Great video. I was going to go with the HF Jerry Can, until I saw the plastic spout and screw on top. I need mine for traveling on road trips, so durability and a locking metal gas cap is a must. I believe once you buy one Wavian Jerry can, you will feel better about the money spent on it.
I have had two of these Midwest / Valpro cans for the past three years and I have found that they are very well-made. I did have leaking problems with the CARB spouts, and recently, one of the caps did split. I just purchased the grey caps and I am going to use them in conjuction with non-CARB spouts. These have been hovering at around the $45.00 until recently at my local HF. I just checked and they are now up to $59.95. I am not surprized at all because of the war in Ukraine. Currently, Waivian cans are going for $89.99 on their website with an included spout and free shipping. Not too bad.
The going rate was $90 before the colonial pipeline shutdown, and I've just started seeing them available at that price again. Still seems like way too much for a gas can.
@@jprohrer I agree with you. 90 is too much. i thought 40 was too much, but im glad i did back then. so reliable and durable. and the cam lid really works. i use one of those clear hoses with the 'ball" at one end to transfer the fuel where needed. i bought mine at a range rover parts webstore out of new jersey.

Interesting. I have 6 of the wavians and want to continue adding to my fuel storage. I considered these, but I figured it’s a no-brainer why they’re less than half the price without the locking cam lid. Definite weak point is the plastic lid with pressure build up. However, using my wavians for vehicle transport and having an air conditioned garage in which these would be stored with limited abuse, I may be able to make these work. Have you found the added lids to be durable and not allow any fumes to escape?
can the Midwest Jerry Can be stored on their flat side without spilling? I'm thinking of mounting to my roof rack but it sits too high on its base and edges. i rather lay it flat but im worried about leaks
I haven't had any leaks using the grey lids and the seals that come with them. Not sure how much altitude gain they would stand up to, you would probably want to keep an eye on that.
I looked at some of these, but have got 10 Midwest cans w the same spout. I’ve modded the spout to be better, but I decided to just go for the Wavian. The $ you save on the van you’ll spend on another spout, so $160 later I’ve got 2 Wavian dsl cans on order. Once they get here I’ll decide if I like em or not.
Edit: I’ve looked at these Midwest cans in person, & after using my Wavian cans a bunch, I can say that spending the extra $ for the all metal design is well worth it. They come w a stock crappy safety spout design, but can be easily modded w some clear plastic tubing to have the same affect as the flex head spouts from Wavian that are $25 each! 6ft of the clear plastic tubing is $10 at Homedepot, & if u cut it into 2-1/2’ sections it works just as well for Diesel. On the other hand for Gasoline I wouldn’t use the plastic tubing for it. The steel cab is worth it for a Dsl, not for the gas IMO.
great vid, i can tell you i'm quite surprised these are made by the same makers as the overpriced Wavian cans. I've been using HDPE scepter military cans but i may pick up two of these during a HF sale. thanks
I purchase two of these cans from Harbor Freight. The white insert screen was removed in the video. I found this filter created issues with filling the can from a gas pump. It tended to cause spillage unless one is very careful moderating the flow into the can. I was unable to remove mine without force so I left them in. Did yours come out easily? Also, did HF have the grey gas cap or were they purchased elsewhere. Thanks
I pretty much had to crush the white screen with pliers to get it out, although the second batch of cans I got didn't have the screen. The caps are from EZ-Pour, not Harbor Freight. There is a link to them in the video description.
Two MidWest Jerry Cans (tractor supply) and one set of Gray Caps have been ordered ! Q: Does the nozzle fit inside the can when using the gray caps? i,e does it close AND do they catch enough threads ? Thanks for sharing !
I have the Harbor Freight one on the back of my work van. When I pulled the cap off of the can to use the fuel the rubber cap gasket was deteriorated and leaked when fuel splashed while driving. The can was in the vehicle for 4 months before I used it. Those caps are freaking junk and would benefit greatly from a quality cap alternative.
It is held in by two angled tabs, one on each side of the plastic screen. I slid a screwdriver between the side of the screen and the neck of the can and used that to collapse the screen enough for the tabs to slide through the neck, and then pulled it out with pliers. The screen got pretty mangled doing this.
The gray caps are not deeper, however since they are solid there is no need to stack the red plug inside the cap when storing the spout inside the can, so in practice the solid gray cap is able to get one more thread engaged compared to the stock cap when storing the spout inside the can.
Metal will rust if the inside coating fails. Metal will also conduct an electrical charge, ie a spark? aluminum wont cause a spark but it can still conduct electricity. Plastic is inert, but will not standup to extended time in the sunshine. I like the plastic cans on my boat which I use in the ocean (saltwater is highly corrosive with steel).
I have bought the cam type spigot, and I will need to buy a flexible metal spout for it. These plastic spouts mandated by DOT are ridiculous -- You have to push in and keep pressure on the plastic spout in order to let the gas flow through. I have found that mechanism to be dodgy and unreliable, often causing more spillage than a simple capped spout would have. It is awkward enough to have to hold a 40lb cannister at an angle while pouring, but then having to push down hard on the can from behind/top and engage the plastic hook on the edge of something while making sure it doesn't have too much shear force that makes it jam, is bureaucracy at its worst, making something simple safe and working into a Rube Goldberg contraption that fails when most needed.
My original cap broke, so I'm going to get the grey cap replacements. Since the cap broke, the spout won't work anymore correct? What spout are you using for pouring?
I'm still using the stock spout, but an alternative is the ez-pour spouts as long as you order the grey base cap with them: ezpourspout.com/product/gray-base-cap/

You do not have to hold the red button down, just press it once each time before pouring gas. The black hook on the side of the spout needs to hook onto the side of the filler neck to keep the valve in the spout open while pouring.
Yes, you have to push in and keep pressure on the plastic spout in order to let the gas flow through. As far as durability and long fuel storage, metal is much better. Metal will rust inside if not treated. The Wavian/Nato cans are treated inside to prevent rusting. The outside is powder coated.

The fuel container requirements are set by the EPA, not CARB. It doesn't matter what state you live in, they are all you can legally purchase for fuel transport/storage.
@@jprohrer The EPA standards for fuel cans ARE CARB standards. California pioneered these standards. A few states followed CA's lead. Then the EPA effectively adopted the CARB standard nationally. The workaround is to purchase used pre-ban NATO cans. These are far less costly than new Wavian 50 state compliant cans.

Watch the video on the history video of the Jerry can and all the reasons are laid out. Many things I never considered.
With proper care, a NATO can will last at least your lifetime. The gaskets in the lid and pour spout will need to be replaced when they crack. Plastic cans leak. They off gas, and breakdown if not stored in darkness.
I can tell you he didnt pay a penny for anything he shows
Who really cares what wranglerstar reviews?

Don’t buy C.A.R.B. jerry can unless you live in the Republic of Kalifornia. Buy real fuel can. 🤦🏼
Drill a 1/ 8 hole in the top and the new cans will work fine you will vent a tiny bit to the atmosphere but mush less than you spill with the environmental cans lol
@@howardsutton3502 Gas vapor is highly flammable. A hole in the can that cannot be capped is a dangerous idea.
If you want to eliminate the glug on one of these Harbor Freight cans, drill a hole in the hump behind the handle, and install a shrader valve stem there. Remove the valve itself, and use a metal cap. Of course, your modified can will no longer be DOT or EPA compliant.
