    Can someone tell me the difference/s between the Oberheim OB-8 and Oberheim OB-Xa? Those vintage machines both look very similar, but I'm not sure about the sound difference/s. Which one is 'better'? I had an opportunity to buy the Oberheim DX drum machine that belonged to _Huey Lewis and The News,_ but I didn't need any drums at the time, and they weren't using the more sophisticated DMX, just the DX, for some (?) reason.

    • @synthland4526
      @synthland4526 4 года назад +2

      The difference is in the voice chips. The obxa sounds more rough and unpolished like the obx. The ob8 came out later with a more stable and polished sound.
      OBX = most unstable but the best sounding of them all
      OBXA = more stable and warm sounding
      OB8 = most stable clean sounding and reliable.
      Cheers

    I had to watch this again and now really need to do the OBXa retrofit I've read about for my OB-8 that I bought last month. In fact, I think my OB-8 is in need of a tune-up all together.

    • @100DollarHeadache
      @100DollarHeadache 4 года назад

      What retrofit? Are you talking about the mod that restores the bass the 8 lost a little of compared to the Xa? I actually bought some perforated boards, and cut them to size so I could neatly assemble the parallel capacitor and resistors, rather than just tacking a capacitor and resistor on top of another resistor. I still have enough parts to make a few more sets of these.

    • @seanchristophersynthesizer6999
      @seanchristophersynthesizer6999 4 года назад

      @@100DollarHeadache Yes. I think I read about 3 or 4 things that is done to give the 8 a bit more "umph" in the bass like the Xa. I figured that since I had to get some work done on my OB-8 anyway it would be nice to have the tech do that mod.

  • @decemberagents1401
    @decemberagents1401 4 года назад

    • @mima85
      @mima85 4 года назад

      There's a mod that can be done to the OB-8 voice card's output stages that fixes this. After that the OB-8 still won't sound 100% like an OB-Xa because of other differences (different filter topology, VCO tuning algorithms, voice output's op-amp and OTAs, etc...), but it'll approach its predecessor nicely. And you can really feel the added oomph to the low-mids. I did that to my OB-8 and I'll never look back.

    This synth is incredible. I believe it this what Geddy Lee used on the Moving Pictures tour. If Oberheim/ Smith could make a modern version that sounds like this I would buy it in a sec. Unfortunately, I find the OB6 sounds half-asssed compared to this. Why can't they make a version that sounds good, like Dave Smith did with the Prophet 6? The Modal 008 seems to be the only modern analogue synth that really gets a growl

      Baloran The River has the true vintage sound but limited features. I think nowdays everyone Is cutting corners on components , even analog synth makers that charge
      a premium. I doubt they're using the same quality as the 1980's or 1970's on every part of the designs.

      The Abstrakt Instruments rack-mount VS-1 is going to be the ticket. It is actually possible that it will beat out a real OB-Xa (and I own an OB-Xa)… it's modeled after the OB-X, which is preferable to most synth folks (more discrete components on the the voice boards). It's gonna run ya $3,500- $4,000… but 40yr old OB-X units are $8K-$15K. The VS-1 should be available to purchase in October.

      @@mr.wizard9785 I'm in agreement. Setting aside macro geo-political and "pandemic" issues, the VS-1 becoming available in October should make for a very exciting time indeed. if you haven't listened to the demo you must, it REALLY is early 80s Oberheim poly synth sounding. Question... What made Oberheims sound sooooo thick in comparison to modern equivalents (prologues, prophets, obs, etc...)

    • @andyjones760
      @andyjones760 4 года назад +4

      To me it's imperfection, among other things. Small but audible differences between each voice, not only oscillator tuning but filter cut-off frequency, envelope times etc. Also voice panning makes a significant contribution to the OB-Xa sound, particularly when playing chords, or unison voices. Spreads the sound (more specifically, each voice, with it's own small variations) across the stereo field. This makes a big difference in comparison to a mono polysynth where everything is dead centre.
