Thank you for the supply tip (video)! I was able to buy 3 cans + 2 spouts, current prices are a bit higher than when you bought them at 44.50 per can, but still half the local price.
The time reference for those curious about stock - Ordered on 2022.07.07, they shipped out on July8 and arrived at my house in the US on the 13th. They had Green and Black 20L in stock, no Red except for the smaller volumes.

I bought a couple of Midwest Jerry cans at Harbor Freight. They, too, were made by Valpro of Latvia. The difference is in the opening. Obviously, mine has the civilian neck.
When I got mine, I applied some bedliner to the bottom. They'll never get scratched and rusted.👍

I'm another person who benefited from your research. Thanks for taking the time to share it. It's been close to 2 years since you posted this and the prices on these have gone up quite a bit, but this is still a better deal than anything I could find from the U.S. I had an absolutely great experience buying from Simply Bearings. I was going to get a 20L, which they had in either Green or Black- these were $45. Then I saw that that they have the 10L ones in Red, for not much more than half the price- $24. To me that was an better deal. Not only do I prefer Red for storing Gasoline (because I have occasionally run into gas stations that will not allow you to pump gasoline into anything other than a red container) and I find the 10 L ones to be much more useful. They are easier to move around, are much more stable to resisting tipping over, great to keep in the back of cars/trucks, and you can open and use them without exposing as much stored gas to air (moisture). You are also getting much more value, because if you look at the price of these cans here in the USA, one 10 L can is almost as expensive as one 20 L can. To get two of the 10L for almost the same price as a 20L is a great deal. Shipping was quite reasonable- about $25 for the two cans with a spout too. What really blew my mind was how quickly I got them. I ordered on Sunday night and had them in my hands on Thur, and I had selected the cheaper of two available shipping options! As far as the quality of the cans: Yes, they are clearly identical to Wavians (of which I have many). Wish I had learned about this dealer earlier. Thanks again!

Hey Wilfred. Thanks for the detailed and thoughtful reply. I agree with everything you've said and I can tell you're a man that values a well built and designed product. They have us a bit over a barrel here in the USA with bloated pricing on Wavian cans. You'd think they were gold lined. I'm also going to pick up some 5L and 10L cans from Simply Bearings for general use. Thanks again for the reply!

    • @WilfredForbert
      @WilfredForbert 2 года назад +1

@@marcusthompson7417 You're welcome. The other thing I should have mentioned is how buying larger numbers of these can brings down the price. Those Red 10L ones have a special low price, and they do not give any discount for buying larger numbers of them, but the number you get has a considerable effect on shipping price. As you buy more, the shipping increases, but in very non-linear amounts. This is because they are based on weight. Obviously, if you add more cans, you get greater weight, but there are weight tiers that include a range of number of cans. If you happen to be buying the lowest number in that tier, you will pay the same shipping as you would if you got the largest number in that tier, so cost per can goes down to a point, then shoots back up again with more. For example, for the 10 L cans you can pay anywhere from $4.25 a can to as much $19.68 a can (all standard shipping). They had 56 of those cans in stock, and buying all 56 would not give you the cheapest price per can. That would cost you $6.71 a can. To get the lowest price ($4.25 per can) The magic number is 17 cans! For the 20 L cans, 11 is that magic number. That will get you a shipping charge of $6.58 per 20 L can. Simply Bearings also gives discounts for buying more cans (other than that steeply discounted Red 10L), so you can consider that as well.

    • @marcusthompson7417
      @marcusthompson7417 2 года назад

@@WilfredForbert Seems you and I share the same mindset. If I had a reason to need 17, I'd surely buy to get that cost as low as possible. I suppose one could buy in bulk and just sell on ebay for way less than retail and still come out way ahead, but that's a lot of trouble. I can say that the 4 20L cans I ordered made it across the pound safe and "sound as a pound." They arrived in suitable sturdy boxes and were separated from each other inside the box with cardboard.

I used to have a WWII Jerry can, and it had a screw cap and spout which isn't EPA rated today, but it also had to withstand the pressure buildup when full of fuel. The can weighed more than the gas it contained, and I was glad when someone finally stole it! LOL, they left the spout behind, and without it, it is a gas spilling tank!

It's not the can, it's the spout. Damn the EPA. It's called a Jerry can because the British first encountered them in North Africa in WWII, they found these captured German cans much superior to their own cans. The Brits referred to the Krauts as Jerry. The Limeys referred to their can as the 'flimsy'.

I don't want them rusting when gas is store in them. After googling around, I see there are products to coat the inside of gas tanks (Red-Kote, Por-15, KBS & others). Does anyone have any recommendations?

Good information on jerry cans. If you have a lot of problems with power outages, why didn't you convert your generators to propane or natural gas (whichever you use in your furnace)? Most gasoline motors have kits to convert them to one or the other, and you can just hook them to your furnace supply. That is what they do with the larger backup generators intended for house power outages.

