    For the same reason Temple plays at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
    So the city can claim college football. Plus, UNLV was a good soldier all those years out at Sam Boyd (a glorified high school stadium). They deserve some love.

    I live in Las Vegas. There is little Campus life atmosphere at UNLV. Most students are commuters. Sam Boyd is miles away from campus and has been abandoned. The only time UNLV draws is against BYU because there's a huge Mormon population in Las Vegas. Against Air Force because of Nellis Air Force base. And if they schedule teams like Wisconsin that have fans who travel well

    Better question is *WHY WOUDLNT THEY?* I went to UNLV when they played at Sam Boyd stadium. It was on the edge of town 30 minutes from campus (at least) with terrible traffic. Tailgates were fun but Its a dump and in the middle of nowhere. Who cares if they don't open the upper deck, The atmosphere at Sam Boyd was just as sad and empty only at Sam Boyd it was HOT AS FUCK. They play in a world class stadium close to campus. Allegiant is only a 2 miles from campus and has the strip right there total win for UNLV.

  • @Steve_Hunts96
    @Steve_Hunts96 Год назад +32

    I live in Vegas, and let me just say that the Rebels moving to Allegiant makes way more sense than staying at Sam Boyd, regardless of how the atmosphere turns out.
    1. it’s still incredibly hot in Vegas in September, usually not cooling off into fall temperatures (60-70° is fall here) until later October, and so the enclosed stadium really helps to create a more comfortable environment for the games to be played in.
    2. Allegiant Stadium is MUCH closer to the UNLV campus than Sam Boyd is, not to mention in a more central location for the Las Vegas valley to make it easier for people to go to these games.
    3. UNLV playing in Allegiant is no different than Temple playing at Lincoln Financial Field, Georgia State playing at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Cincinnati University Bearcats playing in Paycore Stadium, and I think there’s a school that plays at Nissan Stadium in Nashville (Tennessee State maybe?), and once upon a time San Diego State played in Qualcomm Stadium when both the Chargers AND PADRES played there, so the Rebels playing at Allegiant, sharing a venue with an NFL team, is not unusual for college football, and clearly, as you’ve seen with Cincinnati & San Diego, you can still produce strong college football teams and create strong college football atmospheres in these venues. UNLV hasn’t gotten there yet because they only recently moved into Allegiant, and are still trying to build themselves up in the new home. From what I’ve been able to tell since they’ve moved into the new stadium, while the crowds have been scarce, the location (proximity to campus & city location), stadium type, and field they play on, are boosting their recruiting, and overtime the team will get better, which will in turn improve the atmosphere inside the stadium on game days.
    I will say though that UNLV hasn’t been the best sports University though, as despite the years of Jerry Tarkanian coaching the Running Rebels basketball team to the 1990 National Championship, the school has very rarely had a team win anything of significance in any sport, and I’ve also heard rumors here that the administration doesn’t actually care all that much about their ENTIRE athletic department (which is downright disgraceful if true given that’s a major income source for the University). If they can get their act together with athletics, the school would find themselves on the sports map across the board given what Las Vegas has turned into over the years with sports in general, and would be a big draw both locally and nationally.
    The Vegas Golden Knights RAPIDLY pulled that off, and are idolized in this city, are a big time national draw, and have demonstrated an elite level of organizational operation. UNLV has the potential to do that here, they just have to actually do it with their entire athletics department.

    • @PredatorKingdom
      @PredatorKingdom Год назад +3

      I agree and UTSA has done a nice job of filling up the Alamodome, so it can be done, but UNLV is better off playing at Allegiant than hot and ugly Sam Boyd. Vegas has proved itself to be a pretty good sports town as they should have all four of the major sports populated in their city. If they can make their program a lot more competitive they can fill up Allegiant pretty easily to at least 60% capacity. UTSA is a brand new program as of the past decade and they play at the Alamodome another professional stadium and they fill it up pretty well. They keep competitive teams and UNLV needs to adopt that bluprint, they need a new athletic director to takeover who really cares about the program.

