Tony Northrup reviews the new Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 DG DN II Art lens, a great walking-around, travel and video/vlogging lens that gives you wide angle to moderate telephoto zoom, fast f/2.8 performance for great low-light images, with a lower price and light weight that makes it comfortable to carry around all day. - Наука
Me opening my YT feed: Sigma Sigma Sigma Sigma Sigma Sigma
sigma looks sharper, on 24mm not too much, but on 70mm very clear.. tony:"no significant difference"
Thank you for the helpful comparative review!
It's nice to see you and Tony out and about! Thanks for the great review. Unfortunately, I scratched the lens on my Sony 24-70 gm II (ouch) on a recent photo safari. This is a solid case in point for a filter (woulda coulda shoulda). I am not a pro, but a pretty good hobbyist. At any rate, the reviews from all my trusted RUclipsrs have convinced me not to spend the extra $1k on another Sony GM. I pre-ordered the Sigma. I'm pretty sure it will be everything I need it to be based on the glowing reviews.
Shush! Don't mention scratching the lens or all the anti-filter mob will jump on you for not pretending that no one needs a filter.
Thanks for the Review 💯
Outstanding review 👏
Thx for the great review Toni/Chelsea, yes Sigma has really been pushing this new 24-70 vs the 24-70 GM 2 , i went to the photo shop where i bought my A74 from and checked out both lenses from Sigma and Sony, even the old timer working there said, the Sigma id definitely cheaper and heavier than the Sony, its just not quite up to the G-Master lens and agreed with him after my comparison between them, I have severe bilateral carpal tunnel so i need to have something lite weight when shooting handheld and i found using the Sony i didn't have that issue, so I'll have enough in the fall and get the Sony , to me its just that touch better in the end for my uses 👍
Love the sound and this vibe
Are you guys going to cover the firmware update to the Sony A1?
Hey how do you all clean the defusion material on your softbox? 🤔
Hi Tony i am looking for mirrorless camera for family photo, but i want interchangeable lens, any recommendation pls.
thanks
Looks amazing, but I wonder if it is compact enough to trade my 28-70mm F2.8 by Sigma for. It's small and compact, but doesn't have 24mm. I primarily use the Tamron 35-150, but reach for the Sigma when I need a lighter setup.
Same question here
Compactness is not the job of an art lens.
Keep the 28-70 if you like it.
Thumbs up for Maven Filters! I recognized it by the color before you said it.
Those "missed the focus" shots looks like motion blur - sure you and Chelsea were steady enough to shoot at 1/125 at 70mm with Sony IBIS?
I thought I recognized the guy you showed the camera to at around 6:50. Was that Eugene?
Hello, if you a Lens Sony 24-105 F4 do you buy this New sigma's Lens?
Just got back from Japan, if you’re coming out this way hopefully you can do a meet and greet.
Good review...especially noticing the autofocus is not quite up to the level of the GM. I just got the A9iii, so I'll be passing on the Sigma.
Tony please work w Sigma on a fix for the autofocus issue. This is important.
UPDATE: Have you heard from Sigma regarding the autofocus issue? Was is a bad lens? Not final firmware? Hoping to hear good news. Thank you.
that was a good honest review👍
Hi we need comparison for the sigma 24-70 mark ii between sony 24-70 mark i and sigma 24-70 mark i and please no need to compare to tamron I don’t feel it compared anyway.
Both Sigma’s are better then the GM I. The Sigma 24-70 II has faster autofocus and is lighter but its image quality performs similar to the first version with some improvements
What kind of flash do yiu use? Link? Thanks
What are the difference from old Sigma 24-70 f2.8?
I own the old Sigma 24-70 F2.8. From reading and watching reviews, the new lens is slightly smaller, lighter, slightly sharper, faster focusing. Has the aperture dial added, probably has better WR so hopefully less prone to dust. My version has some dust in, not excessive and does not show in photos but it's there. I believe things like coma and loca are also better.
It's just a little better in every way.
The thing is the Mk1 is still a great lens and extremely sharp. So I don't see myself upgrading. The jump in performance is just not worth spending that money again and taking the hit on what I paid for the Mk1 selling. As the market is probably going to be flooded with Mk1s at a good discount soon.
If I were buying a 24-70 right now and didn't own one, yes I'd be getting the Mk2. I think Sony GM lenses are honestly a rip off.
What sells me most on the DG DN ll is the close up shot ability. I never was able to get around to getting the MK1 but im definitely making sure i get the new version.
