Great video as always, I think it's the first video I've seen about Cascara. And congrats on reaching and exceeding the 5k subs :)
Wasn't aware about the "cascara" name origin. If you're interested in languages...
In my language (Maltese) "to peal" is "qaxxar" (don't bother trying to pronounce it, but if you do it's close to how it's pronounced in Arabic). If you had to check the older Maltese language, the "xx" was often written as "sc", and "c" instead of "q"... which is probably the influence of Latin. That is why in Arabic (as well as in Maltese) it starts with a "q". So if you had to change those two it would become "cashar". An interesting fact, Maltese is also the only semitic language written in Latin alphabet.
Also, if you translate the word "cáscara" (in Spanish), it literally means "shell" (as in, the outer shell of a fruit). While Spanish is a Romantic language, and not semitic like Maltese, it also seems to have been influenced by Arabic for around 7 centuries. In other European languages it seems to be a completely different word.
Thank you very much for watching and all the interesting etymological informations.
Never knew about Cascara. If you haven't done already, you should try adding Chicory root powder while brewing coffee. Chicory coffee (cafe du monde) is kind of well known in southern US states. I like it with steamed milk. Taste pretty unique. I prefer earthy, woody flavors over fruity, floral. Chicory fits in that department.
Thank you for the info. I think we drank a lot of that in Poland as a kids. Wondering if it is still around. Will look into that.
For the powder one i would made a recipe like Turkish coffee to try it!
Thx. Would make sense.
@@mycoffeeshow111yes. And if you try it “Turkish style,” please update us.
Looks enjoyable!
Second channel; My Cascara Show???
Thx. I think I have enough of YT for now 😛
James Hoffmann talks about cascara in a couple of his oldest RUclips videos. One was for a cascara chocolate recipe and another for a video about it being illegal in the UK or EU at that time and how it was no longer to be sold. Something to do with regulatory issues around it being defined as a “waste product” and not “food,” if I remember correctly but I watched those videos around 2 years ago, so my memory of them is suspect.
That said, we don’t have this problem here in Canada. In fact Rogue Wave Roasters in Edmonton sells a Nicaraguan cascara (no mention of varietal) for $6CAD for 30g or $18 for 100g. It’s quite a bit lighter than the one you showed. A blend of light, golden brown to chestnut. The recipe on the back calls for an 8-10 minute steep of 10g in 280g of water. Or, for a more intense, syrupy drink, boil the water with the cascara for 10-15 minutes.
I didn’t pay too much attention, as James didn’t go into much detail of it as a tea, other than (I think) saying it was pleasant. Your more detailed look into it as a brewable beverage has peaked my interest. We go to Edmonton a few times a year and are due to do so at the end of March so I will definitely pick some up and give it a try. Thanks Jack!
Thx for watching and all the info. Interesting. It was very difficult to source it here. I just thought it is not popular.
I liked that cascara so much that I bought few different ones from Europe. As with coffee, not every cascara tastes great. If you buy cheap stuff, you might be disappointed. Someone recommended that I should get cascara and coffee beans from the same harvest and see if I can find some similarly in tasting notes.
@@mycoffeeshow111 well, when I go to Edmonton, in 5-6 weeks, I will definitely get some and report back here. I can’t say if it’s easy to find here as I haven’t searched for it. I just know that this one roaster does carry it.
@@coreycannon4511 thx and please keep me posted.
great video mate, just a heads up your music parts come in a lot louder than when you are speaking
Thx for watching. My fault, should have lower the volume down a bit.
@@mycoffeeshow111 is only a tiny detail :)
