, possibly golfs, newer mazda3’s and i saw this and am getting it now
I love this car but am disappointed they removed the chrome that outlined the front grill like in the 2015 model. For me, that was a feature that really made mitsubishi stick out and compare against the audi in terms of looks
Not a fan of the “facelift”... there’s no aggression there anymore and removing the rear wing just makes the car look oddly proportioned from the side :/. Either way though wish we still had them in the UK, I Love my Lancer but they stopped production of the base models in 2011.... now they only make SUV’s
Sad to see how Mitsubishi has gone down hill after the evo 9 model. Use to own a 06 Lancer Evo 9. Loved that car! Maybe Mitsubishi should do what Hyundai does... great warranty and better looking suv and cars.
I use to have a 97 eclipse sypder. I had that car for over 10 years and it was very reliable. I got rid of it about a month ago and I miss it. I currently have a 01 Honda Crv SE and although it's reliable it's boring to drive. Looking to get one of these
Inside talks the lancers coming back in 2022
I personally like it, In fact I'm almost convinced of getting one, I simply don't like hondas and I think this one looks sportier than them :)
i like this car
Just bought one.... much nicer than my '12 Civic EX-L NAVI was, and 5 grand cheaper with more equipment, warranty, and horsepower than the Civic had... more roomy and nicer to look at too. Don't miss the GPS the Civic had either because it worked like crap. The heated leather seats actually heat up in the Lancer as well, Civic took 10-15 minutes to get 'warm' on high.
The existence and flourishing nature of Mazda & Subaru proves small companies when managed properly can work. Mitsubishi is slowly following the footsteps of Isuzu & Suzuki, and this is coming from someone who owns an Outlander in the family.
Watching this brought back some good and bad memories of my 2009 Evo X *le sigh*
Actually they have had sales increases every year since 2012 in the USA.
Theo Morrow lot of other brands have parts build by mitsubishi, that's why mitsubishi is one of the most profitable car brands, just like they do when providing like 70% of parts to build a boeing airplane, everytime other brands sell a car that has like 10% of parts by mitsubishi, is like they selling one car every 10 cars of the other brands, gm, mazda, even vw have parts by mitsubishi, that's why mitsubishi is never going to leave the market, also in particular this car has something no one else has had in 10 years, for example the turning circle, or the steering wheel ratio that gives the funny driving over any other sedan that could come to your mind.
gabojm dude the turning circle is not even that great. It's a compact sedan. It's not even midsize. If it is trying to be that then it's even more garbage. It has no upgrade engine choice besides the Chrysler built 2.4 world engine. That engine should be standard first of all. It should have at least the 3.0 V6 or the 2.4 turbo that was found in the ralliart. They have too thin of a lineup with no real solid offerings of their own
Can’t wait to get this car next year
very good review. thanks !!! I will buy it maybe next year, so then the model 2018...
I want to like this Lancer. The really old Lancer is overall a great car. It's got tons of stuff for a decent price. Resale sinks faster than the titanic but it's a good car. Like steve said, it's stuck in a time warp. Mitsu is lost. I remember seeing a docu about Mitsu about way back in the 80's how mitsu was going to overtake the US market. That never happened but made some decent stuff.
The "new" 2018 Lancer looks sweet but who knows if we will get it.
Not happening here, from what I'm told.
My future car
From a certain view it looks like a scion tc and I like it. Hope they don't discontinue it
It's already gone.
I heard that lancer Gt got axe for 2017 so highest trim is that new SEL trim ?
Dealers here in Florida have this car available for about $12,000....
I am currently trying to decide between a lancer 2017 awd, a mazda 6 2017, or a jeep renegade 2017. I am comparing the gas mileage, and pricing, but I really don't know which car I should consider, since I live in a hilly town, and the snow seasons are brutal. I was thinking maybe the jeep, but I would like some opinions on either these car choices, or any others. please reply!
kenneth cepeda i think because of the awd the Lancer
So why do they have a 2.0 and a 2.4 in the same car? What's better? Huge demo sales on now for the 2.0 black edition and same price for 2.4 GSR. Thanks
AWD currently (lastly?) only available with the 2.4 which is the stronger engine of the two, unless you're looking at a Ralliart or EVO (both AWD) in which case the 2.0 is turbocharged up the wazoo. 148hp for the normal 2.0 and 168hp for the 2.4. I recently bought a "new" (5 whole clicks on the odo, plastic seals in place) 2017 lancer gts for 33% off the sticker price... eep.
