The best era in f1 motorsport was the late 90s early 2000s and the v10 monsters musical symphony, just seeing these cars back on track would be immense, drive your hero car Ben
Absolutely awesome. Love the whole idea of the TDF programme. Huge respect for James's knowledge of the old F1 cars, and the ability of the whole team to restore and reverse engineer these complex machines where necessary 👍
Also one of the best sounding, it was also slightly louder than the rest of the field from what I remember hearing them say back at Silverstone that year.
JV explained his unique wheel paddle setup in one issue of F1 Racing magazine back in 2000 or 2001. It was to do with de-cluttering the clutch paddle-side so he can perform better starts. It also saved a few grams of weight. He also preferred a long-ish throttle pedal travel so he could better control the torque demand
@@BenCollinsDrives Jacques Villeneuve was one of the best starters on the grid so it must have worked. Every race he would gain lots of places on the start.
Great episode... fantastic to see these 'old' things being used. Love what TDF are doing (they are close to me too) I would say the Minardi, but I know you want to drive the Williams... so the Williams is my vote!
The Honda Bar would be my 1st pick! BTW, I've been a fan of yours before I knew your name like a few people haha! I name is just a name and for me it was your driving style and the way you attacked corners and utilized weight transfers in particular that made me a fan, your style was very understandable and intuitive to me because I guess, it was similar to mine which is rare in my small group of driving friends circle. Anyways loved that you decided to utilize the social media outlet like RUclips because we all wouldn't still get to see and learn more about you and your passions. And, notice only gave what would be my 1st choice? Its my driving/racing philosophy, which happens to be the same logic I use to navigate my life in general and that is that its all has become instinctual and intuitive, which deals with being very decisive, committing for better or worst, taking into account risk and reward and the particular variables involved at the current moment - I could go into more detail but as comments go, I know its already to lengthy. So I'd pick the Honda Bar and everything else would just be whatever they decide, because in the end, I'd be super appreciative that I got to drive an F1 car, period! Cheers Ben, and looking forward to all your future content!
Got to be Buttons V10 for many reasons. , great detailed interview too guys , car history like this needs preserving for future generations ❤ Ben just go steady on the clutch if u take one of these out , that silver supra you drove of Mr Broadbents had clutch failure when Danny took it out just after you 😂.
7:20 I think the reason for Jacques Villeneuve same side shifting paddles probably came from his Indycar experience where they had the sequential manual stick shift.
Ben's understanding of the machines, drivers and history makes him the best presenter in the world for performance cars and race cars for mine. He knows more than me and I work for a renowned performance shop with a lifelong passion for motosport. Hats off man. Awesome episode. And James is an engineering stig! ❤
13:25: The 1994 Benetton did indeed have launch control. On a podcast with Scott Mansell, Willam Toet admitted it was real, as well as explained how it worked and why it was still legal within the regulations at the time
Great episode. Probably 1, but only Ben knows what's best for him. I started watching F1 around 98/99 with my mother when I was 9/10. A great time to discover motor racing, then I read Dr. Sid Watkin's book and started playing Gran Turismo 2, F1 99 and Driver 2, and Ace Combat 3. Discovered I had rare and unusual piloting skills, que the fun 🙂. I hope Ben gets to drive those cars, would be great.
3. The jordan, due to it being more original than the other cars and more representative of what it would be like in the day, that would be the car I'd like to drive. If the Williams or the newer BAR had all their original running gear they would top my list. I still remember Adrian Reynard claiming that BAR would be on pole for, and win their first race in what would have to be one of the most spectacular examples of mixing up one's abilities and ambitions. I'm really looking forward to watching whatever you drive.
Fantastic video would love to visit that place, The 1995 Jordan is the standout for me. The 1999 BAR would be second as they both in original condition. I think that particular 95 Jordan chassis took 2nd place at Canada.