    • @S_Over_Street
      @S_Over_Street Год назад +1

      with Las Vegas already becoming a new sports hotbed (NHL & NFL currently & MLB & NBA coming soon) you’d think that UNLV would capitalize on this & how much it would generate their revenue. If they were smart enough they’d hire school officials to hire the right people & get UNLV a place for student athletes to build up their program.

    Long before the Raiders became involved, the plan was for a much smaller new domed stadium for UNLV and every possible location they looked at were also the same locations the Raiders looked at after they became involved. Sam Boyd Stadium wasn’t even as good as Fertitta Field that belong to Bishop Gorman High School. It was time for something new.
    Also the upper tier is blocked off and tickets are not sold for it. Crowds are small but they are not 90% empty. Convenient pictures you used that are all pre game where everyone is out drinking inside the stadium in the club area or other concession areas.

    Sam Boyd was absolute trash as no Vegas team should be playing in that outdoor heat as they should never move back there. Sam Boyd was empty too and it looked even worse because it hot and ugly. Moving into beautiful Allegiant Stadium was the right move as their fans don't have to worry about weather. I like it when college teams play in NFL stadiums, but the only bad thing is that most of these schools aren't big schools, so they don't fill those stadiums unless they got a big opponent coming in like Temple had a few years ago when Penn State had a big night game against them. I wish the Minnesota Gophers never built their stadium, so they could've moved into US Bank Stadium as one of the few college teams that would've played in an NFL stadium that would've had it filled up. I think if UNLV was a better team they could get it 60% filled as they need some bigger opponents to come in. If they can still maybe build their own domed stadium with 40,000 capacity that would be great for the program.

    The UNLV situation is much more nuanced. Sam Boyd is on the far east side of Vegas and nowhere near the Campus, so it never made much sense. Although it's not fancy it wasn't a bad venue. Allegiant is down the street from the Campus. The other issue is the quality of the teams. UNLV football is just really bad, they're not ever competitive. It's fine to lose, it's different when you're constantly getting blown out. Last year they started 4-1 with some close games so they were showing hope. But then got blown out 40 something to 7 in the next couple of games and went on to lose like 6 in a row. No one is going to pay to see that. They can't ever seem to recruit a QB that can throw, I honestly don't know why they don't just use an Option Offense like Army / Navy does. At least that way they wouldn't get completely destroyed every week. It wouldn't be so bad and the probably could at least fill the lower bowl if they just fielded a quality team.

Pitt and The Steelers share and Temple and the Eagles do to. It makes too much sense for city collages and those close to share. I loved Pitt Stadium when I went there. But it was not in great shape In its place they built The Pete for basketball and other things. Yes we lost the feel an playing on campus. But it was hell walking up "cardiac hill" Now they just stand at the right spots and a shuttle picks them up for a drive less than 5 miles.

    Sam Boyd used to host the Monster jam world finals from 2000 to 2018 or 2019 I think which is why one side of the stadium is open cause the trucks would start from outside the stadium and then speed down the sides down to the other end of the stadium and do a hook and finish with a dirt ramp, and that style was cause las Vegas style j racing cause of it being at Sam boyed. Now the MJ world finals take place where ever they choose due to Sam boyed being vacant of UNLV.

    As a side note, in addition to UNLV & the Raiders, I see Allegiant Stadium as also being home to an MLS expansion team for two reasons. One is that the roof would allow matches to be played during the afternoon during the summer instead of waiting until the late evening when the temperatures go down to play. The other is that Allegiant is already built for soccer in addition to football & there would be no need to build a soccer specific stadium. Allegiant in its short history has already proven it can be a great soccer stadium as it has hosted a Gold Cup final between the US & Mexico & multiple preseason matches involving European clubs like Man United, Chelsea & Barcelona to name a few. I am sure that an MLS team would easily outdraw UNLV in my view & for those who think an MLS team would not draw well, they could tarp off the seats in the upper deck to make the atmosphere more intimate for soccer.