@@jimgarrity2414 cheers brought the 2.4 GSR, 25 km on the clock. Had 4 to choose from.
I think it would be better if they made it cheaper and swapped out the CVT for something else. Too bad their deal fell through and couldn't get a Samsung Renault Nissan based car alternative. That would of made the cars a lot cheaper if they were made in Korea.
The only good things for the car is the optional 4WD, anything else look too bland. What would sell is their truck that I've seen selling oversea. Now that, I would buy one
Side profile looks like a vw jetta
I've been saying this for years "Shut the doors Mitsu".
Does it have an aux port????????? Does anyone know???
They don't have enough cash to compete with Mazda or Subaru who themselves don't have enough cast to compete with the big 4 Asian automakers (Hyundai, Toyota, Honda, Nissan). Mitsu was big overseas in the 80's and 90's when I was abroad. I saw alot of them on the road. Too bad I always liked them for some reason.
Herc Zeus mitsubishi builds car technology, the chasis from mazda 3 is a licensed version of lancer, the same for cx5 from the outlander sport/asx/rvr, lot of brands depend on mitsubishi to exists, so that's why mitsubishi is the most profitable car builder, they design and build everything, and even in the manufacturing process, they build parts for other car brands.
Mazda and Mitsu do not share platforms.
$24k for a compact car that came out in the Bush era is ridiculous. You can get a Civic for less and it'll have better looks, quality, reliability, and driving dynamics and up to date tech and driver assistance aides.
You honestly think anyone is paying 24k for this? I'm guessing the inevitable discounts put it well below 20.
plus it only gets 23 city and 30 highway! that's 8 mpg less in the city and 12 less on the highway than 2016 civic? the people who even get a great discount will end up paying alot more on gas!!!!
Kev erino True but the fact that Mitsubishi has the gall to think their relic is worth $24k while many up to date competition with more features undercut it is fascinating. Mitsubishi is truly lost I won't miss them when they're gone.
They are heavily discounted. No one pays 24k.
Civic isnt AWD...
Couldn't have said it better Steve; they either don't understand the US market or don't have the cash to inject life into their auto business and decided to funnel their capital elsewhere. It's truly a shame because cars like the 1998 Eclipse GSX was a nasty twin turbo sports car, same with 3000 GT VR4 and of course the Evolution. If they just gradually kept those cars up to date I swear they would be kicking Subaru in the teeth. Such a shame 😔
When you're comparing the gas mileage of the Lancer AWC to the Subaru Impreza, is it with the manual transmission or CVT?
Theo Morrow Theo, I was hoping that Steve, our resident expert reviewer would have the answer.
(However, I think you're right about Subaru's CVT fuel efficiency.)
Hi, Billy. CVT comparo.
Steve just provided the answer.
Billy Sou I get 24-30mpg with my 2.4 lancer
Kubz but 34-36 would be nicer numbers
I have a 2017 se lancer sedan, what type of gas should I use?
Regular
Buying and changing front bumper. Don't like the new front bumper look
i wonder if this car would make a good tuner, engine capacity and such.
Yes!
buildmorefarms100 why you say that? i dont mean looks and stuff, i mean the actual capacity of the engine im not sure what engine is in it, but i know it isnt the old evo engine.
albert puljos it is the 2.4 liter motor, it is very reliable and ready to tune.
It would be if they didn't stick a piece of shit CVT transmission in the car. Anyone that tries to tune a car with a CVT needs to be laughed at.
gmualum08 Speak to Honda, they use CVTs.
Bring back the 4g63T!
they still sell these? Mitsubishi is still around?
Where is the aux port?
It's no wonder Corolla and Civic sell so well when: you got competition like this, how can they not do well?
Theo Morrow
Well, at least they got a compact they can offer, FCA has none at this time, kind of incredible for a full line automaker not to offer one.
As you well know, Dodge messed up the Dart launch and they just were never able to catch up, cause even though it was much better than the one it replaced, it just wasn't good enough to make it.
Chrysler is such a mess in the reliability dept. I would choose a bicycle built by Mitsubishi over a Dodge any day of the week. I owned Chryslers. Awful experience. I had one Ford as well. I'll never do them again either. Only Asian automakers from now on.
The new corolla feels just as outdated as this lancer that's 10 years old, the lancer does at least have hydraulic steering going for it which is nice.
Is their a manual option?
Any major differences from the '16 to the '17 Lancer?