Have to say the 1995 Jordan. In my opinion, no era of F1 is perfect, but for me 1994-1997 was overall the closest to perfection for technical regulations; track width wide enough for the cars to still mostly rely on mechanical grip, but not so wide overtaking becomes overly difficult. Short enough wheelbase for the cars to be highly reactive. Driver aids banned aside from sequential paddle shifters. Slick tyres. Engine wise virtually limitless within the displacement limit as long as it was naturally aspirated. Some teams had full manual steering racks, albeit because they were backmarkers. The cars 1995 onwards were very safe sans HANS device without being severely overweight coddleboxes as 2018-present. I know times change, but I hope F1 one day goes back to a similar ballpark wheelbase and track width as that 1993-1997 era, bans or significantly reduces power steering assistance, and instead of pushing for the hybrid assistance to reach 50% of the total powertrain power like the FIA wants for 2026, push for development to aim for increased power-to-weight density from the hybrid assistance by imposing tight weight limits on the hybrid components. F1 cars shouldn't weigh above the high-600kg range imo. They're already on the right path with cleaner aero. If we can't have V10's and V12's again, at least let us have cars which dart around with drivers having to earn their millions getting a workout from steering wheels ripping their arms all over the place. That's exciting to watch. Seeing as none of these historic F1 cars are truly period correct anyway, I would love to see a final-spec 3.0 V10 20k screamer with some modern-day improvements mated to one of the early 3.5 era wideboy H-pattern cars.
Pretty cool to see that FW20. I’ve sat in that a few times and still have part of its front wing. For some reason it was sat underneath the Wind Tunnel at Williams for a while. I used to wander down there taking a break and sit quietly in it with a cup of tea in the evenings.
IF I had to choose... I think 5, but if you'd rather go classic, I'd go 2! since they're both awesome pieces of kit! (Also, phenomenal video Mr Collins!, seriously, high-quality deep dives on old F1 engineering is too scarce, and I'm soo happy we get to see so many different cars/lil throwbacks to them in their heydays!)
I'd rather have the cars be much lighter than getting some insane sound back that is in no way sustainable. How many races could one of those engines do and how much fuel did they consume?
Amazing video ... Brings back great memories seeing all them great V10's again. Thank you Ben for bringing it to us , it's definitely something I'd never get to see in my lifetime. It has to be team Jordan for me 🇮🇪, Eddie Jordan was punching well above his weight for such a small team. Had some great driver's as well, including one Eddie Irvine who famously got a punch from Senna, in the 93 season I think. I think Eddie Jordan would definitely be a stig fan 😂. I vote for the Peugeot!
Great informative entertaining video, thank you. Stig on a Sunday evening feels familiar. Drive whichever you can and prefer, my vote would go to Jensen’s now cosworth powered Honda, screaming v10 IS the sound of F1, please let us hear it with you at the wheel
Very cool video ( again ) from Ben. Just one tiny thing; I loved the sound of the V10's from this period with a passion, but the era before ( 3.5 litres ) had the loudest noise I reckon. I first saw F1 in 91' at Silverstone. When they came past me on hangar straight, there was a huge wall of noise that just blew me away - a nice way to be introduced to F1 I still think 😅
This was really fun to see the old war horses. People seem to love the V10 period, but my favorite period was when Williams had the 1.5 L Honda turbos. Amazing! Thanks 🎸🔪
Absolutely fantastic video. Lots of interesting facts around the cars within the building. Having done Bedford Aerodrome track multiple times it’s nice knowing what’s inside the “ TDF “ building. Looking forward to seeing the onboard videos 🏁🤘🏻
God this is so good! The fact that this on RUclips and not a segment in an actual race in TV is unreal and I'm incredibly thankful! 🙏 Also Ben, the fact you've got the knowledge of what goes on in minute detail and can iterate it so well is a pleasure. I'm honestly going to start playing the lottery so I can buy one of these and go round Donny in a proper car and not Montego! 22:22 perfect curves 😍 👌🏼
Your best vid to date. TDF - I believe my friend and I had a long chat with them at the Silverstone Classic, all about the Force India car. Amazing. My choice is the J Villenueve car but it would also be great to see the TDF car being Stiged.
What an incredible insight and video. This channel is amazing. Id say you need to drive Buttons car. The fastest f1 car. But Villeneuve's car is also iconic and has history to respect and be drawn to.
Very cool. Didn't expect to watch the whole video but the discussion was just too cool. Would love to see Ben drive one of these next year. Really neat program, this TDF program, and the dude here James Densley was very interesting.
Please more videos like this, having a behind the scenes into some old F1 cars was amazing!! I think some interviews with some more ex F1 engineers would be awesome content as well. Thank you so much for the content!! Drive the Williams please!!! Also thanks to TDF for adding another thing to my bucket list if I ever become a millionaire.
