Something to pay very close attention to is the fact that the orcas are NOT physically harming humans. They are damaging one kind of boat, and only that kind. Gladys probably has a pretty legitimate reason for her anger. Those creatures need to NOT be messed with.

I think the Orcas might have realized that when boats enter their hunting grounds they get less food, so they might now associate boats with a potential threat to their survival and might be attacking them because of it. After all Orcas are some of the most intelligent mammals on Earth ( though the same can be said about dolphins and whales in general):

plus orcas like all cetaceans also talk to one another. dolphins have even been found (and orcas, being giant dolphins, may also be able to do this) to do something well beyond human speech: they combine their vocalisation skill with their auditory processing that enables them to see through echolocation, and they vocally replicate the echo return of physical objects, enabling them to transmit 3D images of objects they're talking about to other dolphins. if orcas are able to do this too, they wouldn"t even need to teach one another to attack particular boats through direct observation, they could show each other their mental image of what those those boats look like as viewed by sonar.
I've read about a different atudy about crow behaviour that also suggests complex speech-like communication. in it, researches made an effort to scare some wild crows while wearing conspicuous masks, and the crows' conditioned hatred of masked humans got propagated through the whole crow colony and for years afterwards in such a way that it seemed like the crows must have been telling each other about and describing the scary masked humans. if crows are able to express the concept of a human wearing a mask well enough for other crows to recognise them just from the description, that suggests way more complex communication than just expressions of emotions, which people generally think all non-human animals are limited to (so more like human words than like various expressive human grunting noises).

Reminds me of what used to happen with grey whales in Baja California. In the days of Mexican whalers, humans hunted the whales, and the local grey whales ferociously attacked and destroyed so many boats they were known as "devil fish". It wasn't until the 1970s - some 25 years after whaling in the region was finally banned - that the whales calmed down and began interacting with humans in a consistently friendly manner from then on.
So maybe some boat recently injured a baby orca off Spain and that's what has prompted them to start up these attacks.

Where should humans be? Where is our home? In the woods? No, that belongs to the bears and wolves. In cities? No, cities infringe on wild animals. To the PETA crowd, humans should die off so the rest of the animal kingdom can have the Earth.

I remember watching "Black Fish" that showed Orcas strategically planning their getaway when being chased by large fishing boats. The female took the calves one way, while the males diverted the boats. Very intelligent. As close knit as they are, its not hard to understand they are on the defense due to harm and capture. What's even more interesting is they have humans figured out before we really know what's going on with them, as with many animals, and we study them with sophisticated means, they study us through observation only.

@George Rivera I personally know because I studied anthropology. Many studies have been conducted on the intelligence of orcas. To begin with, they have the second largest brain of any ocean mammal. Their IQ is estimated to be around that of a teenage human. They have been observed to have vast cultural differences between pods in different parts of the world, from their hunting strategies, to their unique languages and social interactions. Orcas utilize unique communication techniques based on their geographical location.
One of the best examples of orca’s intelligence is the way that they cooperate when hunting. Orcas will isolate a seal on a floating block of ice. Working as a team, several orcas will swim at a high rate of speed, creating a bow wave that will push the seal to the edge of the ice. As the seal is washed off the ice, another orca will pop up and grab the seal off of the ice. They teach these strategies which have been passed down for generations to their offspring.

These things only get reported on YT and people think its a new event but its really not its just people have access to smart phones and camera's now and they post their videos online easily, people did not have that tech 70 or 80 years ago to document these episodes but they happened.

Orcas are amazing creatures. There's plenty of great videos here on the tube of Orcas displaying their supreme intelligence and advanced hunting techniques. One of the first videos that drew me to my fascination towards the orca was a video originally filmed back in the late 90s off the coast of California at the Farallon Islands. A mother and her calf attacked a white shark and ate its liver. The fascinating thing is how they did it. They rammed the side of the white shark, turning it upside down and putting it into tonic immobility. They clearly knew by flipping a white shark on its back, it would make the white shark immobile and they could have their way with it. Over the next decade, cases of white shark attacks popped up in both Australia and South Africa with the same hunting pattern. However, when hunting seals, their approach is much different. Orcas will purposely beach themselves, snatching the seal from 1 foot shallow water, and then wiggle themselves back into the open waters. Blue whales? A pod of 8-10 orcas will work together by having several Orcas take turn blocking the blow hole of the whale, while the rest work together, to keep the world from the surfing, ultimately suffocating it in open water. Not only do they have unique hunting techniques based on the marine animal they're hunting, but they have multiple options per animal. They're truly fascinating creatures.

It will definitely be coordinated. The species is well known for learning behaviours from each other. If they see another member of the pod doing it, particularly a dominant member, they will do it themselves.
Sadly the inevitable consequence of this will end up being us killing off this population because they have dared to defend themselves. Personally I am of the view that when you enter another animal's territory you adapt to them and learn to respect the boundaries. If I saw an orca in my street I'd be pretty alarmed. The trauma event is the most likely cause of this. They only attack sailboat rudders. Not the keel or the hull, just the rudder. This is very specific as is the shape of those rudders; a long rectangular shape unique to sailboats. Since no other type of pleasure craft has had an encounter with them that has resulted in this type of behavior it rules out the unruly or rambunctious behavior theory. I think it is easy to identify the cause at this point.
It should be noted the clip of the orcas chasing the power boat they showed at the outset was not connected to these attacks but simply old footage of orcas "wake-riding" behind a power boat. Orca are a species of dolphin and just like dolphin like to do this. Orca are very reluctant to endanger humans. Even when food is at stake. There are cases where seal pups, otters, and even penguins have jumped onto boats to escape their pursuers, even just sitting barely on the transom, inches from the water, and the orca have just watched and eventually left despite being able to easily get to their prey. They chose to forgo the meal and leave it be instead of risk harming a human.

Having said that, we as humans are always looking for reason in every act, Speculating and postering as if we understand but often the words that are spoken are more crucial. Nothing new here. Orcas have been known to attack boats in different parts of the world throughout history, but the frequency and intensity of the attacks vary depending on the region and the orca population. Some examples of historical orca attacks on boats are:
In 1976, an Italian racing yacht was rammed and sunk by an orca off the coast of Brazil.
In 1992, a pod of orcas attacked a fishing boat in Alaska, biting its propeller and hull.
In 2005, a group of orcas chased and bumped a Zodiac boat in Antarctica, causing it to lose power and drift for two hours.
In 2015, a pair of orcas damaged a sailboat’s rudder and steering system in New Zealand, forcing it to return to shore.

One more in 1972 three orcas attacked a cruising sailboat off the Galapagos Island. The story of survival by Dougal Robinson was published as "Survive the savage sea".

I'm not sure how likely but we also cannot rule out military experimentation gone wrong, orcas have a number of valuable attributes and can be trained well also but are obviously unpredictable as most intelligent mammals.

Mr Corwin didn't mention other possible reasons for these attacks. Dolphins and Orcas(Orcas are large Dolphins) use echo-location to hunt their food, and they have very sensitive hearing. If there has been an increasing number of boats using sonar or other sound-producing equipment, especially if the numbers of those sound sources has increased just lately, these noise-sources could be under attack. Like the video says, these critters are very smart; if the increase in noise lately has been bad enough, the orcas could be telling those intruders in the boats to "Get off of my lawn!"
