I read the book 'Lavengro' at school in the 70's, I never thought I'd ever end up living here in Norwich though, and yes, the description is so very accurate!
@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich one book I was lucky to find was 'the siege of Norwich castle' by MM Blake, printed in 1893 and I found a signed copy in the old big C shop that used to be on castle meadow.

When Parson James Woodforde first visited Norwich in 1775, before taking up his living at Weston Longville, he wrote in his diary (later published as "The Diary of a Country Parson):- "We took a walk over the City in the morning, and we both agreed that it was the finest City in England by far, in the center of it is a high Hill and on that a prodigious large old Castle almost perfect and forms a compleat square, round it is a fine Terrass Walk which commands the whole City. There are in the City 36 noble Churches mostly built with flint, besides many meeting Houses of divers sorts. A noble River runs almost thro the Center of the City. The City walls are also very perfect and all round the City but where the River is. On the Hills round the City stand many Wind Mills about a dozen, to be seen from Castle Mount."
@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich Thanks. It's a quote I like very much, and sums up many aspects of C18 Norwich. Do you know how many of the signs are still in position? There was one near the Martineau Lane roundabout, and there seemed to be one on every major approach to Norwich when I was a boy.

I noticed his words "Thrice 12 churches" I always grew up from the 50's being told we had a church for each week of the year (and a pub for each day). Were there less back then or was this just wrong?
Love these videos, but just a slight moan, are you able to tone down the background music please? As it's very difficult for us with hearing loss to pick out your commentary. Thank you.
Thanks for your comment Steve, and I appreciate what you say. It's something that has been said a few times before, and I hope my more recent videos are an improvement, though it can be difficult to achieve a perfect balance. It is possible to get (fairly accurate) sub-titles in youtube settings, though that would take something away from the visuals. Incidentally my next video, tomorrow, doesn't have my voice as I feel it would be superfluous in this instance - so I apologise in advance for the music!
@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich thanks for getting back to me. No need to apologise, I wouldn't even know where to start to make a video! Keep up the great work. 👍

I think Mr Borrow was guilty of an underestimate. Or, because he was so fond of the city from the east, maybe he didn't count any in the west!
