Something to pay very close attention to is the fact that the orcas are NOT physically harming humans. They are damaging one kind of boat, and only that kind. Gladys probably has a pretty legitimate reason for her anger. Those creatures need to NOT be messed with.
@@jeffhodge7272 That power boat was just filming the orcas. So far reports I've see say the ones being attacked are just large sail boats. Hove you seen reports that specify power boats have also been attacked?
@@N0B0DY_SP3C14L Yeah, the video they used was orcas playing in the wake and following the boat. Dolphins often do the same thing. I think they showed that video because they don't actually have any footage of any of the actual attacks.
I think the Orcas might have realized that when boats enter their hunting grounds they get less food, so they might now associate boats with a potential threat to their survival and might be attacking them because of it. After all Orcas are some of the most intelligent mammals on Earth ( though the same can be said about dolphins and whales in general):
@DolphinsWIthIgloos I didn’t specify how the Orca’s got less food only that they did. Even if a boat isn’t a fishing it likely will scare fish away if they’re moving fast enough in the water.
Yea I think we humans are fishing and consuming wayy too much. We can survive without over fishing, just profit is lost. So weird ‘cause we aren’t gonna have food if people just focus on profit. By then, its too late idk.
Let’s not forget about the Whale named “Moon” who was hit by a boat in 2021 and is actively traveling with a broken spine. Don’t think she ain’t telling all the others her story. This is a clear protest. I love it. ❤️💯
🤮nooo really!? Omg.. poor thing 😢😢😢 I have a messed up back and it’s torture. It really really is. I daydream about hurting the doctors that made me out to be liar.. slashing some tires at least
thinking about all the animals in the ocean and on land suffering because of human destruction is the saddest thing imaginable.... the whole world is suffering because of what humans have done, including humans.
plus orcas like all cetaceans also talk to one another. dolphins have even been found (and orcas, being giant dolphins, may also be able to do this) to do something well beyond human speech: they combine their vocalisation skill with their auditory processing that enables them to see through echolocation, and they vocally replicate the echo return of physical objects, enabling them to transmit 3D images of objects they're talking about to other dolphins. if orcas are able to do this too, they wouldn"t even need to teach one another to attack particular boats through direct observation, they could show each other their mental image of what those those boats look like as viewed by sonar. I've read about a different atudy about crow behaviour that also suggests complex speech-like communication. in it, researches made an effort to scare some wild crows while wearing conspicuous masks, and the crows' conditioned hatred of masked humans got propagated through the whole crow colony and for years afterwards in such a way that it seemed like the crows must have been telling each other about and describing the scary masked humans. if crows are able to express the concept of a human wearing a mask well enough for other crows to recognise them just from the description, that suggests way more complex communication than just expressions of emotions, which people generally think all non-human animals are limited to (so more like human words than like various expressive human grunting noises).
I laughed at him saying if it’s bizarre for orcas to “orche”strate attacks lol 😂 it’s basically in the name … they are tired of our kind blatantly not respecting their territory
Reminds me of what used to happen with grey whales in Baja California. In the days of Mexican whalers, humans hunted the whales, and the local grey whales ferociously attacked and destroyed so many boats they were known as "devil fish". It wasn't until the 1970s - some 25 years after whaling in the region was finally banned - that the whales calmed down and began interacting with humans in a consistently friendly manner from then on. So maybe some boat recently injured a baby orca off Spain and that's what has prompted them to start up these attacks.
@ The Be Sharp Sorry to tell you, but some years ago Japan was given permission to take 300 whales per year. 😢 All that progress wiped out just that quickly!
NO!!!! It is not "their" home. The oceans are the home of more than just whales. A sailboat out for a day in the water is not a threat. They just like killing things. Thus the name, killer whales. Where should humans be? Where is our home? In the woods? No, that belongs to the bears and wolves. In cities? No, cities infringe on wild animals. To the PETA crowd, humans should die off so the rest of the animal kingdom can have the Earth.
I remember watching "Black Fish" that showed Orcas strategically planning their getaway when being chased by large fishing boats. The female took the calves one way, while the males diverted the boats. Very intelligent. As close knit as they are, its not hard to understand they are on the defense due to harm and capture. What's even more interesting is they have humans figured out before we really know what's going on with them, as with many animals, and we study them with sophisticated means, they study us through observation only.
@bigbox1431 you value the continuation of your people/ species, no requirement to make it about gender, but intelligent strategy for survival. How many male orcas get it, but You Don't!? 😂😂😂
