    "Learn the actual underlying technologies, before learning abstractions. Don't learn jQuery, learn the DOM. Don't learn SASS, learn CSS. Don't learn HAML, learn HTML. Don't learn CoffeeScript, learn JavaScript. Don't learn Handlebars, learn JavaScript ES6 templates. Don't just use Bootstrap, learn UI patterns. When getting your start, you should fear most things that conceal complexity." - Kyle Simpson
    Found this quote from "You Don't Know JS" book series. Stefan, I think you would agree as well to this quote.

      Yep. Trying to learn a library or a framework before really understanding the underlying language will slow you down.

    finally someone is not saying "the language you should learn in 2017" is python or Javascript. thumbs up!

    As a retired pro boxer going into software development, all your fighting analogies are gold to me, I simply cannot find it anywhere else, and I am forever grateful for all this content, just wanted to say thank you

    Totally agree that software fundamentals are very important . Unfortunately , most of the software professionals is done based on recent in-demand technical frameworks and platform.
    Do you know Angular or AWS ? Hiring Managers don't focus on fundamental software engineering skills . A real software professional who have good fundamental understanding can learn any new programming language, framework or platform.

    Nice vlog Stef. Mastering the basics might take time but is worth it in the long run. Thanks for preaching this truth all the time.

    Hello Stef, great video as alwayas :) I have one question.. I started programming last year but realised that it was something i could see myself doing as job as well. I Learned basic C# and Sql , and thinking about starting with JS and PHP(most in-demand and easisest to find a job here in my country). What would you suggest me to do, start learning JS and PHP or stick with C#? Thank you and keep up the good work

    • @StefanMischook
      @StefanMischook  7 лет назад +3

      Thanks. If the demand is in PHP .... follow the money! That said, what you learned in C# programming will speed you on your way in PHP programming. Methods are methods, variables are variables, objects are objects regardless of the language. Yes, there are differences, but the hard part is the general principles ... once you have those, it gets easy.

    Stef, I really want to get into WordPress theme development. I have a particular niche I want to specialize in, what are the ways you can identify if a particular niche is worth venturing into or not?
    Also what is your general opinion on WordPress theme development these days? Is it still a viable option for programming newbies in 2017?

    Good day Stefan, what's your opinion on Business Informatics? I'm currently on that study programme on my university and would like to know what your thoughts are on the combination of IT and economics and is it more future proof than just computer science? My professor said that after I graduate I'm ready to integrate human, organizational, and technical skills in real-life contexts and will have no problem finding a suitable job, such as: Business analyst, Enterprise architect, ICT project manager, Software production manager, Business consultant, ICT consultant, Software entrepreneur, Information analyst. Do you have any insight in these jobs and how relevant they are today? Thanks

      "... integrate human, organizational, and technical skills in real-life contexts " I like this in principle. The thing I would suggest doing is to start doing job searches now ... see what's out there.

    you're right most of the youtube videos don't teach you anything they just walk through the code

    • @StefanMischook
      @StefanMischook  7 лет назад +2

      Yep. That's because properly teaching is much harder than doing code walk-throughs.

      Thanks for the response, over here in Brazil we have some issues sending money outside, randomly paypal or my credit card wont work because of reasons only jesus knows, Udemy offer other cash payment options that work 100% of the time thats the reason I asked. BUT, I may have found a way to pay using a pre paid credit card via paypal. I will try again in two days.

    Very few employers think that way though. they all want the skill of the day. Even the version matters in some cases. Truly sad.

    • @StefanMischook
      @StefanMischook  7 лет назад +3

      True. But the key to learning is getting the basics down, then look for the local jobs are, and learn the most in demand lib ... which you will do in record time if you know the basics.
