  • A long, long time ago in a thrift store far, far away I picked up some McDonald's Little Mermaid Gold Figures. I was able to get nearly all of them and thought they were amazing. So I had to pick up more. Will I get them all?

Absolutely. I remember when they had action figures for Bambi, the Disney movie, and Bambi's legs were articulated so he could lie down or theoretically sit but I think the proportions and lack of flexible torso made that awkward to impossible. But you could make it look like he was walking or running and let him rest for a bit! Also, I think Thumper's arms and/or legs moved too. Flower was super cute as well but I don't recall... lemmie look. *checks Google* OH YEAH. Bambi's head moved! 360 degrees but still impressive, so he could stare at the butterfly on his tail. So Bambi had 5 points of articulation! (I think his front legs moved at the same time but his back legs were individually mobile.) And no base so he could stand on his own. Thumper and Flower had four points of articulation and so did the owl. They were all super cute and looked like action figures you'd buy in a store in shell packaging. I loved them so much but I didn't take them with me when I moved out... super regret. They seem pretty cheap in a set on eBay though which is nice. Kinda surprising to me honestly!
That said, I think the reason they've gotten cheaper and shittier is that toys, in general, have gotten a lot more expensive and it's just not as cost-effective with inflation and the cost of a meal. Something as good as any of these would probably be $4-5 US dollars minimum these days whereas back then maybe they only cost $1-2 in a store?

I remember the avatar and the last airbender ones they had for when a movie came out... I had gotten the plastic fan toy and it worked really well... it had stickers on it to create a image and reminded me of the one air bending stick Aang had so he could fly. I would love to have that fan again along with some other Avatar and the last airbender ones if I could find it...

Kinda funny, I was teased as a child since I always called Sebastian Mr H lol
It´s probably painted with acrylic gold, and that has a habit of rubbing off if they didn´t prime the plastic right, AND storing them so they touch any kind of plastic, rubber, the paint WILL stick to that, so, if I were you, I would move Urusla so that she wont touch any of the others.
You could give them a touch up with either acrylic paint, ink or with an airbrush if you want them to look brand spanking new :) just remember to sand them lightly and maybe give them a coat of primer before you paint them 💜

The codes are batch numbers so they can track the toys in case of defects, etc. Is it possible that the golden painted figurines were painted to make them look rare or exclusive? A kid (or adult) could have faked them to complete their golden collection.
Edit: never mind about the gold paint comment I commented that before seeing your box set.

This is actually REALLY interesting, because these came out in 1997, but I actually have the Ariel, Eric, and Flounder from the 1989 set (my Ursula got lost to time) that I got in happy meals as a kid and the Ariel appears to be exactly the same cast. I don't know how the 1997 one differs, but the 1989 version, the tail is a softer plastic (all the same green color), and her upper body/hair is hollow because her gimmick was that she floated in the bath. Interestingly, the Eric is NOT the same. The original 1989 version he is sitting in a yellow boat, and he is holding Sebastian. Flounder sucked in water that could be squirted out and Ursula's gimmick was that she just had a suction cup and stuck to the wall.
Mostly just interesting to see that the Ariel is pretty much an exact recast of the original, as I wasn't aware McDonalds repeated any of the Disney toys. kinda cool. :D

Some of the older ones were not as good as some of the newer ones but most of the newer ones where worse than the older ones...
The older ones were more show accurate and actually had cool stuff like stands, color changing(in sunlight)tails that can be brushed, some stands that double as 2 combs, more details, and etc.
I do have a lot of My Little Pony still in the package which includes McDonald's toys... I have one McDonald's toy that I think isn't from the United States of America (where I live) by the way it is packaged in a slightly bigger bag than the ones in the U.S.A at the time....

