The U.K. Offshore Power Boat circus held an event in my home town years ago (think F1 on the water) and they all turned up towing their very expensive race boats being fancy American 4X4s. In the week that they were there one of the local farmers made a fair bit of cash towing the boats and the tow cars out of the water. The usual failure was to reverse the boat trailer down the steep slipway into the water to recover the boat leaving the tow-car with its rear wheels just in the water. They would then floor the throttle, the four wheels would spin on the aptly named ‘slip’way and the car and trailer slid downhill into the water. Chris turned up in his Series 1 Land Rover and calmly pulled them out. What was strange was that the other drivers did not seem to learn anything from the experience, they seemed to think that full power was the only way. The most interesting thing about the whole week was that Donald Campbell’s daughter was one of the competitors.

Maybe one might be lucky. But a hydrolocked engine is almost certain pretty damaged (damaged valves, bent rods, things of that nature) so I don't think this BMW will ever run without a new or rebuilt engine. My knowledge of car mechanics is from the 1970's so I guess I'm out of date, but why are so many cars towed with the rear wheels locked? I guess it is in transmission lock, i.e. Park, but why? Is there some sort of Artificial Stupidity in modern transmissions that says if the engine ain't running it must go into Park regardless of what the driver wants?

Push button electric handbrakes which aren't easily released mechanically. Keep in mind too, electrical systems that aren't designed to get wet will do weird and unpredictable things when they do get wet.

I did it in a transit van many moons ago, (got called out in the middle of the night - no water gauge showing the depth though). Ended up with a bent conrod. The company decided on a new engine. As you say costs ££££££. I'd always assumed on a big van the air intake would quite high. 😂 It turned out it was no higher than the top of the wheels. Needless to say, over the years, the first thing I find out on any new car I've had is where the air intake is.