Yeah I think they got the traumatic event part correct. This is what I would think most should look back to as between this and whaling were the more likely candidates
I think this is example of how much we still have to learn about the ocean and it’s inhabitants, and incorporate more thoughtful behaviors when entering their habitat. 🐋
agree! however, i think it would be great if that were true for ALL living beings and their habitats. whether they are behind bars in zoos, have to perform in circuses or are among the more than 83 billion livestock killed each year (fish not included. they are so many that they can only be calculated in tons): every living being has the right to live peacefully in a non-destructive environment. why don't we call for a monkey rebellion, fighting against the chainsaws? or a cow rebellion? or insect rebellion (oh wait, i think there are not enough insects left to start a rebellion) the way we are treating the earth right now, every ocean and every land surface is becoming an increasingly destructive environment. and don't get me wrong, i totally agree with your post ^_^
You know white people gnna disrespectful any where they go. Look at America. Turned the country into the most hated country but when the natives were here.. it was magical.
It's not only about the ocean animals though. All of the animals all over the world are exhibiting the same strange retaliatory behaviors as these orcas are.
Orcas are incredibly intelligent creatures. I would theorize that either several boats accidentally struck orcas, or were actually hunting orcas and now they are retaliating. The other possibility is competition for food. I would look to see if there was overfishing in the area where the attacks occurred.
@George Rivera I personally know because I studied anthropology. Many studies have been conducted on the intelligence of orcas. To begin with, they have the second largest brain of any ocean mammal. Their IQ is estimated to be around that of a teenage human. They have been observed to have vast cultural differences between pods in different parts of the world, from their hunting strategies, to their unique languages and social interactions. Orcas utilize unique communication techniques based on their geographical location. One of the best examples of orca’s intelligence is the way that they cooperate when hunting. Orcas will isolate a seal on a floating block of ice. Working as a team, several orcas will swim at a high rate of speed, creating a bow wave that will push the seal to the edge of the ice. As the seal is washed off the ice, another orca will pop up and grab the seal off of the ice. They teach these strategies which have been passed down for generations to their offspring.
I agree that this behavior is likely motivated by a shared traumatic event. Or, I wonder, if scientists have taken a closer look at the engines in these boats and if they are emanating a sound or frequency that could be interpreted as hostile by the whales.
Blackfish revenge? Enough is enough, humanity has been the predator, but all the other animals receive the blame...then suffer the consequences. I get crazy when ignorant people blast their pounding bass in my area, I can only image what these guys go through!
yeah they said that it was traumatic behaviour in a previous video posted on YT, my father was a fisherman off the West coast of Scotland north of Ireland ( North Atlantic)in the 50s and 60s he told me stories of Orcas attacking fishing boats back then so its not a new thing its been going on for a long time, they are territorial and will do anything to scare off or attack boats or anything that they see as a threat to them or their Calves or their fishing grounds. These things only get reported on YT and people think its a new event but its really not its just people have access to smart phones and camera's now and they post their videos online easily, people did not have that tech 70 or 80 years ago to document these episodes but they happened.
And yet after sinking all those boats not one human was injured by an Orca. It's absolutely amazing that to this this day not one human has ever been attacked by a Killer Whale in the wild in recorded history.....except of course when they're taking away from their families and held captive to act as a dancing monkey for yucks and bucks. Whales/Dolphins are amazing creatures and should be respected as such.
These are extremely intelligent creatures. That's a fact. If they are attacking boats, It's because someone in a boat, did something to aggrivate them. Human beings are damaging the oceans for decades with garbage, sound, and extremely uncaring navigation practices. How can anyone be surprised, knowing these facts, that humans are not sharing the planet in a caring way. These are the last combative attempts by a species we hardly know. Sad, horrible humanity at its worse, destroying another species and quizzical at their rebellious departure from existence.
These are my thoughts, too. Perhaps there are locals there who are killing the orcas. Thus, they have associated boats with danger that must be eradicated.
If you did a little research, literally anyone at the NBC, you’d see that this’s been going on for a while, and it ties back to local fishermen and local orcas (of which there are several dozen) fighting over fish. Supposedly the fishermen went after the orcas for ruining their nets, and they think they MAY have injured (or killed) a calf, and since then they’ve been attacking civilian boats.