This is so crazy! Yesterday I was going through boxes in my attic labeled "McDonald's toys" and found a ton of toys from the 90s. Three of which were the golden Ariel, the normal Sebastian, and the normal Flotsum and Jetsam ring. I also have the blow up Ursala that goes with the Flotsam and Jetsam ring, which helped explain why the Flotsam and Jetsam "bracelet" was so big, and in fact not a bracelet. It is such a weird coincidence that I found those (and had no idea they existed prior to yesterday) and now you are posting this! I did not know that there were golden versions of all of the toys, that is so interesting. My gold Ariel also had some green sections on her. I scrubbed her with a toothbrush and some dish soap and most of it came off. There is a section on her head/hair that got scratched somehow and the paint came off. The color underneath is basically just a white plastic. Her tail though has a green spot that would not come off. You may have noticed on yours that her upper half is hard plastic and the tail is more rubbery. I'm thinking that maybe that has something to do with the color difference? Also the code on mine is HK 56, which is completely different than both of yours 😂 I personally would love to have this set so I searched for it online, but all were somewhat expensive (for McDonald's toys) 🙈 Anyways thank you for sharing! I was once at a goodwill and someone had donated a bunch of old McDonalds toys. I ended up buying pooka and Bartok from Anastasia and a bunch of the furbies because I used to love them when I was little. That was one of my favorite thrift store finds.

I think the discoloration is from oxidation. The gold pigment used in the plastic probably has metals in it that oxidized from being in the water then dried over and over. Or they could just be green plastic

I have a vague memory of playing with a similar Sebastian toy. Though I don’t remember if it was gold or red. I just have a slight memory of laughing hysterically about him dancing.

  • @Princess-Daisy

I remember hearing about this special “golden” edition set a long time ago. Despite being a gigantic little mermaid fan, I’d def pass on this set only because 1) I don’t really like collecting McDonalds toys and 2) Even if I wanted them I’d rather have the normal colored versions just because movie accuracy reasons 😂 and most importantly 3) Water toys freak me out especially old ones. Idk why it’s just the fact of toys being put in the water freaks me out. It grosses me out and it’s partially why when I collect vintage items I use plastic gloves to handle them in case they were ever put it water
Also I’d love to see a restoration video on repairing some. Broken toys being fixed always interested me
P.S. I’m willing to bet the green discoloration is from water ware unfortunately.
Edit: okay maybe not entirely from water ware but at least somewhat. They most likely had to just do the models in whatever spare plastic they had around and color gold onto it and whether that be red or green it’s at least interesting
Edit 2: I did a little research and yes, Ariel was supposed to color change! From what I can see I think yours is stuck on the color changed mode. I also found out that the Ariel mold is reused from the first time mcdonalds made a little mermaid happy meal toy set. Also fun fact: in the original set Ariels gimmick was instead floating instead of color change.

i never realized how gross water toys are until you mentioned it. i've never collected used toys but i always wondered if they're washed? i assume if they're really old it would be worrisome to wash in case something like... peels off

    • @Princess-Daisy
      @Princess-Daisy 4 года назад +1

audrey o I tend to always try to wash my stuff when I get it home but if it’s something that is from like 1980 or before (or somethjng I know can rust ex. My little ponies) I just wipe it down with a sanitary wipe. Usually paint or stuff like that won’t peel off unless it’s really old and like wood. Dolls typically don’t peel (thank goodness!!)
In my experience, places such as thrift stores tend not to wash items before setting them out given the copious amounts of dust or weird gunk I find. Sometimes I wish I could figure out if the old owner washed it though. The only obvious signs for the most part is mold, rust, or occasionally washed out curls (which isn’t even a guarantee). I think also discoloration as well, but not all discoloration is from water play.

Are you sure that the green is not on the outside of the golden things? I have experienced that some copper and gold painted plastic things get green for the same reason that old copper roofs get green...

This was my thought - the metal in the paint used to paint them or cast them is probably getting a patina wherever it has contact with the air.

I also remember having a treasure chest kind of drawer with an Ariel figurine on top and a fork that could be hidden inside the drawer and a shark with a magnet on its snout that allowed it to "levitate" on a platform it came with, I guess those two were from another set.