Not much, they did a refresh in 2016.
buildmorefarms100 They added 18" rims and the suspension from the GTS in 2017, which is discontinued for 2017, and automatic climate control and new stereo head unit on 2.4l awd models in 2017. 2016 had none of that.
Cant keep up with subaru styling anymore wtf.
Cool car
love lancer evo X
It's look Nice than dynamic shield design
a lot of people a bushing poor little mitsubishi .. im dissapointed of than ignorance of having this model close to 10 years!.. but instead of dying i just wish they could make a comeback but one can only hope. Plus.. i think there doing quite well on the International Market.. So Mitsu may Die on the states but Globally.. I dont think so
I dont care.. lancers are lancers. I'm getting this.
If this car goes for 500 hp I would buy this over a BMW M3, now it only runs under 200hp
lol
They need to make an evo again
yeah but it looks like a pretty nice simple all around car.
It’s name is Timmy Mcquack
Steve. I totally agree. Mitsu needs to hit the reset button. All of their cool cars have been axed. The i-Miev is a joke. Their small suvs are only okay but still aren't as nice as the much better ford/gm/toyota/honda/nissan/hyundai/kia compeitors.
how much in dollars ?
The 2015 model looks MUCH better
cool
its called the karuma
Good first car?
Drakkyy RS did you end up getting this car?
omg this car is awesome. lol
And they will sell 15 of them. Follow Isuzu and cut your losses.
And Suzuki as well.
Except that they have double digit % in sales increases every year since 2012. Small detail you overlooked.
buildmorefarms100 Its easy to have double digit sales increases when you only sell 1,000 units.
If last year I sold 10 thingamabobs and this year I sold 20 that is a 100% increase! I sound amazing! Mitsu in this country is dead, Now that Goshn has control maybe they will do something with it but in my mind they would be better taking the hybrid tech and Evo AWD system and closing its doors in the U.S.
SS S You're silly...and inaccurate.
buildmorefarms100 not really. These cars are fossils. Should be taken out back and shot right through the piston head
This is the reason mitsubishi is the cheapest Japanes car..
I don't can hablar ingles bat muy good
still stuck in 2007 design
Mitsubishi didn't even give it a proper facelift. Now that's sad.
(Same with the corolla though)
icantw8 the corolla didn't get a facelift they got one for 2015. They just have a revised lighting scheme and slightly different bumper because of the addition of all the technology. The lancer was supposed to be a total refresh. This is just pathetic. I feel ashamed for Mitsubishi
This same as evo
Only rental companies will buy this, a normal Joe will not even consider.
Untrue.
Yes true. For a 2017 car that was produced back in 2007...I mean, you have to be the most intelligent deprived MORON to even walk in the dealership for this car. Seriously. Might as well get the 2008 model for literally half the price.
icantw8 It attracted you to come watch the video.
buildmorefarms100 Im watching all sorts of videos to see if any compact car could match the 2016 Civic I just bought. To me, this video gave me a good laugh if anything.
icantw8 I checked out the new Civic, it felt cheap inside, I also didnt like the lack of volume knob, and the middle partition between the front seats is too high like a wall between you and your passenger.
Same old design from 10 years ago. It's time to let go Mitsubishi.
Mitsubishi should just leave the auto industry, they have nothing worth checking out in their lineup. Nothing.
I am looking into a G4 or Lancer ES. So there is still interest.
Yet you checked out this video of the Lancer?! I think maybe your actions are different than your words.
WretchedDrake I disagree. in terms of sport Vehicles, yes they lack variety and competition. However, the old first and second generation Outlanders and of course the Outlander Sport currently are one of the best Jack of all trade vehicles. Not the best in any particular category, but does a little bit of everything and does it pretty well. I love my little Outlander.
andrewesquivel the outlander is garbage. Sorry to say but they are Just s pile of outdated garbage with outdated motors that are over a decade old. The 2.4 is a 13 year old Chrysler motor and the 3 litre I don't even want to get into that. It's sad really.
WretchedDrake in my opinion, Mitsubishi isn't in the game to necessarily take honda or any other manufacturer out. Buying my 2017 Lancer ACW was one of the smartest, yet dumbest things I've ever done. Yeah, it's a super reliable car. It has great warranty. And the price is amazing too. Mine had a sticker price of $22k. After the incentive from Mitsubishi and my down payment, I really only financed a little less than $14k. And I'm 21 with subpar credit. They put their money where their mouth is with the warranty. Truly a fantastic car that I'm in love with.
Mass look