Ben your channel is my favorite. Everyone that knows you, respect you. You are a class act and a legend in your own right. Thank you for all the great videos. Happy new year
Glad places like this exist. Normally old F1 cars get stuck in a house somewhere and never drive again. At least here they'll actually be able to do what they were designed to do. Plus they're straight up manufacturing new parts, which is awesome. Reminds me of how vintage 60s racers are kept maintained. Just imagine old GT1 cars and stuff having companies produce parts or straight up repairing a crashed car. One day they could probably make a complete replica.
As an F1 fan, i mean a true f1 fan and not one of those modern peeps that watches the netflix f1 nonsense, this is the content you're really frothing about. Could watch someone getting into the details of F1 cars, especially of the golden era (V10 era), for hours on end. Just so interesting. Absolutely love the content Ben. Keeping my fingers crossed for you, and also a bit for myself to be perfectly honest with you, that you're getting in one of these! I'd love to see it. Which one i don't care much to be fair but preferably one with a V10 of course.
#2 Ben. And James, who better than Ben to do some shake down laps?! Ben has proven that he can drive anything and everything. I learned a ton on this episode👍
Let Ben drive the F1 car please sir? Great episode Ben Completely engrossing and proper F1 tech talk. I think Jacques may have liked the push/pull shifting because it would be similar to a sequential system that he would have used in Indycar and Formula Atlantic.
Fascinating stuff truly is astonishing some of the work and ideas that go into these machines. Oh and James you best let him out in one! lol Common man be a legend James!
Interesting to hear the comment about whether the 1994 Benetton had traction control. I listened to a podcast recently with Willem Toet who worked for Benetton in 1994 and he said they had it. He explained the way they did it and why it was legal. It probably wasn’t as refined as previous systems but it was still better than nothing. They kept quiet about it because if they explained what they had and why it was legal, it would have been copied or banned. The podcast is called Material Evolution and it was in December 2021. It was really amazing to hear him admit it because everyone else in the team has denied it for the last 30 years!
I heard Gille Villeneuve had used the same configuration for the flappy paddles when he tested the original semi-automatic gearbox in the early 1980s, would be a cool nod to that if that's why Jacques ran it that way
I appreciate the engineering in the modern V6T's, but I am literally the V10 Generation and so this is as cool as it gets, I'd be giddy as heck wandering around there. TDF sound like they get to do some proper serious engineering, what an awesome company. I'm with James; Minardi were my team. Incredible tenacity, had a keen eye for talent, the definition of sportsmanship both on and off the track and celebrated any points like it was a championship win. Button's '04 BAR 006 would be my vote; nearly won a championship, all original F1 components, it's as close to the real deal as it gets outside of the actual teams/manufacturers.
If I had to choose one, I would say option 5 purely because of how modern the 2019+2020 front wing is which would allow him to experience as close to modern day aero, so more speed through corners if he chose to push it if allowed.
My pick would be anyone that you wont put into a wall. Having you do a commentary in one of those similar to the Tyrrell P34 but with a better in helmet mic setup would be amazing.
I dont know what is happening, but on RUclips for Samsung tv's the video stops at around 12min 30 mark on the Jordan cut scene video although audio continues, then forcing a complete restart of the tv. But works perfectly fine on web for windows (firefox)
The Williams for your obvious passionate connection with its driver. If not, the 04 BAR 006 for the rise of JB. The Minardi for its originality. There, sorted. Three for you to drive...😊
I just can't express how great is my respect to people who do their absolute best to preserve old technology for next generations in running order. And I don't care if it's coffee machines, game consoles, steam engines, diesel tractors, old BMWs, golden era japanese motorbikes from 70s, 1950s fighter jet or F1 car.
Fantastic video thank you! Would love more like this! Would be interesting to find out exactly why they went for a modified version of the 1.8T engine when they had the choice I'm guessing of anything they wanted? Is there something about the 1.8T that makes them particularly suited for it? Thank you 👌😀
Ben! c'mon man! YOU ARE THE STIG!!!!! the myth the legend the man! the freaking STIG!!! did you see the smile on his face when you asked if he would let you drive one of them? his face lit up!!! i'd say you've got a prettttty good shot at getting behind the wheel bud!!! 😎🏎 try and drive Jacque's Williams car! and with regards to the sound of the v10? there is a clip of Lewis Hamilton being interviewed at I think Indianapolis where a v10 car was ripping around the track, and Lewis stops in mid sentence and says "oh that sound. oh I miss that noise it's the best sound" or words to that effect... and I know everyone would agree.. the sound of the v10 at 19000 rpm was something out of this world, simply symphonic indeed!!!
