- Capt Kirk informs Spock the relieve Commodore Matt Decker of command under his personal authority and command of the Enterprise.
Commodore Matt Decker played by William Windom.
“Not with *my* ship, you don’t!”
One of my favorite lines from Kirk. You can hear his indignation.
Amazingly, William Windom essentially considered this role as side work and didn’t give a flying fuck, as he thought it was a silly sci-fi show that wasn’t going anywhere. Ironically, his portrayal of Commodore Decker is one of the superlative performances of the entire Star Trek franchise.
His body language was spot on....."Down here!!"..... and in the command chair shifting away from Spock
Windom, Shatner, and Nimoy all gave outstanding performances here.
he's bog average nothing special
One of the great aspects of this is how Spock knew Decker was out of his mind but didn't take any action against him. That is ... until Kirk gave the order. In other words, he respected Kirk's order more than Star Fleet regulations
"You mean you're the lunatic that's responsible for almost destroying my ship?!"
Lol
He puts the computer cards down like they're playing cards and he's throwing in a lost poker hand after accusing Spock of bluffing.
To do well at poker though, one does need to occasionally bluff. Spock would not do well at poker. Chess, on the other hand….
My dad and I used to recite this scene and I always played Spock lol 😆
Ok, I’ll be Scotty😂
@geofffwilliams4478:
Wow, that is a fine memory, I only played such things with my mates at school 🏫
I was usually Captain Kirk
@carminemurray6624 🤣 even when we played Poker and he thought I was bluffing, I always said, "Vulcans never bluff." 🤣
@@geoffwilliams4478 no as Commodore Decker said, I don’t suppose you do.
Cool
Nerves of steel. Spock doesn’t even flinch.
Shatner, Nimoy and Windom. The Golden Age of Television.
Superb
That guy played Seth Haslett on murder she wrote?
By God this is my favorite star trek episode. The transporter scene was fan freaking tastic.
It is the best. Kirk and Spock
The acting is superb. A standard seldom matched in television drama.
Commodore Decker fondling the computer disc = Commander Queeg and his steel ball bearings.
It's moments like this when you realize Spock isn't just a cultural icon because people love the concept of Vulcans... It's also because, no matter how emotionless Spock claims to be, his loyalty to Kirk is unwavering.
Such a great scene. One of the best episodes.
I love the power move by Spock by ordering Decker to the medical bay at the end
Hands down the best episode.
He should have sent two security officers. Like Kirk, Decker can defeat one guy. In "Mirror, Mirror" Spock had two guards manhandle the alternate Kirk to the brig.
The red shirt held his own & was a “tough out!” 🤔
Commodore, I believe you're scheduled with the ship's barber for a shave. Mr. Montgomery, you'll escort Commodore Decker to the beauty parlor.
McCoy and Spock couldn't stop Commodore Decker from assuming command when they knew he was wrong, but Captain Kirk ordering it on his personal authority as Captain of the Enterprise was enough to get the job done.
"A starship also runs on loyalty - to one man, and nothing could replace it, or him." -Mr. Spock to Captain Kirk in "The Ultimate Computer" just before Commodore Wesley gives his regards to "Captain Dunsel."
Starfleet would have sided with Kirk and Spock because the Commodre was emotionally compromised and deliberately put lives of the crew in danger. According to regulations as depicted in the 2009 film that Spock from the future said, if the captain is emotionally comprised he is declared unfit to command and immediately relieved of said command.
@@MiketheNostalgicGamer We never saw it come to that, so we won't know will we? The point was that Doctor McCoy didn't have the evidence at the time, so Spock couldn't back him up.
As Mr. Spock said in "The Tholian Web:" "I need not explain my rationale to you or to any other member of this crew. There is a margin of variation in any experiment." He's referring to judgement of command. So from Spock's perspective, Decker as an experienced captain could be correct in his priority. Spock also didn't see Decker on the edge of a breakdown.
But there was a precedent: Scotty in the previous season's episode challenged Ambassador Fox's orders to lower the screens.
"I can have you sent to a penal colony for this!"
"That you can, sir, but I won't lower the screens."
It gave everyone a way out.
Spock could easily refused Decker. He was in shock and unable to command
Decker: I outrank you!
Spock: It is due to my respect for your rank that I'm ordering you to give up the chair instead of nerve pinching you and yeeting your unconscious body across the bridge.
0:43, Kirk was expecting to chew out Spock for reckless but instead goes ham on Decker. My favorite part of this scene.
I imagine Kirk was more confused than angry, as from his perspective the actions taken by the Enterprise were highly illogical.
I love the power fight between Decker and Kirk in this scene... NOT WITH MY SHIP YOU DON'T!!!.....🤣
This is one of the best scenes in the entire series.
Those regulations need to be updated to include lunatic captains who just went through traumatic experiences before the hold any new positions.
They were during Enterprise so they must have removed it. Archer was relieved of command there once because the chief medical officer concluded he wasn't sane and fit for duty.
This is how you deal with those who abuse their authority and put lives and well-being of others at risk!