That number is not a nato number, it's the UN certificate for the can design.
All containers approved for transport of dangerous liquids should have one. Never buy a fuel can that doe snot have one.
D could be the country that issued the certification, in this case, Germany.
There are currently 2 manufacturers of proper jerrycans, Valpro in Latvia and Gelg in Poland.
While both are excellent, Valpro ones ar emade of thicker metal (0.9mm for Valpro, 0.8mm for Gelg), beefier welds on the handles, and better spouts(felxible tip or entirely flexible, vented, with integrated filter and with a convenient clip for storage on the can).
They can be found under they own brand, under distributor brands (Wavian, ALM, Auto+, Oxid7, etc) or unbranded.
They can be found with inner coating or uncoated (choice is yours, does not make a huge difference tbh), depending on distributor. To be sure you are buying Valpro-made can, check the code on the handle ends in "VP".
For Gelg, I do not know if they sell under other (or no) brands, but their certificate number is embossed on the side of the can.

Likewise, in Australia they're branded as Pro Quip jerry cans and they're also considerably less expensive. Like all things, us Americans get fleeced because they can get away with it. These cans were around $50 a can but then add $30 a quart for Red Kote and time to get a proper coat on the inside of the can and it pretty much negates any savings and you still have a less than perfect can. The French cans were all ugly and dirty on the outside but 3 of them were immaculate on the inside.. Either they were never used or re-coated on the inside. They were $27 each from sportmans guide.. They don't work with my Wavian spouts though, I just plan on transferring the fuel using a super siphon. Here's the response that I received from Simply Bearings Support about the can NOT have the internal coating.
Thank you for your recent order and for your feedback on the goods and services received.
Please accept my apologies that these goods do not fully meet the expected standard. We are surprised to hear that the cans are not as expected as they are Valpro cans, manufactured for UK distribution under license by ALM.
I have contacted Valpro who have confirmed that a batch produced in late spring was produced without internal coating. They have advised that this was done in response to the production issues that were caused due to the steel shortage experienced at the start of the year which resulted in the fuel cans being unavailable for a long period of time. By making the decision not to coat the internal face, they were able to reduce production time and thereby make stock available to us.
Valpro has further reiterated and assured me that for the storage of fuel and oil-based products, this coating is not necessary and its absence will not have any detrimental effect on the life span or capabilities of the can.
We believe these rust spots may have been caused by the presence of moisture in the can during storage and shipping.
I apologise for any inconvenience caused and trust these will still serve you well.

Can you confirm if the internal portion of the can is coated or just bare steel.

They've held up perfectly and as expected. bit.ly/3eIwtIO
They're 100% genuine "Wavian" jerry cans with a different badge. Wavian and all it's mirror image brands (e.g. Valpro) are all made in the same factory in Latvia with the exact same specifications. I haven't had to use the fuel in them yet for my generators, but I have for the lawn mower and the interior lining is top notch. I'll be passing these down to my 2 year old. I HIGHLY recommend.
I'm about to order a 10L and 5L for my lawn equipment (regular and oil mix). The 20L variety that I have in the video are currently £24.75 ($34.84) so they've only gone up by a couple of bucks, but that's only due to the exchange rate fluctuation. Shipping should be about the same, but what I paid ($43.48) was based on four 20L jerry cans along with a spout shipped to Arkansas.
Hope that helps and let me know if you order and how they turn out. Cheers.

Don’t think people understand jerry can price.. I’ll explain.. if you found cheap jerrycans for under a hundred it’s because they’re brand new.. people who knows don’t like brand new jerrycans.. vintage cans that have ware and tear with few dents along with quality build is why they are expensive… people that mount shiny jerry cans on their trucks and Jeeps looks terrible.

Huh, you'd think the U.K., being industrialized and developed earlier than the U.S., would have the larger "first-world" markup.
Also, I understand the need to make fuel cans inconspicuous, but I think a good thief would be aware of how damn much a good jerrycan costs, which is often more than the value of the fuel inside.

Man, I found this great video 2 weeks too late - bought the high priced Wavians. I'll be telling my family about these, though.
Great idea about the coating. How is it applied? Looks like you got a really nice application with a straight margin. I do have the red cans, though. Does the flex seal come in fire engine red, also? I've never used it and am not much of a handyman.
Have you done similar research on gasoline preservatives? Everybody has a favorite, but no hard scientific evidence on what works and what doesn't. There does seem to be a consensus that high octane ethanol-free gas stored in airtight metal cans with minimal air as you demonstrate, has the best shelf life before adding a stabilizer from what I can tell.
I did subscribe, but then noticed your videos are mostly family related, so no offense but will unsub.
Thanks for this great information, though!
    ATB!

I use the PRI-G product as it's super concentrate and very highly rated/recommended. I just used 10 gallons of gas I treated back in Oct 2020 in my car and it performed perfectly.
As far as the coating on the bottom, it's just Flex Seal in the aerosol can. I'm not sure about colors but you can get competitor products in different colors. One thing I can say is Flex Seal is not solvent friendly, that is gasoline will dissolve it so there's probably a better product out there anyways.