The fact there are such low numbers of this specific whale and why its happening its beyond sad and a warning to what is to come if all of us humans refuse to change
I believe the traumatic event is limited food. These orcas probably understand that these ships are taking food from their territory. Sea mammals level of intelligence is amazing and not to be underestimated.
@@SilencedByRUclips clearly you haven’t been paying attention: there aren’t plenty of fish and that’s why you’re eating Tilpia now. We’re over harvesting the seas and have been for several decades.
They are not attacking SHIPS they are specifically "playing" with rudders of sailboats with the engine off. They are playing with the only part of the boats that's moving underwater. When you speculate with over broad or incorrect information it just sounds like the nonsense it is
Orcas hunt to feed themselves. So why exactly is it wrong for humans to do the same? We weren't designed to be vegans, and Orcas aren't either. Yes,we need to stop dumping stuff in the ocean, but hunting to feed ourselves, whether on land or sea, is literally the life of every animal on this planet
Remember that video with the newly weds that had Orcas chasing the boat like that? I think it was the first video to capture this behaviour. I knew it was signs of aggression but everyone in the comments were going 'awww their happy and celebrating for them!' Orcas chasing a boat like that, to me, is showing their braveness and exposing themselves, their speed, size, power to us. Charging us to leave. I wish we would give them their right to have a natural life
You're off the rails. Humanity thinks?? You DO realize that the harm done to orcas is not done by humanity as a whole, right? And you have no evidence as to exactly WHY these animals are attacking the boats. Unless.... you can read their minds. Can you?
Hmmmm just such a mystery….. maybe just maybe it has something to do with us absolutely destroying and poisoning their habitat. That might have something to do with it👍
I think of all the noise pollution in the ocean because of boat motors and oil rigs and sonar. The constant loud sound is probably driving them insane and they’re getting rid of what is causing the noise.
This has been going on specifically in the straight of Gibraltar area for years now. They believe it all started with one Orca being struck by a propeller or injured buy a boat and therefore now they see the boats as a threat and have resorted to attacking them. They also believe that one specific Orca has taught the other orcas.
I was submarines in US Navy and anytime we would be on the surface, these Orcas would often swim along side of the bow. As if they were escorting us. Beautiful creatures indeed.
I was a submariner as well and I often wondered what those poor animals felt about sonar. Not ours so much as we rarely ever used active sonar but the destroyers and such surface ships that will ping for days trying to look for submarines.
The orcas are TIRED of y’all being in their space. I’m a firm believer that we should NOT be in the middle of the ocean. Maybe they are thinking the same thing.
They’re quite intelligent and if they communicate with Japanese whales they’re definitely identifying nautical vessels as a threat stemming from traumatic events just as Jeff said.
Easy the same way monkeys on one island can learn how to clean their food in the water to rid it of sand after monkeys on a completely different island were taught how by the scientists running the experiment. It’s called collective consciousness.
Or simply just the years of migration we don’t fully understand them either for all we know some rich dude out in the Mediterranean was poaching them or doing something that would cause them trauma.
@@blueballedtech are you an ai cause I’m sure Japanese whales speak the same “language” as Mediterranean whales! If they did speak Japanese they’d refer to you as a “baka” 😂
If they are so intelligent and have emotions then i think it’s possible they could have capacity to exact revenge. There’s a recent story of pictures of the rudder of boat chewed up by an orca. To me this is an animal that’s making things personal after experiencing something bad on the part of humans.
@The Guy Bro What?😂 so all those water bottles, plastic bags and baby diapers in the ocean ...that's what? Nature's jewelry or something? Get the flip outta here😂😂😂😂😂
The 1977 movie Orca still terrifies me to this day. Seeing this behavior really happen is scary. We deserve whatever happens to us for damaging the ocean with our pollutants.
They’re highly intelligent plus social enough to know their enemies when they see them and are brave enough to fight back after having lost their share of family members to boats. Fight back or die. It’s really not that trivial.
I miss that guy. He was on during the Croc Hunter era, so he was a outshone, but he was great. He had a comedic way of talking about animals. He was basically Daniel Tosh in looks and personality, but with animals. He was also much safer with the animals than the Croc Hunter, which is why I think he was less popular.
Exactly, I worked for a Zoo in D.C. Yes, animals carry grudges. They have feelings, language and their own culture. Most humans are very arrogant. Except, for the indigenous ppl who see nature as a part of us.
Nature does not give a crap who lives or dies thats why horrific diseases and parasites exist and a large percentage of animals literally eat each other alive. That said we can choose to look after the Orca's.

