I'm a French school teacher. Every year, I let my pupils discover some of his songs such as Chanson pour l'Auvergnat (beautiful !) or Les copains d'abord (classic !) Please do Le gorille ! ⚠️🦍🍆 I can't wait for your reaction of this peculiar one. 😇
your analyse is totally correct. Tonton Georges, tells us serious things/facts with lovely words and great humour. And all respecting poetology rules. His not only a poet or singer, he is a philosophy of life
I have always loved Brassens since I was a little girl, I even cried when I learned of his death (I was very young) because he was like the grandfather I didn't have, with his good face, his mustache, his pipe, his wisdom, the laughter in his eyes... Later I understood his songs and I loved him even more. He's one of the greatest, I still listen to him, I know his songs by heart. He comes from the south of France, hence the accent. He was an anarchist, anti-clerical, anti-death penalty, anti many things. but he loved his wife and his group of friends, whom he often talks about in his songs. A very wise and very human character. Who was not afraid to say his opinion and who had great poetry in his words.
You've just opened Pandora's box... This immense singer has so many songs, poems and creations. A very rich repertoire despite the minimalist aspect of orchestration ( 2 guitars, 1 basse most of the time)... And yeah so many songs still relevant today. I advice "Mourir pour des idées", "Les passantes", "Les oiseaux de passage", "Quand les cons sont braves", "Trompettes de la Renommée", "Supplique pour etre enterré à la plage de Sète"... And the humoristiques ones : "Le gorille", "La fessée", "A l'ombre des maris", "Mysoginie à part", "Le bulletin de santé".... you have content for several years.
@@hasturx1 True enough. Subtle since it's the morale of the song no but yeah I could have subtitued by "Tempete dans un bénitier ", "l'hecatombe", " La file indienne" even though these song have like a lot of Brassens song anti-clerical and anti-militarism (or just anti-establishement) themes. But Seriously, if we want to advice someone to listen to Brassens... Almost all his song are phenomenal by their text and composition ( He could only sing on 2 octaves but arrived to have such a variety of melodies).... It's impossible to narrow it to just a few!
Brassens, in addition to be an exceptionnal singer and music maker, was a simple man with a big heart that thought politics, police and rich people shouldn't exist. He was an incredible human being that some can call an "anarchist" in the "No state needed" form of the term (like Henry David Thoreau)
Bon travail. En plus du travail sur les mots et de sa musique qui n'est pas si simpliste qu'il peut le sembler. J'aime beaucoup le regard et le sourire de cet homme.
You might want to look into Coluche. He was a comedian known for his politically-engaged opinions, which eventually led him to run for presidency in the early 80s in France. Most of what he criticized back in the days is still up to date (although some names, dates and references might be hard for you to understand). He's also the founder of Les Restos du Coeur, a food bank that is still running (and sadly more required year after year) ever since he died in a bike accident in the mid-80s. If you're looking for one of the most iconic French celebrity, I'd say Coluche is on par with Brassens, Desproges, Brel, or Cabrel. They mastered using words like weapons, each in their own way!
He unfortunately died in 1981 if I remember correctly. As Pierre Desproges, one of his friends, said: "When Georges Brassens died, I cried. When Tino Rossi (another singer) died, I had two more noodles."😢

It seems that there was an inversion in the order of reactions. For this one you say that you don't know anything about this singer, and in the previous one that you do. Anyway it doesn't matter at all, the main thing is that you like him 👍
good choice !! one of the best anti-system songs "mauvaise ' as in bad reputation the name Brassens is to be pronounced with the s at the end (Brassensse) He was from Italian descent
When I was a young boy, I used to listen George Brassens when I tried to sleep. It was late 90's. My parents did the same in the 60's. And I'll probably put my kids to bed listening to George Brassens. George really been through the ages. If you see this, I suggest you to listen "Boby Lapointe - J'ai fantaisie". It's another French monument, sadly falling into oblivion. "J'ai fantaisie" is not the best-known song from Boby Lapointe, but he's used to playing with words and singing fast, so I think it's the one you'll understand most easily. Edit: "Framboise" from Boby Lapointe, is another masterpiece. Some puns, but with slower diction.
Hi I was born in sète in the south of France like Georges Brassens and he has so many great songs, some of them quite controversial for his time. Le gorille, les Copains d'abord ( mates first) but one that is absolutely brilliant for me is "Supplique pour être enterré sur la plage de Sète" I believe you'll like that one, funny and controversial . Over 7 minutes long, enjoy !
Hello "D"! Always happy to see your reactions by hearing the songs of this fabulous poet. Here's a short excerpt from an other song which also caused a scandal at the time : "Quand je pense à Fernande Je bande, je bande, Quand j'pense à Félicie Je bande aussi. Mais quand je pense à Lulu, Là, je ne bande plus, La bandaison Papa, Ça ne se commande pas !" "When I think of Fernande, I get a hard on, I get a hard on, When I think of Felicie I get a hard on too, But when I think of Lulu, then I don't get a hard on anymore, The "Hard-on-ness" Dad, you can't control it !" (Sorry for the last expression, but "Bandaison" is not easy do translate in English... 🤗)
nice reaction. for pronunciation you can use the Google Translate listening icon, same for Daniel Balavoine (by the way, pronunciation in French and English are quite similar).
Brassens is internationally well know there is Italians, Spanish, english.. etc covers, you should check "Joe Flood : The Bad Reputation (La Mauvaise Réputation)". Same song adapted by an US Brassens's fan guy, really nice cover. "Pomplamoose" made some cover too, There was an US Brassens's cover band too but i can't find them anymore on youtube..Anyway the Joe Flood covers are my favorites.
il avait écrit cette chanson suite a une condamnation quand il etait adolescent, a du sursis suite un vol de bijoux...c'est pour ça qu'il est parti a paris
For once, you actually pronounce the S at the end of Brassens. Yeah French is made to annoy English speakers on purpose 😂😂. He was a very close friend to Jacques Brel, it goes without saying.
This is perhaps his greatest song. Well done reacting to this.