Would you get rid of the MK I and get the MK II? Is there enough difference?
Sure!
what about the dust resistance ????
At Sigma 24 70 no1 was very easy to dust dots to came inside the glass, like ridiculous easy. Like , one walk at the park was enough..
Sigma said, ver.2 they have fixed dust issue
@@LeeXuan88 hope show ..time will tell !
cheers from Greece !!
xxoo tony ,I love ur HDR!!!
Buy this or for the 1200 buy 2 used in mint condition , sigma 35 1.4 and Sony 20 1.8
For portrait, you could go manual and use focus peaking, no?
You could grab pencil and sketch pad, no?
24-70 2.8 the best portrait lens?
Love my Sigma’s. Although my Sigma 70-200 2.8 is so heavy.
Have they fixed the dust issues of the MKI ?
Dust FEATURE of the MkI. It's like a FREE black promist, but bigger and more spotty.
Dust issue was fixed in later versions of MKI. If you have an issue with dust send it in, they will clean and replace the problematic seal.
I had a later version of the MKI, no dust issues.
If I didn't already have the Sony 24-70 GM II, I would probably buy the Sigma. Looks like a great lens for the price.
Maybe it is just me but, in every one of the examples that Tony showed, I favored the Sigma! And I definitely am upset at Sony for the bs fps limitation implemented by Sony! Great review T&C!
Interesting that the Gitzo tripod has basically all the same design elements of the 3LT travel tripod that was so unusable, like the twist lock legs and the 3 knob (including clamp) ball head!!! I personally use a Giottos travel tripod that is basically identical but swapped the receiver to a lever lock unit that is full arca/swiss compatible for lens mounts, L brackets etc that the old manfrotto cannot use. It seems like Sigma is still suffering from focus issues that they are kinda known for, shame. To me the 70mm on the Sigma looked a tad sharper...
the color spots of the star in the Washington Square Arch image are mostly caused by dust on the lens. Some lenses are more prone to this than others.
No, it's the sensor. It's the phase detect grid being shown. This is a known artefact at high Fstops shooting into harsh light/contrasting light conditions. It's the exact reason Panasonic argued they didn't want to use phase detect on their sensors for so many years.
@@thegeneral123 thank you for your response. So let's agree that it's not a lens problem... :-)
Best all around lens is the Tamron 35-150mm
Does the sigma 24-70 dn ii fit in the sony A6400?
Yes
Is it the Godox V1 Pro?
It's a Flashpoint.... Adorama's version of the Godox V1
Wow! Now make it z mount with the aperture ring Sigma.
I've got a Sigma 24-70 for Nikon, purchased 8 years ago. I have no complaints about the photo results, but the WEIGHT! I feel like I'm lugging around a lead brick.
Using it on dslr? Or miroless camera?
@@aleksandrtkachuk9286 Bought it for a DSLR, but now using it on my mirrorless Z6ii
Should have used it to capture milkyway shots and compared results with the sony lens its going up against. That's the genre where this kind of lens primarily excels at.
I’m really not crazy about the tapering towards the mount with Sigma. Feels like unnecessary addition of size and weight
After so many years Tonny still didn't learn how to shoot pixel shift. Tonny get a good tripod and good ballhead and practice ... ;) NY is stable enough.
Why is Chelsea doing the TikTok hold the lav mic technique?
2:07 - this isnt missed focus, thats motion blur dude... we saw you spin around like a crazy duck and 1/125th of a second at 70mm is just not enough when moving that much. And the flash did nothing to freeze motion, it just added a tiny amount of fill light and a catchlight for the eye.
Hey Tony, what's your backpack in this video?
the Simga i sharper :) its obvous at a 43 inch screen , 50 cm from the front .
24-70 is the perfect portrait lens?
lol, no
If you are going to shoot like a fool, how are you going to miss focus?
Great review! Comments: (1) Sigma color a little too warm to me. (2) Eye autofocus: Maybe a firmware update for the fix?
Just not a fan of the Sony image. Looks like an iPhone.
you Fujifilm and pentax looks like iPhone
Morning 🌄
So, sharpness and corners are a wash. Based more on the sample you buy. Sigma is much much worse at LOCA. Sigma has more distortion. Sony worse against bright light. Sony has better close up capability however. You did not take shots with the Sony at 70mm. Pick your poison. I already picked Sony
Im happy with my good old Tamron
SUCKS! design
