A canternary arch is the natural curve that will support itself. The same curve of a hanging chain, hanging a chain will give the right curve.

Fascinating video. I SWAG the trick is to use cloth 'loose'/soft enough to be pulled into shape by gravity, so tension 'flows' smoothly.
    Best Wishes. ☮
Hooke was an extremely smart guy. He accused Newton of plagiarism. After his death, Newton set about removing him from history.
Technically, the derivative of the curve (formula) is continuous. That 'curve equation' is 'calculated automatically' by a chain under gravity.

So what isn't clear in the video (structural engineer here) is that the idea for a dome to be easy to build in the past would be to have its structure uniquely in compression. And the chain upside down gives you the natural shape of a structure purely in tension that has the same section along its length.
Today we can use steel, reinforced concrete, wood to resist to bending efforts. When there is bending moment in a structure, part of it is in tension, part of it is in compression. Think about a beam. They didn't have the steel or concrete that we have today to have the dome shape they wish.
So if they wanted to build the largest dome they could have, having its arches uniquely in compression, it would be a very very safe bet that the structure would be naturally stable.