Do we really have to ask why they are doing this? It's actually a wonder it hasn't happened sooner. Boats are intruders into their home. They are protecting their home. They're fed up. I can't even believe anyone would have to ask this.
Took the words right out of my mouth. Also have to add another motivation for their anger in that we steal their babies for sea parks. They become incredibly distressed when it happens, it's gut wrenching to watch. They're vengeful creatures with long memories.
Why would it be bizarre to believe that animals have some intelligence and can work together? Just because we can’t work together doesn’t mean they can’t
I love that this video went from shedding light on a scary subject to be bringing attention towards a whale that is desperately fighting extinction. Good way to use the fear to spread awareness
also there's not enough data to actually suggest their fighting extinction... It's probably safe to assume every species on this planet is endangered but there are actual species that are seriously threatened to extinction

humans have proven to be a threat to them and they know what boats mean (normally means the pod lost one of their own to the boat). The beautiful thing about Orcas is that then a pod learns something, it doesn't forget it and it passes that knowledge down to the young who will in turn pass that knowledge onto their offspring. This is why each pod hunts specific prey.
@jish55, Crows do the same thing. A third generation crow can 'recognise' the face of a person who was nasty to their grandparent, even though [he] never saw that person before! 😱💖🙌😺
God forbid should they fight back?! I can't believe that we are questioning this. Considering how harmful humans are to these sentient beings, I am surprised that it doesn't happen more often.
Orcas are amazing creatures. There's plenty of great videos here on the tube of Orcas displaying their supreme intelligence and advanced hunting techniques. One of the first videos that drew me to my fascination towards the orca was a video originally filmed back in the late 90s off the coast of California at the Farallon Islands. A mother and her calf attacked a white shark and ate its liver. The fascinating thing is how they did it. They rammed the side of the white shark, turning it upside down and putting it into tonic immobility. They clearly knew by flipping a white shark on its back, it would make the white shark immobile and they could have their way with it. Over the next decade, cases of white shark attacks popped up in both Australia and South Africa with the same hunting pattern. However, when hunting seals, their approach is much different. Orcas will purposely beach themselves, snatching the seal from 1 foot shallow water, and then wiggle themselves back into the open waters. Blue whales? A pod of 8-10 orcas will work together by having several Orcas take turn blocking the blow hole of the whale, while the rest work together, to keep the world from the surfing, ultimately suffocating it in open water. Not only do they have unique hunting techniques based on the marine animal they're hunting, but they have multiple options per animal. They're truly fascinating creatures.
They are emotional, and they will fight when they are scared, angered, or desperate. With what we're doing to our climate and the oceans is it really surprising that the whales are showing more aggression.
Why don't you go advocate to build more off shore windmills Mr. climate change? I guess you haven't heard they're responsible for killing all kinds of marine mammals.
Bro, it's crucial to acknowledge the negative actions we've taken. We have consumed their food, polluted their habitats, harmed their families, and subjected their species to enslavement. It's important for us to reflect on these behaviors and work towards change. Let's strive to show respect, protect their homes, and promote a more compassionate and harmonious coexistence with all beings.
That just sounds dumb, and non-plausible. They are attacking sailboats, not fishing rigs. Un-woke yourself and use a bit of logic instead of regurgitating the most common programming.
They have no food but what they can catch just like humans or any other animal. They like us or any other animal are reacting to competition or a threat…..
@@joshkrause2977 Do you not understand the difference between a fishing vessel and a sailboat? Use a bit of deductive reasoning, not emotive feelings. Even whales can do this.
It will definitely be coordinated. The species is well known for learning behaviours from each other. If they see another member of the pod doing it, particularly a dominant member, they will do it themselves. Sadly the inevitable consequence of this will end up being us killing off this population because they have dared to defend themselves. Personally I am of the view that when you enter another animal's territory you adapt to them and learn to respect the boundaries. If I saw an orca in my street I'd be pretty alarmed. We turn up in their street and are surprised when we aren't welcome.
Probably because boats are loud, dangerous when under them, and need gas to run…. Shiiii if someone had a vehicle in my living room running I’d be pretty mad too
Well if boats are killing their mates and/or young, whether intentional or not, it's no wonder they would react so aggressively. They have come to learn over time that these ships pose a danger to them and react accordingly. Just a theory, but it seems plausible.