    UNLV football is not in a power conference, and they get mediocre recruits. Having them play at Allegiant was supposedly an attraction for new recruits, but even the most talented local high school players would rather play at UCLA, USC, etc. Sam Boyd Stadium is way off campus, and the tickets for UNLV games can still be well over 100 dollars for watching a team that should only cost 20 dollars or less to watch. UNLV has always been a commuter school since it became a university in the 60s. I grew up in Vegas in the late 70s and 80s and they had one dorm at the time. The University of Nevada is in Reno and is 150 years old next year. UNLV, which was previously Nevada Southern, has always had issues with community engagement, and the NFL and proposed sports pro teams will likely exacerbate that trend. I loved the old football field at Sam Boyd where the yard line graphics were done like the roulette wheel in red and black. Can't do that at Raiders stadium I suspect.

    I’d say 70% is empty though since UNLV football averaged 20k fans last season and the max capacity is 65k. They only sell tickets for the lower bowl which seats 30k I think so it actually doesn’t look all that bad especially when you’re at a game in person.
    Since Las Vegas is a transient city, some people don’t live here too long which affects trying to attract the casual fan. Even then the casual fan only cares if you’re good which UNLV football hasn’t been historically.
    Generally, Vegas sports fans only care if you win. Since UNLV is the only university in town there is a lot of alums in town but they have only known UNLV football as a losing program which makes it hard for them to buy in to the program either.
    Last season they started out (4-1) and people were interested and started to show up. I think there are many UNLV fans in the city but they are hesitant that its the same old UNLV football and don’t want to show up and get their hopes up. I think if they were to truly become good at football for once you’ll see Allegiant stadium fill up for UNLV games.

They're not empty like you're describing and the reason they play there is obvious...they are trying to become better at recruitment and Sam Boyd was comparable to a JUCO stadium. I guess I'm wondering where you're from, cause it'd be odd to just make a video on why SDSU plays at snapdragon (or previously Qualcomm with the Chargers) but simultaneously lack all nuance and insight you'd gain from actually going to a game or being a local. In the new world of college football super-conferences, someone is going to have to raise the question about whether all current teams can and should continue to field a team. Justification will be needed. And I don't know if UNLV will be able to make their case.

      Actually you're super wrong about UTSA, although it's not a sellout per say every game it fills up pretty nicely to 60-75% capacity and it's still a newer program with a lot of early success. It looks way better than UNLV on gamedays, go back and watch their games, it fills up nicely. I think in due time they may think about getting a new facility, but they don't need it honestly.

    • @ReisterJP
      @ReisterJP Год назад

      I assume the Alamo dome seats about 55k 60% and only hit 75% (when UTEP played there). 60% of 55k is only 32k or so. That is not good! That is almost half empty. UTEP can sell out their stadium, and UTEP is a gatekeeper. 50,000 people haven't packed the alamodome for UTSA since their opening game a decade ago, but nobody UTEP did it in 2022.

    • @PredatorKingdom
      @PredatorKingdom Год назад

      @@ReisterJP Over 30k for a new football program is not bad at all, this isn't some blue bloods school that's been around for 100 years or more. UTEP is close to San Antonio, so of course they'd bring in more people. A lot of times attendance is associated with who the opponents are coming in. UTEP looks pretty full on TV most of the time and they had packed houses for their important late season games and conference championship games as well. Just because they're not hitting 50k or more regularly doesn't mean they won't get there eventually. It's still a newer football program in a non-power of 5 conference. If they had Texas, Oklahoma, or LSU coming in, it'd be a lot different.

    If I were UNLV I would've stayed at Sam Boyd and used that money they are spending to rent Allegiant to make revisions to Boyd. In 2023 college football you gotta have your own stadium. Miami playing at Hard Rock doesn't have the same feel (on t.v.) as playing at the Orange Bowl. Even though it's not close to campus, neither in the Rose Bowl for UCLA but the atmosphere there (on t.v) screams college football. For Allegiant Stadium it makes sense because they are basically filling dates and making money off of UNLV.

I just hope there will be a team that will buy Sam boyd stadium. Hopefully they can remodel lies it or something.