And then there's how Worf deals with Gowron. 🤣
Notice how Decker if fidgeting the yellow cards in his hand, similar to Captain Queeg from the novel The Caine Mutiny.
I'd like to run that line by my doctor sometime: "I don't recognize your authority to " relieve" me!"
My gosh this is great acting (and writing). William Windom's superb performance here harkens back well to Humphrey Bogart in the Caine Mutiny (even fiddling with the disks), although with even more tension. I wish Hollywood (and the UK) would write intelligent, adult characters and scenes like this more often, with less pandering to the fashions of the day.
Spock is wearing an actual airpod prototype in this episode
The gold of Command is heavy, too heavy for most people❤️Nice one, Mr.Spock.
This episode was like watching a mini blockbuster movie!
This was brilliant!
" Vulcans never bluff."
" No. No, I don't suppose that they do."
A pointed and veiled insult to Spock about his mixed heritage.
I don't think so. More of an acknowledgement that, no, Spock was NOT bluffing.
Kirk showed he knew regulations as well as Decker by using his personal authority as Captain
Poor Mr. Montgomery didn't know the old Commodore still had game.
My favorite scene from TOS.
My favorite scene in all of TOS. Bar none.
Did Decker actually think he could fuck with Spock? Lol.
He did a few scenes ago when he confronted Spock with regulations giving the Commodore the authority to take command, and Spock backed down.
Everything about this episode was first class, including a superior communications officer.
That's Lieutenant Palmer. I love her reaction @1:48 when Spock relieves Decker of command! ❤
@@MiloDC I totally agree. Elizabeth Rogers delivers a perfectly nuanced performance as Lt. Palmer, combining shock in Spock's action with resolve, loyalty, and pride, all in a single expression. I can watch that scene over and over.
Lt. Palmer marked her spot in Star Trek history. She stands with her crew.
I still get chills re-watching this.
That scene is awesome on so many levels
People love to say the word "Commodore" in this scene.
Too bad they got rid of the rank of "Commodore." It would have been good for Kirk to be promoted to that rank, so he could still command a starship.
Decker knew that once Kirk used his personal authority as captain he was finished
Get my ship out of there. Give command back to Mr . Spock. Not with my ship you don’t! Kirk says . Spock absolutely says Vulcans never bluff!
Spock could have stopped Decker from assuming command....but he REALLY COULD HAVE after his behavior after he did assume command....He simply could have done it and ordered Decker to the Sick Bay for a complete examination. And apparently in that time, they could really analyze the brain activity....and see if he had cracked up..... And then McCoy would have covered for Spock's action by determining Decker was "ill" and unfit for command. Let Starfleet sort it out....if they survived.
DR MCOY: SPOCK!! Do something??!!!!
"Vulcans never bluff."
Vulcans do not bluff
Too bad Nichelle Nichols isn't in this one. Lieutenant Palmer had more dialog than "Hailing frequencies are open" and gives several emotional looks to the command staff.
Uhura was still recovering from the NOMAD attack.
Palmer was better than Uhura in every way. Pity she wasn't the permanent officer at communications.
She did an outstanding job. Her body language was better than dialogue.
I wish the band playing that great mood music were visible on the bridge.
Captain Kirk won't let a lunatic destroy the enterprise no matter what his rank
They say _The Wrath of Khan_ was based on "The Deadly Years," "Space Seed" and "Balance of Terror," but note Spock's damage report seems almost identical to the ship's status in "The Wrath of Khan." 1:11
I always thought that the Security types would have tossed him out easily after the pounding the ship had just gone through. LOL. Follow Spock. YEA!!!
Mr. Spock… what else can you say. Ordered and a mission commander.
That was the Best Episode ever made of the Star Trek Series , " THE DOOMSDAY MACHINE " !!!
It was top-notch, with an original score and cues used in successive episodes. Plus a space battle.
However, many people feel "The City on the Edge of Forever" was the best as it won a Hugo award. And of course many fans and casual viewers loved "The Trouble with Tribbles."
It is my all time favorite episode ever.
If you are in command Commodore Decker it's ur responsibility to appear presentable before your crew.. So comb ur hair and get a shave lol
Real Trek!
I'd tell Decker where to gp-!!
Commodore Decker. Your Relived of Command. U tell him Spock.
That earpiece Spock is wearing looks uncomfortable.
They should have given Decker a sedative and put him to bed. That might have solved a whole bunch of problems. Instead they shot him up with space meth and just beamed him over. And they wonder why he killed himself...
Damn ..So Great !!! No offense to TNG ,Deep Space Nine or Voyager but the Story telling on TOS was 10 times more Compelling #KirkSpockRulez
The future 😊
They fixed the squeaky door in the next generation
Only one spock.
Why is he calling Decker by his first name?
👍👍
"Donald Trump, you are relieved of command. Report to KFC bay."
"Donald Trump, you are reinstated as we wish to be rid of consumer prices up 17 percent since Biden took office. Food is up 20 percent, rent is up 19, utilities are up 24.. Senile Joe Biden ...Report to sickbay for a lobotomy."