If you've ever watched orcas hunting seals in the Arctic you'd understand how incredibly smart they are using the wake they create by swimming side by side to push seals off small icebergs
They are highly intelligent and work together for coordinated attacks. I like to refer to them as the wolves of the ocean because of the way they hunt together, surrounding, chasing, and isolating their prey.
Orcas are incredibly intelligent porpoises. Known for their exceptional abilities to coordinate attacks, make plans, and learn. My theory is that either several boats hit the orcas accidently, are deliberately hunting them, or its the competition for food. Either way they could have a concept of injustice and personal rights, and are seeking revenge for wrongdoings done by humans.
Can’t possibly be the fact people are kidnapping their babies for the places like sea world, or harpooning them, or doing any of the other evil crap people do to other creatures
It's been many years since Orcas were taken for Sea World or anywhere else. And it certainly wasn't done by little sailboats. You don't seem very bright.
I’m pretty sure they have been communicating to each other over the years that boats and people cause them horrific trauma. They’re not stupid and I guess some of them want us to leave them and their food sources alone

I always thought it was amazing that people didn't think so. It's absurd to think humans are literally the only sapient creatures on this planet/in the universe.
Many people and field experts know about how smart animals can be and they sometimes keep on testing that potential. But Orcas is anyways a different story. Orcas's intelligence potential is thought to be higher than any animal arguably also including apes in some respects. We have known about Orcas' intelligence for a very long time including how they can coordinate attacks (them hitting together to break a floating iceberg to get the seal on sitting on top of it, for example; you can see the video) but the question is they seemed relatively unharmful to humans and boats and so why the recent attacks.

They also have dialects between pods. I did my final on orcas (orcinus orca) and have been advocating for them ever since. Trust and believe that they remember how cruel and exploitative humanity has been to them.
@horace sheffield . I absolutely agree. There was a viral video years ago of a pod of orcas hunting a seal on a block of ice. It showed how intelligent and orchestrated they can be. So agree, all about perspective but the fishing vessels are responsible for hurting all species of whales, the orcas are just smart enough to launch attacks.
The trauma event is the most likely cause of this. They only attack sailboat rudders. Not the keel or the hull, just the rudder. This is very specific as is the shape of those rudders; a long rectangular shape unique to sailboats. Since no other type of pleasure craft has had an encounter with them that has resulted in this type of behavior it rules out the unruly or rambunctious behavior theory. I think it is easy to identify the cause at this point. It should be noted the clip of the orcas chasing the power boat they showed at the outset was not connected to these attacks but simply old footage of orcas "wake-riding" behind a power boat. Orca are a species of dolphin and just like dolphin like to do this. Orca are very reluctant to endanger humans. Even when food is at stake. There are cases where seal pups, otters, and even penguins have jumped onto boats to escape their pursuers, even just sitting barely on the transom, inches from the water, and the orca have just watched and eventually left despite being able to easily get to their prey. They chose to forgo the meal and leave it be instead of risk harming a human.
The basic rule of thumb should apply the ocean as much as it does traveling to another country, Even though we evolved from fish, that doesn't mean the ocean is our home. We are merely guests in that world and as such, should respect the native creatures that live in it. Having said that, we as humans are always looking for reason in every act, Speculating and postering as if we understand but often the words that are spoken are more crucial. While I don't appreciate the start of this video, as sensationalism is easier to get people's attention, I do appreciate Jeff's explanation as most would jump to another conclusion.
@@keirgalein I agree in principle, but it is a problem; as there are reports like this that have been going out for months, since this has started, that are very misleading. They make it seem like these are widespread attacks and leave out the specific nature of the incidents. Even this report did so and it was from a reputable news organization. People can be easily misled by soundbite news reports that offer too little information. Orca populations around the world are struggling to survive because of overfishing, destruction of fish habitat (a real issue where I live), and encroachment of humanity. The last thing they need is people treating them like sharks when they encounter them.
I live in the Balearic Islands. During the COVID lockdown there were no tourist boats in the Mediterranean. Marine life returned immediately and in abundance. My guess is they want to keep it like that
The novel “Survive the Savage Sea” was about a family surviving over a month in a raft on the ocean after their boat was sunk by Orcas. I think it was written in the 70’s. Based on a true story, great photos and diagrams.
Interesting side-note. I remember reading about in the olden days when whaling was still common practice and whaling boats were all sail-driven, at some point the sperm whales figured out that they could get away by swimming upwind. It seems that when one set of whales figured this out, they communicated it to all other sperm whales via the sperm whale grapevine, because they all adopted this tactic pretty much at the same time pretty much worldwide. So we know for a fact that some whales have languages, they at least have a word for "upwind".
You know all these but yet talked as if the subject in the video is of whale species. Anwyays, yes, orcas may have stellar communication but they are not whales.
@@khismet The comment never stated explicitly but it implied it implicitly. Read it again for comprehension especially the last sentence which implied even further that the OP thinks that Orcas are whales, not sperm whales but another sub species of whales with sperm whales given as an example, which I have seen some people already do in the comment section maybe because of the nickname given to orcas "killer whales". But maybe you're right and I just leaned in that direction because I saw another comment calling orcas whales a few comments ago and I jumped to the conclusion.

