Wonder if there is any political will in Italy to replace some of those marble panels that were stripped off the buildings in the Forum? Would certainly draw more Euros into Rome. Hadrian's Villa could certainly use such a retrofit too.
There have been plenty of efforts to reconstruct ancient monuments. Unfortunately they tend to express more about the desire of the reconstructor's contemporary motives than they reveal about the original structure. There have also been those who have found value in the ruin itself. @@smarthistory-art-history Reconstruction of the classical period hasn't stopped the present day Greeks from reconstructing their lost ruins. I suspect the Italians are, simply put, lazy and apathetic. "The glory that was Rome is of another day"
This is largely because we were recording outside in the Forum beside one of the busiest streets in Rome. We don't have the resources for a professional audio technician and just use a small handheld zoom mic/recorder. A sound studio would certainly improve the audio quality but we think we would lose too much not by recording on site.
I really love your videos, have you both ever thought about doing some sort of podcast? I could listen to you two talk about art & history all day! :)
That 's a truly excellent idea!
This was 7 years ago..are you people still alive?

Of course they are. Are you half dead?
So beautiful, I hope one day modern architecture can be as aspiring as the classical periods.
You need to get out more, then.

Modern architecture pales in comparison to the classical period. You must be blind or suffer from bad taste.
Thx guys, you explained the purpose of this ginormous thing that I've just recently seen with my eyes.

@@smarthistory-art-history Thanks very much. All three videos - but in particular the second - address my query.

AND re-erct Constantine's statue. He belongs back in place.
Any artist renderings of what the basilica looked like from the outside, also within its context in the forum?
This is so trivial, but Constantine's face made me laugh... 🙊 His bust reminded me of a Family Guy character and I couldn't hold it together.
Great informative video!
Very intresting
Audio levels, please. Your videos are very well researched and intelligent but the audio levels make it not so easy to hear.
