I died laughing at that story you told at 17:06. One of the funniest concert stories I’ve ever heard from you! Thanks for the upload, Doc!
Opening act for Rush Hollywood Sportatorium 3.17.1983 was Jon Butcher Axis
I enjoyed this episode, love hearing stories like this 🤘
Speak of the devil tour was winter 83 , US festival was may 29th 1983 Heavy metal day.
Saw many concerts at the Sporto back in the days. My first show there was Vandenberg opening up for Ozzy Osbourne in 1983. If I can recall, security was very strict letting you in with any cameras, or recording devices. If you got caught with it, they would hold it up for you at one of the side booths until the concert was over. In addition, security would go around checking everyone's proper seating, especially on the front row, and all of the floor seats. I'm surprised you snuck in, and got a front seat for Van Halen, which was a nearly impossible mission to accomplish at the time, in such a huge venue. Cheers!
The Vandenberg song you’re thinking of is Burning Heart
Loving these stories Doc! Thanks again!
Glad you like them!
Loves these videos. Can’t wait until 84’ with another mighty VH show.
Opening act for that AC/DC Hollywood Sportatorium 1982 concert was Midnight Flyer
Yep, same for the Lakeland Civic Center on the 29th. But I have to say I don't remember anything about that band, they didn't have me going out the next day to buy an album by them like I did when I saw RIOT open for SABBATH.
If I remember correctly acdc played 2 shows there for those about to rock about 6 or 8 months apart and ya the 🔔 what memories huh what I liked was camping out for tickets at peaches
Love these stories Ralph! We’re close to the same age, so I remember going to a lot of these same shows in the eighties. Our “Sportatorium” was a similar looking place in Dayton Ohio called Hara Arena. The difference was most of the hard rock/metal shows were general admission. We used to get to the arena in the afternoon and party in the parking lot so we could get in line early. Once they opened the doors it was a mad rush to stake out our spot close to the stage. Amazing they allowed this since this was after the Who concert tragedy and just an hour south of Cincinnati. I think those of us who were young when the “quaalude and alcohol” option was available are lucky we survived. 😂🤘🏼
PS: Saw the Def Leppard/Krokus tour but Gary Moore also opened. Moore kicked ass live!
Those were the days!
Yelling "OZZY!" at a kiss show 😂😂
I love these, Doc. Brings back memories, although my first show wasn't until New Year's Eve 1985/86 (DIO with Yngwie Malmsteen and TKO at the Seattle Coliseum).
I love that shirt!
I love that elvis shirt
Where the fuck have you been all my life. I'm trying to compile together videos and memories of South Florida and the Sportatorium is a major cornerstone to the life here in the seventies and eighties. It's so sad that today the place is a Sedano's. I'm glad for your stories. Never attended the Sportatorium and I regret it. Thank you for posting this
Dude..i love these stories so much.last time you put me on Something Big by Petty, MANYTHNX!
Quiet Riot/IronMaiden (my first concert ever); Fastway/AC/DC kicked ass!
Wish I lived down here then. Of course my house wouldn’t have been here then 😂.
Thank you for entertaining me
Bad Company on 4th of July 1979 Sporto
Sunrise musical theater yes sir..SRV
AC/DC opening act Midnight Flyers if same as Lakeland civic center
"Sportatorium" sounds like a joke name that would be used on Futurama as a venue
Amazing you could recall all those shows so long ago . So how many concerts did you attend at the Sportatorium ?
Must be over 50
Brother like listening into a mirror the best time for hard rock and metal went to most of the same shows only in Lakeland live in Orlando Mom grand parents Louisiana so when to a lot of show in both Shreveport and Dallas
Totally enjoying your recollections. I was 12 in 1983 (living in south Dade county, Cutler Ridge/Perrine area), and my fairly conservative parents would not let me go to "rock and roll concerts with the drugs and violence", no matter what. I had tickets to go see Rush on that Signals show at the Sporto, and they made me give them away. Ugh. I wanted to see that Maiden show as well but no dice. Finally they felt bad so we went to the Police Synchronicity show at the Orange Bowl. That was amazing. I still would rather have Rush and Maiden though.
Where were you living that you had to walk home from the Sportatorium?? If I had to do that I would have had to start a new life out there in the swamp. Or at the biker bar/whorehouse down the road...
I've got some storys for you !
Lakeland shows 82 AC/DC. Dec Van Halen 1982. 1983 Rush. ‘Def Leppard ,Iron Maiden AC/DC 1984 Van Halen the worst show ever seen
