I used to deliver pizza in upland and listened to starflyer the entire time. I never would have thought they had ever heard of or been anywhere near there.
Ever stumble upon a band and think to yourself I could've used this years ago lol well I just found Starflyer through an all under heaven cover of Only She Knows going through this Starflyer discog these past fews days has been amazing
I do wish I’d gotten into their other stuff more back then. I listened to a bit of Gold when it first came out back when I was in 8th grade and didn’t care for it. Then Americana came out, and I really liked it and bought it (It’s still my favorite of theirs), but for some reason, it took me about 15 years to finally check out the stuff they did after that and get into their first two albums.
@@crescentfreshbret A buddy tried to get me into them in high school but I never ended up listening to their 3 shoegazier albums. A decade later I rediscovered them and must have listened to silver daily for at least month straight
I’m kinda dating myself here (sorry- I’m old) but I started listening to this band back in 1995. I recall when the Jason Martin predicted that the music trend would swing back towards the metal genre. So- he wanted the next Starflyer 59 album to sound more metal…❤😮
YES! I saw Starflyer 59 that same year, in Phoenix Arizona. A pretty girl named Kate told me about the concert, and I saw several friends there. I think she may have been a liaison for Tooth & Nail Records for the Phoenix area. It was a fantastic evening and I got to talk with Jason after the show. Very humble guy. I was already into bands like Lush and Kitchens of Distinction, but I didn't know the term "shoegaze" until I think Kate mentioned it. I had a crush on her and ended up choosing Kate as my daughter's middle name. I wish life was like a VCR and just re-experience that night, but this video is the next best thing. Thanks for the fantastic upload and the surge of great memories! I'd even written about that night in my journal from back then and recently re-read what I'd written.
@@JasonCoffman I remember when I was in bands in the 90s and someone would record us in a gig. It sounded amazing, those mics are condenser mics, and it's my guess later footage was cheaper hand head cams, around 98 or so, when the mic wasn't that good.
@@JasonCoffman Thanks so much for uploading this, what an era. Seeing the comments from people who were at this show and remember the quirk about the venue caving to allow the distortion is just incredible.
I was at this show. I remember hearing the Taylor faculty wouldn't let them use distorted guitar, but then caved mid-set and let them crank it up. That's what I heard at the time anyway.
i was at this show too! I remember the same thing about distortion. it was going to be too loud but then they did it anyway. Wasn't it in the cafeteria??
They wouldn’t allow them to have distortion on their guitars?! Why in the world would you even allow a show to be played there, at all? These guys are so mellow! Back when I was in a band- this would have constituted a “deal breaker“ and the guys would have walked! Those are the typical kind of musicians that I had to constantly work with… 😖😢💔🚫
I am sure it was true. I saw the 77s there in '96, same venue, the Taylor Dinning Commons, a big room with different layers, one end made a nice small venue. When the 7s arrived they found out Taylor had promoted it as an "acoustic cafe." This was the era of "Unplugged" everything. Mike Roe came on stage and said something like - "They wanted us to be acoustic, but we're not doing it" and they proceeded to rock at full tilt. That a similar thing would happen to Starlfyer a year earlier, in a similar set up would not surprise me at all.
I’ve always loved that sweater of Jason’s. There were a few promotional photos with him wearing it back in those days. I’d love to have one of my own, but I don’t think it would look as good on me (it goes well with his dark hair, and my hair’s not dark).
I saw them play, I want to say Americana era, he wasn’t playing that fender then he had some sort of Gibson amp. But I used to have a long sleeve shirt like that! I also had a FORD logo Starflyer 59 shirt.
Didn’t see the in-between bits on the video, but was this when Wayne was speaking French between songs and introducing the next track? Like “blah. Blah blah blah blah blah. Housewife love song” ?
I wish I could play my guitar with it up so high! It’s fine during practice but- when I get on stage? I can’t figure out where the heck my fingers are- at all! I always lower it all the way down to my knees… then- I’m good not to stare at the frets anymore 😅❤
Haha! He probably has a certain channel that he keeps his distortion pedal on that also cuts down on the feedback. If only there was such a thing IRL ❤😂
@@JasonCoffman Well, you were an inspiration to me back in the day. What you did with Tape Records made anything seem possible to me. I ended up working for Plankeye, initially as a roadie and then eventually a guitarist, then started my own band and produced some demos for some others. I tried creating my own record label (unsuccessfully) and discovered a lot of great music and made a lot of friends along the way, many of whom I'm still close to. I got to work for Starflyer 59 doing live production a couple times as well. Jason Martin put up with a lot of wide-eyed fan-boy adoration from me. I got to know some of my heroes like Morella's Forest, Chris Colbert, and Gene Eugene and even got to hang out at the Green Room studio and see a few records get recorded. It was an exciting time. And there is a lot of music I would never have discovered if not for your influence. Anyway, fanboy stuff aside, I hope you are doing well. Let me know if you are ever in or near Olympia, WA. 🤘

His tone is so metallic and abrasive here. Almost reminds me of Steve Albini's Shellac guitar tone.
yeah, exactly what i thought. clang for days
I’m surprised they never recorded an album with Albini. It seems like all the cool Christian bands in the late 90’s and early 2000’s did.
Good point! It does seem like it…❤
One of my all time favorite bands, so underrated. Would love to see them live
Me, too! I just saw that they released a new album back in 2021! Maybe- they’re going to tour soon 🤞❤
This is probably the best sounding live recording of them I've heard.
It really is unbelievable how good this sounds when it's literally just the sound from the VHS camcorder's built-in microphone!

Yeah I definitely agree on this, so hard for engineers to get the mix right with their unique sound

Can’t get enuf of silver lately, this is perfect!
Also at 35:43 Wayne's warcry is too hilarious and even made Jason grinning wide!
First time I saw Starflyer - the cloth is over the microphone because the mic kept shocking Jason.
that hurts when it happens, mine does that in my usb modular.
Like George Harrison during the Get Back sessions.
Gotta make sure those stage mics are properly grounded. People have been killed when that wasn’t the case.
Thank you for posting this. Takes me back. Good times 🤘
Thnx for uploading it’s so good to hear their live sound done well, especially when the distortion kicks in.
Pretty cool to hear the mello version of this song played live.

Reminds me of the days when Brownlabel was the only source to see taped live performances like this.

I wish they did the full coda of Zenith. It’s a top tier shoegaze moment.
This is awesome
The pizza dough microphone bit is beautiful.

One of the most under rated bands.
THANK YOU Nick Rochford n sam hyde for recommending this band!!!

Yes, he was doing that at all the shows. I think there's still a line or two of it in there, and definitely some in the other shows I posted.
Yeah, that was Wayne's schtick back then. I assume that is where the idea for the French in the song Le Vainqueur originates from.

Could Jason’s guitar be any lower?
I just can’t play properly with it slung that low. I wear mine way up in my armpit like they did back in the 50’s and 60’s.

The Americana line up was so sick...somehow add Jeff Cloud and they conquer the world while Driver 8 open up....coulda woulda shoulda............. :(

What's the feedback pedal and how?!
Haha! He probably has a certain channel that he keeps his distortion pedal on that also cuts down on the feedback. If only there was such a thing IRL ❤😂
There's no feedback pedal, but a rainbow machine can be one if you're loud enough. That's just normal feedback my man
Best band ever. Probably their worst performance ever. 😂
