My grandma who came over from Spain used to pick off the ends of the branches of our camphor tree. She would sort of crunch the leaves a little bit in her hands, and then put the little branches in her cupboard "to keep bugs away". 😊
I think that's why I used to boil leaves years ago. It made the house smell nice, sort of a decongestant and those little fungus gnats. But someone said I was poisoning our lungs and I stopped. It's been like 20 years. No lung problems that I know of.
I've tried to see if it deters bugs by putting them both in containers and seeing if any bugs tried to get away from it and nothing happened.. they crawled on it as much as anywhere . maybe termites hate it ? mosquitos ? I dunno
Awesome info I have three of these on the property, they grow very fast and the worms in my worm bin seem to love their leaves as they are replicating profusely in them as a bedding! Thank you, I'm about to go make some tea!
Green Dean, can you please do more videos of wild edible tubers? In my opinion, those are the most interesting plants. I am ALWAYS interested in finding more edible tuber/rhizomes.
Very Informative video.....this tree grows like a weed in my backyard in North Central Florida.....looking forward to trying the tea....I also have Sassafras growing in the yard as well.....I use the wood to make hiking sticks because it is such a lightweight wood...thanks for the info!!!

Hi Green Deane, I love your vids and I was wondering if you knew anyone from your weeds community from Montreal Canada who could teach me your knowledge in classes or expeditions??? Thanks !
I was wondering if the wood could be used for smoking since it kinda had an eucalyptus/witch hazel/mesquite herbal smell but the internet says not to smoke food with the plant . Camphor , menthol and eucalyptus are used in Vick's Vapor rub .
I used to boil up some leaves to smell up the house. Until someone told me you're spreading poison in the air. I love the smell. I think it helps with congestion too.
well if your body's dull - then it'll invigorate it. But if you are already vigorous - then it'll be too much. It's about balance. For someone whose lungs are bad - it'll be helpful. For someone whose lungs are normal - it'll be hurtful. If your body's in an unnatural state - it tastes something unnatural to stabilize it.

i think i have this tree in the front yard her in orlando fl, now as a sapling ive been cutting them back as i thought it was just some pesky tall plant i crushed a leave they have a cinnamon smell to it. Cinnamomum camphora ? anyways i noticed a caterpillar on it a spicebush swallow tail which it will become its black and blue. and now i want to keep it for this reason.
Question? What is the plant to your right at 20 seconds onward, and time 8:23 at the end. The leaves seem to have many different shapes on the same plant.
@jazz61021 That's a young paper mulberry, Broussonetia papyrifera. Their leave shape varies greately from a young tree to an adult. I did a video on them.
the seeds seem find to eat - I eat those all the time - they have really no camphor-like qualities - but are the seeds toxic? I never saw any article say they are.
Behind you is a camphor tree with (what appears to be) skunk vine growing up it. Next to you is a young paper mulberry. Geeeez, invasive exotic central!!
I chew on the unripe fruit to get rid of my headaches, because of the camphor in it. Works better than any medicine. Not sure why you say the fruit isn't edible, as I eat the unripe ones (a small amount) and the seeds too? I'd imagine the seeds should be pretty edible - why not touch upon that? I mean it's related to avocado. I bet you're referring to the ripe fruit. I think the unripe fruit (I mean when it's green) is pretty similar to a leaf, as I chew that. I eat the twig that comes with the leaf, especially at the point where it's plucked, because it has an extra medicinal taste there!
@@vdekjEE of course it is - however I chew them if I have a headache and it takes my headache away. I mainly chew the leaves and green fruit, but sometimes the black fruit - it just isn't as camphorous as the green ones - so it's not as effective. if you really worry about poisons - eating the seeds seems to be the least camphorous part - but idk if it's toxic or not.
My chihuahua wont stop eating these berries!!!! Been over a week now, every day, and he's doing ok. Should I be worried? I dont think I could stop him.
maybe you're referring to the black berries. I doubt it'll be too much of a problem - however, the issue with the chemicals is that the issues show up years later - not just a week later.
I would have loved to try that, but I'm not comfortable with the risk. I likely would take too much because I like it or not enough out of paranoia. I fully understand exactly what to do, based on this video, which leaves nothing to question. However, if I was to try it, I would rather someone like you, prepare it for me. You also taught me that Brazilian Pepper is not the same "pink peppercorns" that you can buy at the grocery store. (Although some people can consume Brazilian Pepper corns, some people have very bad reactions to it, so I won't be trying Brazilian Pepper either). I'll stick to many of your other videos for safer food sources and just store this knowledge in my brain for survival situations, not for being adventurous.
I eat the brazilian pink peppercorns all the time and I believe they are what you'd see at the grocery store if you see pink peppercorns. They're just not the black peppercorns normally seen. If you don't like them when they're pink - eat them when they're green - it's magical. Just if you're worried - avoid the seed - it's very powdery. Instead eat the fruit.

Just today I have realized we have Camphor tree on our new house! Surprise, Surprise. It's 40year old tree. We live in San Jose, California!
Can you send me some of those fruits once they are ripened ?
We have camphor tree plus 50 ft high 5 trunks, it frosted all over a month ago. is it an evergreen will it come back in spring, looks pretty bad now
I love the smell of Camphor tree
Love this tree, it grows all over the place in c. fla. I call it the VicksVapoRub tree!
Thank you for this video! I look forward to learning more from you & all the Lord has provided, from the Alabama Gulf Coast region.
thank you for what you do. ive been cooped up inside all winter in the middle of the city. this is very empowering education.

Because of the strong smell, could boiling the leaves be used to repel mosquitoes?
No yes
I enjoy watching the videos over and over. One of these days hope to be an expert. Nice to refresh my memory. Thank you, thank you////
Thanks for the positive comment.
@edv177 It is naturalized Virginia south and west to Texas, then California, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. It could be elsewhere intentionally.
Now I know what to do with all my baby camphor seedlings under my 50 foot camphor tree!! Thanks :)

It is used to smoke one particular dish in China. I used to burn it for heat my fireplace without any bad effects.

I still have a couple Camphor trees but they are dying because of the drought here in Texas and from being shaded-out by the Pin oak trees nearby.
"Oh, those Katydids! They're edible you know." I don't know why that made me smile.
