  • Kiska, a killer whale at Marineland and the last captive orca in Canada - who has swam alone in her tank for more than a decade - has died.
    The Ontario government said Marineland, a theme park in Niagara Falls, Ont., informed the province Thursday of her death.
    The province had Animal Welfare Service officers at the park Friday as Marineland performed a necropsy on the animal, a spokesperson for the Ministry of the Solicitor General said.
    The park told the Niagara Falls Review that the killer whale’s health declined recently “despite intensive interventions by her caregivers, Marineland’s veterinarian team, and international veterinarians with expertise in supporting the health and well-being of cetaceans.”
    Global's Ahmar Khan reports on Kiska's tragic death.

    I think Kiska gave up and chose to die. I don't blame her. Human greed is disgusting. It's because of us that she died alone in a prison, without the comfort of a pod. Glad she's free of her prison now, though she never should have been imprisoned to begin with.

It's like you being locked up in a room by yourself for 12 years, never again seeing the faces or hearing the voices of your own species or be hugged or seeing them but every so often, a bunch of aliens come to feed you and give you a scratch and then leave you to walk circles in your little room. The tank used by Marineland of Canada for Kiska was an estimated 40 metres (130 ft) x 20 metres (66 ft) wide. Kiska would complete 879 laps around her tank every day which was a total distance of about 100 km, the minimum distance most wild orca pods travel daily. Kiska developed ritualistic, repetitive behaviours (such as repeatedly rubbing her skin against the tank until injured, thrashing, and floating motionless in one spot) that indicate stress and are abnormal for wild orcas. She live a life that was unfair and humans were selfish for taking her away from her pod and the oceans. Thank god Canada has put a stop to whales and dolphins in captivity so none will ever live that life again in Canada. Now China needs a reality check.

      I loved a zoo that was mainly rescues and former pets. I got so mad at hearing a worker from another zoo say our animals should be put down because they were injured or former pets. It was so infuriating.
      They took in wolf hybrids that couldn't be adopted and had many three legged animals on display. The birds that weren't exotic pets were blind or couldn't fly, but got to be comfortable and acommodated.
      I knew a few people with disabilities that were happy to see animals "like them" just living their lives as best as they could.

      Not that I think that this will do anything to change your mind, but
      1) there are a lot of privacy laws, especially given that's he's a minor, so they can't really say much about what truly happened. Guaranteed that student has a longer list of offenses that we don't know about.
      2) he was literally just arrested AGAIN for protesting at a drag show, and providing extremely misleading facts about it.
      3) he was suspended for openly protesting trans rights and that was why he was issued a 20 day suspension. He was able to return to class with a set of conditions, that he promptly refused. One of them was to not "deadname" trans students, which means referring to them by their name from birth and not by their chosen name. Their chosen name, which is on their LEGAL documents. Which he refused. In fact, he asked for a NICKNAME to call the students in question so he didn't have to refer to them by their chosen name.
      4) he was arrested for TRESPASSING when he tried to return to school before his suspension was up. Not because of his beliefs.
      5) the more hate these people spread, the more likely it is for those trans students to experience violence. Forcing them to use a bathroom that this male happens to share, creates an incredibly unsafe environment for the trans students.
      6) the schools policy is to create a learning environment where each student has the right to feel safe
      7) he is entitled to his beliefs. What he is NOT entitled to do is to deadname students, otherwise bully them, and protest for their erasure. Hatred breeds violence. How is any trans student supposed to feel safe in a school with him, and the 30 other people that support him? He is out there advocating for "his rights" by erasing the rights of trans people and their right to exist without harassment, bullying, etc. The human rights code clearly states that trans persons have the right to use the bathroom of their lived identity.
      8) he's nothing but some pompous far right kid advocating for erasure of trans persons, erasure of female reproductive rights, and so on.
      He is not the victim here. He has created an unsafe space where kids fear him, when they have the right to go to school and not be afraid. Trans persons are killed every year, and trans suicide rates are climbing. And the school was exercising their right to create an environment that is safe for its students by suspending this kid and giving conditions for his return.
      All the far right people do is listen to whatever other far right people have to say and copy their beliefs. It's literally just a bunch of copies of the same person. And their goal is to make sure vulnerable populations have their rights revoked. That is wholly inethical and it shouldn't be allowed to continue. Their hatred for vulnerable communities is loud and clear, and dangerous. All the left is trying to do is help people keep their rights AND safety as free Canadians. Hatred has no place in the classroom, in the community, or in politics.
      So what are my final points?
      He is not a victim
      He is a person full of hate with intent to infringe on others' rights.
      He was arrested for trespassing
      He refused to return to school under their guidelines.
      He doesn't want anything but the removal of rights from innocent populations who are just trying to live their life.
      Have your beliefs all you want. The minute you start to harm others or shove your beliefs onto them by removing their rights to their own body? You deserve to be punished. And punished harshly.
      Words have consequences. Actions have consequences.
      And they also have the power to affect people so harshly that the result is violence and/or death. And that is and should be stopped. Say they're soft, say he's not physically harming them so there's nothing wrong, say whatever you want. But words and actions have power. And if creating an unsafe environment means people are physically or mentally attacked, or die, that is and should be punishable. Same way you can't tell someone online to go kill themselves.