For me, the Renault RS3C will always be the best... but from the best V10 season 2004 the BMW P84 is something special... Whatever you choose from this set will be a great choice and pleasure to watch Ben, but personally I would go with the Bar Honda, but without the original Honda engine, I would probably finally choose Williams ... :D
Heavily modified yes, on track, of the era it was the BMW Williams. The most powerful car of the era, and the McLaren MP4-20 which was less than 30 km/h slower than the Honda, but it did it on track, in race spec.
If the Stig wants to drive Jacques Villeneuve's car, then I say the Stig ought to drive Jacques Villeneuve's car.

It was really amazing to hear him admit it because everyone else in the team has denied it for the last 30 years!
I heard Gille Villeneuve had used the same configuration for the flappy paddles when he tested the original semi-automatic gearbox in the early 1980s, would be a cool nod to that if that's why Jacques ran it that way
Paddles in the 1980’s ? I dont think so
My mistake sorry, I believe it was a 1979 car that had been tested with an early version of the system@@BenCollinsDrives
Jordan - it has its original Puegeot powerpack....
The stig should drive the BAR Honda. Jensen button and the stig driving such an iconic car
If I had to choose one, I would say option 5 purely because of how modern the 2019+2020 front wing is which would allow him to experience as close to modern day aero, so more speed through corners if he chose to push it if allowed.
I think a test of the fleet is in order! Great to see the cars up close
1995 Jordon, and hopefully get Eddie Jordon on board also 🙏🏻
My pick would be anyone that you wont put into a wall. Having you do a commentary in one of those similar to the Tyrrell P34 but with a better in helmet mic setup would be amazing.
Don't watch F1 anymore, but this was a good watch, thanks! Drive that BAR.
I dont know what is happening, but on RUclips for Samsung tv's the video stops at around 12min 30 mark on the Jordan cut scene video although audio continues, then forcing a complete restart of the tv.
But works perfectly fine on web for windows (firefox)
Great channel Ben
Happy new year from Denmark 🎉
Ok you should go on acelerados run in theres circuit😊❤
The Williams for your obvious passionate connection with its driver. If not, the 04 BAR 006 for the rise of JB. The Minardi for its originality. There, sorted. Three for you to drive...😊
That whole era, the 90s through to the very early 2000's. Also TDF, doing the F1 Lord's work.
Please take the 1995 Jordan for a spin, love the every sponsor under the sun Jordan liverys of the early 90s!
The Jordan.
Ben, this was spectacular.
Thank you fella.
This is truly a great, intelligent video. Thank you!
The McLaren MP4-20 of 2005. You'd be lucky to manage a lap before an engine or hydraulic failure though
🫡 to the tdf guys keeping some of these old beauty's racing 👍🏻👏🏻
There's a bucket list bunch of cars right there. I vote for the one Villenueuve wrecked at Spa.
Fantastic video thank you! Would love more like this! Would be interesting to find out exactly why they went for a modified version of the 1.8T engine when they had the choice I'm guessing of anything they wanted? Is there something about the 1.8T that makes them particularly suited for it? Thank you 👌😀
Great episode, we need more of this
great insights and all worthy of being driven.. but has to the BAR Ben 🤗
Wow great video really interesting 👍👍
Ben!
Great video, I love the guy nearly said “affordable” but then choked on his words.
It's only fair for you to drive Ruben's car and break every one of his lap records.
Really interesting video, thank you. I'll pick Button's car because he is probably my second favorite f1 driver after Senna .
The 2004 BAR is one of the fastest cars in the world, hope you can drive buttons car!
Heavily modified yes, on track, of the era it was the BMW Williams. The most powerful car of the era, and the McLaren MP4-20 which was less than 30 km/h slower than the Honda, but it did it on track, in race spec.
2. BAR-Honda 006. The forgotten, best of the rest car from 2004 season dominated by the Ferrari F2004.
2; 5; & 6 is a good spread to show how the cars have changed over the years
I've seen that '98 Minardi and it sounds exactly as good as you'd think
The V10 Era cars had such soul. The cigarette advertising really helped with the team budgets, multiple cars per driver, no engine cap etc.