After seeing a documentary (Animal Planet, I think) of orca packs capsizing icebergs to get seals for dinner, the thought of being attacked by them while on a boat sounds terrifying!
There are some videos and are terrifying, but still there is no proof that an orca killed a man, no?. I think it can be becuase ilegal fishing in southern Spain throws to the sea a lot of fish and guts, and orcas just want their free food.
In the wild Orca attacks on humans are extremely rare to non-existent. They do not see us as food. There is no verifiable/reliable source documenting attacks on humans in the wild.
*what if someone went to your apartment building, started polluting and destroying it, murdering more and more people, and then publicly referred to you as the killers. And then you started fighting back and they start saying their researchers are debating why you’re doing this*
I also consider the possibility that they see that those boats are scaring their games away and they're trying to preserve their environment. You think not, even lesser animals are very jealous of their territories.
Nothing new here. Orcas have been known to attack boats in different parts of the world throughout history, but the frequency and intensity of the attacks vary depending on the region and the orca population. Some examples of historical orca attacks on boats are: In 1976, an Italian racing yacht was rammed and sunk by an orca off the coast of Brazil. In 1992, a pod of orcas attacked a fishing boat in Alaska, biting its propeller and hull. In 2005, a group of orcas chased and bumped a Zodiac boat in Antarctica, causing it to lose power and drift for two hours. In 2015, a pair of orcas damaged a sailboat’s rudder and steering system in New Zealand, forcing it to return to shore.
One more in 1972 three orcas attacked a cruising sailboat off the Galapagos Island. The story of survival by Dougal Robinson was published as "Survive the savage sea".
I’ve heard during the international Orca seas meeting that the Orca Council have decided that boats are a threat to their food supply. Orcas have declared War to boats.

I'm not sure how likely but we also cannot rule out military experimentation gone wrong, orcas have a number of valuable attributes and can be trained well also but are obviously unpredictable as most intelligent mammals.
Mr Corwin didn't mention other possible reasons for these attacks. Dolphins and Orcas(Orcas are large Dolphins) use echo-location to hunt their food, and they have very sensitive hearing. If there has been an increasing number of boats using sonar or other sound-producing equipment, especially if the numbers of those sound sources has increased just lately, these noise-sources could be under attack. Like the video says, these critters are very smart; if the increase in noise lately has been bad enough, the orcas could be telling those intruders in the boats to "Get off of my lawn!"

Orcas have had terrible things done to them by humans. They’re extremely intelligent and have emotions just like humans do. I would guess that they’re looking for revenge. The atrocities committed against these intelligent, majestic, creatures by humans, who were here before humans, is unreal.
Something to pay very close attention to is the fact that the orcas are NOT physically harming humans. They are damaging one kind of boat, and only that kind. Gladys probably has a pretty legitimate reason for her anger. Those creatures need to NOT be messed with.
Well that’s disappointing.
One kind of boat?
The boat in the clip was a power boat. Not a sailboat.
looks like Russia's naval submarines are taking the offensive.
Exactly why
Great point!!!
Orcas are the biggest dolphin species
@DolphinsWIthIgloos I didn’t specify how the Orca’s got less food only that they did. Even if a boat isn’t a fishing it likely will scare fish away if they’re moving fast enough in the water.
Yea I think we humans are fishing and consuming wayy too much. We can survive without over fishing, just profit is lost. So weird ‘cause we aren’t gonna have food if people just focus on profit. By then, its too late idk.
Let’s not forget about the Whale named “Moon” who was hit by a boat in 2021 and is actively traveling with a broken spine. Don’t think she ain’t telling all the others her story.

