  • Because of steep hills, tight curves and narrow streets, some routes continue to use short wheelbase four wheel trams called remodelados. The origins of these go back to the beginning of the 20th century. Successive rebuilds in the 1930s, 1950s and 1990s have used components from trams first delivered in 1901. Routes 12, 18, 25 & 28 use 4 wheel trams, route 15 uses modern low-floor articulated types. Route 28 has gradients as steep as 1:6.9, said to be the steepest adhesion street tramway in the world. Clearances between trams and parked vehicles can be measured in inches in some of the narrow streets. Lisbon is famous for ceramic tiles, many different patterns can be found decorating the buildings. Also included is an English Electric diesel loco shunting freight and a few shots of the Lisbon metro.
Route 12 - Praça Figueira to Praça Figueira (Alfama loop)
Route 15 - Praça Figueira to Algés (articulated trams)
Connects central Lisbon (Baixa) to the Belem district, the Lxfactory and the Santo Docks.
Route 18 - Cais Sodré to Cemitério Ajuda
This route heads into Ajuda district and passes the Palácio Nacional da Ajuda and the Jardim Botânico d' Ajuda gardens.
Route 28 - Martim Moniz to Campo Ourique (Prazeres)
This spectacular route passes through Graca and Alfama, it also connects Baixa to the Estrela district.

    Muito bom esse vídeo.
    Conheci 3 Lisboas, a dos anos 90, 2000-2010 e 2010-2020.
A primeira e a segunda tinham em conta os seus habitantes, a terceira é só turismo e estrangeiros endinheirados...

Cool retro video! This is amazing quality from a camera in 1997. I live in the USA, but I got family in Aveiro, Portugal. I been going to Portugal almost every year since I was born in 1989.

Wow! What a fantastic bit of archive footage and beautifully edited - compelling and engaging even though it doesn't have a presenter. I lived in Lisbon in 98 and 99-2000, so this really takes me back to my early 20's. It came up as a recommended video and I'm so glad it did. x

Is their any significance in what appears to be varying liveries on the same trams, and although the track looks as if it's in a bad state of repair I noticed they all seemed to ride smoothly for 4-wheelers. The articulated ones seemed to suffer from an abundance of "all over advertising", - I don't think I have seen so much on a tram of that length before, even the 4-wheelers appeared to favour a well known soft drink company. Do I take it their is no standard livery, although that little red 4-wheeler really looked nice, is that the beginning of yet another rebuild for them.? Excellent video really enjoyed it, as I do all of your 'foreign' ones.

The colour scheme for Lisbon trams in 1997 was and I believe still is yellow. This is sometimes partially obscured by advertising. The attractive red trams are part of the heritage fleet used for tourists. The Funiculars are now sadly disfigured by the curse of graffiti. I agree with you comment about the articulated vehicles, they look to me like giant slugs! During my visit large areas of track were being completely re-laid, down to foundation level.

Yes this 'Heritage Fleet' is sort of catching on over here now, what you rode on 4 or so years ago at 'normal fare' have been given a fresh coat of paint, - (and not much else), and they now charge the unsuspecting holiday makers 4 times the standard fare to ride on them. Nice to hear they are relaying track, I thought they were riding very smoothly for 4-wheelers, I find they usually are very prone to swaying easily.

Yes the official livery was and still is white and yellow, however during that time period up until I would say 2005 they went crazy on ads, I remember around 2000 it was impossible to spot an articulated tram without an ad on it as all of them were covered up with ads. Fortunately today it's not the case anymore despite the fact that most of the fleet still has ads on it.
Note: this is one of the best shots of the Lisbon underground from that time periode thanks.

I enjoyed riding on these trams but a word of warning. Beware of child pickpockets. I saw them at work with their mothers at each end of the tram.

Traffic looks a bit night-marish to me!!