If we complained for being isolated two years, and felt depressed, lonely, imagine a killer whale in that tank for 40 years, separated from their calves, when they are social, live in pods almost 60 or more years, and its a group or species where matriarchy predominates.
    Sometimes it is necessary for an animal to die, in order to stop having captives orcas.

    How can Marine land justify this 'iron mask' destiny for a whale that was so gentle ???
    Will some animal rights association sue Marineland ?

    • @aazhie
      @aazhie Год назад

      Orcas aren't always gentle. But neither are humans. It's okay to say orcas are pretty and effective hunters. We shouldn't have to pretend they are Saints to ban isolating and torturing them!
      They belong in the wild, and we shouldn't judge them by human standards of morality. Humans don't need to kill or capture whales. Especially industrial human using powered ships.

    • @craven5328

      I don't think release was really possible. They released Keiko back in the early 2000s, and he subsequently died.
      From Wikipedia:
      Most sources conclude that the project to free Keiko was a failure because the orca failed to adapt to life in the wild.
      In Norway, Keiko had little contact with other orcas and was not fishing; for months before his death, the whale was being fed daily.
      He never integrated into a wild pod ... and could not break his need for human contact.
      Reasons cited for Keiko's failure to adapt include his early age at capture, the long history of captivity, prolonged lack of contact with conspecifics and strong bonds with humans.
      It's a terribly tragedy. Once she had been in captivity for so long, she was effectively doomed.

    • @aazhie
      @aazhie Год назад +2

      Sadly, they never learned how to be wild. They probably are avoided by other orcas because they have no social skills or hunting abilities. They simply die sad and lonely no matter where they are.
      I'm not sure if it would be better to have a quick painful death in the wild after a year, or a slow, less dangerous unraveling. Both sound awful and tragic.

    • @jeebus2313
      @jeebus2313 Год назад

      Unfortunately, even if that was an option, she likely wouldn't have survived long in the wild. Releasing animals that were raised in captivity into the wild is rarely if ever a good idea because they aren't adapted to living on their own.

    Jesus went up to Jerusalem. And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting:
    15 And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables;
    16 And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise.

    I understand that the laws are created to protect the orcas, ultimately. However, I don’t understand why she could not be moved, if not twisty pan, which would be ideal, at least to a facility, like See World, or even better, perhaps have brought Lolita to live with Kiska, she would’ve had more room, and I believe they are both from The same original population of wild orcas. At least you wouldn’t have been alone.

    How can we allow this to happen. These beautiful creatures don’t belong to us. They’re not here for our entertainment. The Desiderata says “You are a child of the universe. No less than the trees and the stars, you have a right to be here…..”. Kiska was a child of the universe. She had a right to live the life she was created to live but we took that away from her. Why? We share this world with other species., it’s doesn’t belong to us any more than it belongs to them. I only pray that Kiska will not have died in vain…. God bless her…