thinking about all the animals in the ocean and on land suffering because of human destruction is the saddest thing imaginable.... the whole world is suffering because of what humans have done, including humans.
It's only "weird" and "bizarre" if you think animals don't think, plan, and have memories and emotions.
Shut up
It's like humans forgot that we're animals too. We're not that far above them
plus orcas like all cetaceans also talk to one another. dolphins have even been found (and orcas, being giant dolphins, may also be able to do this) to do something well beyond human speech: they combine their vocalisation skill with their auditory processing that enables them to see through echolocation, and they vocally replicate the echo return of physical objects, enabling them to transmit 3D images of objects they're talking about to other dolphins. if orcas are able to do this too, they wouldn"t even need to teach one another to attack particular boats through direct observation, they could show each other their mental image of what those those boats look like as viewed by sonar.
Reminds me of slavery.
Nah they're just tired of having their food source robbed.
Makes sense. They are extremely vocal and their cries would only heighten their defensive postures until they become offensive to stop the attacks.
Go Orca's rah rah rah!

Sorry to tell you, but some years ago Japan was given permission to take 300 whales per year. 😢 All that progress wiped out just that quickly!
Who remember's (Richard Harris)?
This is a defense, not an attack. You're in their home. Leave them alone.

That sounds like the Patriarchy is alive and well in the Orca community

the way we are treating the earth right now, every ocean and every land surface is becoming an increasingly destructive environment.

Orcas are incredibly intelligent creatures. I would theorize that either several boats accidentally struck orcas, or were actually hunting orcas and now they are retaliating. @@smokedpotato I thought they said they were sailboats? 🤔
@@newthesis9480 I really enjoyed reading your comment, thank you for flexing some knowledge on us!

I agree that this behavior is likely motivated by a shared traumatic event. Or, I wonder, if scientists have taken a closer look at the engines in these boats and if they are emanating a sound or frequency that could be interpreted as hostile by the whales.

yeah they said that it was traumatic behaviour in a previous video posted on YT, my father was a fisherman off the West coast of Scotland north of Ireland ( North Atlantic)in the 50s and 60s he told me stories of Orcas attacking fishing boats back then so its not a new thing its been going on for a long time, they are territorial and will do anything to scare off or attack boats or anything that they see as a threat to them or their Calves or their fishing grounds.

If you did a little research, literally anyone at the NBC, you’d see that this’s been going on for a while, and it ties back to local fishermen and local orcas (of which there are several dozen) fighting over fish.

Orcas asking same question: why humans attacking and killing fish in ocean?
We are now understanding that animals are smarter than we thought they were.

That's immensely sad and a amazing awakening.
#teamorca
@horace sheffield the difference is that orcas remain in their environment. Human activities impact the entire PLANET.
enigmaticalspiral - You did your final on them? And yet you don't know that the plural of "orca" is NOT "orca's"?
Thanks, some one with some common sense!!
People can be easily misled by soundbite news reports that offer too little information.

The novel “Survive the Savage Sea” was about a family surviving over a month in a raft on the ocean after their boat was sunk by Orcas. I think it was written in the 70’s. Based on a true story, great photos and diagrams.
Interesting

Completely agree
There are some videos and are terrifying, but still there is no proof that an orca killed a man, no?.
I think it can be becuase ilegal fishing in southern Spain throws to the sea a lot of fish and guts, and orcas just want their free food.
In the wild Orca attacks on humans are extremely rare to non-existent. They do not see us as food. There is no verifiable/reliable source documenting attacks on humans in the wild.

Nothing new here. Orcas have been known to attack boats in different parts of the world throughout history, but the frequency and intensity of the attacks vary depending on the region and the orca population. Some examples of historical orca attacks on boats are:
In 1976, an Italian racing yacht was rammed and sunk by an orca off the coast of Brazil.
Remember the bisons? The Orcas can also become extinct without too much effort
Lol
Ooo... I wanna go to this meeting! Any schedule on future Orca meetings?

This seems to make the most sense
Why are there only attacks in the straight of gibraltar then?
did it happen before 5G cellphones?
So they hate noise so they pick the quietest boat to attack? These sail boats make the least noise of all boats.
The question isn’t why, but why not? Look at all the trauma and chaos we’ve caused their oceans.
