  • Hello folks, welcome to our RUclips homesteading journey!
We live in Central Victoria, Australia, on an off-grid property where we grow our food, raise animals and live lightly on this earth.
In this video I show you my continued work at keeping the birds off my vegetable gardens and I let you know what I'm planting in August in our cool region, Cold Zone 9b and Heat Zone 4.
I hope you enjoy watching and you're enjoying some gardening this week.

Good newsy video thank you . Re the frosts - you probably know , but the “ urban legend “ has it that there will be no more frosts in Victoria ( Aust ) after the Melbourne Cup which is held on the first Tuesday in November , and over the years I have found that correct . Last summer virtually all my sweet corn cobs ( about 60 ) were eaten by rats , it was , however a Blessing that they didn’t eat any other plants . We moved to a small farm which was originally settled in 1860s just north of Bendigo a couple of years ago and it is Heaven on earth - beautiful weather and terrific soil so we have been truly Blessed .

Hello! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Bendigo is a bit warmer than we are here and cause we are so open we get frosts most years until mid or late November. I’m always hoping that the no frosts after cup day will work for us though!
Sounds like you have a beautiful place. So sorry that rats ate your corn cobs, they must have been tasty and that’s why they didn’t eat anything else. I hope you get some corn this year! 🤞 Thank you for watching! Amy 🌻

Hi there, I live in the Northern Country, about 15 km east of the Mallee. I have a 20-acre Permaculture farm, Zone 9B. Rats were awful here, last year. There are still a few hanging around, but the problem was mostly solved by obtaining a pair of cats. There are thousands of cockies around here, but they are not as destructive as your's. This is probably because we live in a Eucalyptus Forest, so there's a zillion other things, other than my garden, for them to think about!
Swamp wallabies are a big worry, they love kale and other forbs (broad leaf crops such as lettuce) but I have figured out how to build a fence to exclude them. It's a big job building it, but well worth it!
I have been planting Cos Lettuce, Broad Beans, Lucerne (I have a horse) and Walking Stick Kale. I also built a Shade/Green House, I'm using it to grow ornamentals but also planted some bananas there as well, and will also perhaps grow some Malay Dwarf Coconuts in it, because I have seen people growing them in Zone 9B, in Northern Florida.
I have also been putting in loads of mature trees, including Tagasaste, European Elms, Chinese Elms, Grapes, a Satsuma Plum and a hazelnut tree, and also some Nashi trees and a Plum Tree that I germinated from seeds I got in a food parcel (fruit). There are also more baby apple trees and baby tagasastes in my propagation area, and they will be planted out when they are big enough.
When I got my Covid Stimulus Cheques back in 2021, I basically blew the lot on fruit and nut trees, including Olives, Almonds, a Peachcot, European Plums, Jap Plums, Figs, Apples and so on and so forth. These are all mostly now really good size trees and should make a nice crop this year. I commented to my adult sons that I wanted to make a jungle, and they replied "It looks like that's what's happening, here!" Other people might have bought flat screen TVs or gone to Crown or on a Holiday, but I fed my own personal addiction (gardening) and I know that one day, it will feed me!
    P. S. I subbed, liked and hit the notifications bell. All the Best!
    P. P. S. I also have a YT channel where I post videos from my garden and farm, sometimes, so feel free to subscribe to it, if you like!

OMG cockies! I am the crazy woman who chases them off with a large super soaker water pistol. My husband laughed yesterday as when he picked up the super soaker the cockies all flew away without having to spray at them lol I have all but 2 of our beds covered in the field because they just masacar everything here. My first ever vegetable garden I used plants from Bunnings and when I got home from work that afternoon they had pulled out every single seedling and had eaten all of their roots and dumped the tops all over the paddock. We have had to grow every single thing here now covered so that they don’t touch them. Horrible rotten things. I’d rather have the kookaburras every single day, we see them every now and again and hear them in our trees but the cockies are here in numbers over 30 at a time so the poor kookaburras just stay away. Good luck with your garden. The Bunnings netting is exactly what we use and it lasts a really really long time :)

In the NWR of Vic so understand the challenges. Harvesting lots of swede, lettuce, rocket . Cabbages, peas, raddish, carrots, onions coming on well. I used that white bird netting you showed as my frost cover only and it did a pretty good job. I only garden in IBCs at the moment but will expand out like you have shown. Would love to sow plenty of potatoes. I will plant tomato seeds in tin cans on the windowsill, like my grandparents did to get an earlier start than last year lol😅. Hi Amy from Central North Island, NZ. We seem to have a similar zone. Frost of -2C this morning and can't plant out anything tended until mid-November and even then with fingers crossed. Have had frosts in December, January and February in unusual years. I have planted tomatoes seeds indoors and about to pot the first ones up. Very exciting. I recognize several of the tomato varieties that I am also growing. I have ordered my potatoes but will be a while before they arrive. I couldn't get Pink Fir Apple as I had wished. I would be interested in your opinion on them at some point to see if they are worth hunting for next year. All the best.

Hello! I love NZ and have family over there. Always wondered whether the frost was similar to here, but frost after November is uncommon here, although I’m sure some years there could be a frost in December.
I shall let you know how the Pink Fir Apple potatoes go and taste.
      Thanks for watching!

Sunshine, sunnies, sun hat and bees - you're 1000 km south of me and having much better weather! Would love to hear your opinion on the different potato varieties once you get your (hopefully) super bumper crops. I'm growing purple sprouting broccoli for the first time and I'm amazed at how unexpectedly large the plants are - I hope I like the taste. I'm slightly worried because no bug or slug has had even the tiniest munch on the plants unlike the regular broccoli.

I hope you get some better weather soon! I shall definitely be doing videos on potatoes at all stages and comparing them, so shall let you know what they are like.
Sounds like your sprouting broccoli is very healthy. The slugs and bugs attack plants that are calcium deficient, so sounds like the soil is well balanced where you’ve planted the sprouting broccoli. I love the taste of it and hope you do too.

Curious which zone map you use. I am in NW Tasmania. Gardening Aus says we are in the cool temperate zone. So does DOM. Frosts are usually done by mid to late September. Rule of thumb plant tomatoes after the first weekend in October. Other maps put Tasmania (Hobart is the guideline - totally different climate than the NW however Tassie is listed a zone 9b. The NW tends to be milder and more even in temperature, rainfall and wind.

I used the zone map on plantmaps.com but also found our zone on Diggers website too. I’m in Central Victoria and we are colder than Melbourne, which used to be cool region but is now temperate. In Melbourne they say to plant your tomatoes out on cup weekend, but out here we sometimes wait a bit longer. Last year I planted some tomatoes out earlier under frost cloth and they did really well. It’s amazing how the climate is so different only an hour away from here. Sounds like it’s the same in Tassie.

Thank you for the link to the plant map. I live in Inverell, northern NSW and we get -4 at times in winter but the map shows -1. Good to know for future reference I am between 9 b and 10 a. I love that I stumbled on an Australian based channel. Thank you for taking the time to film.

@@karenicox9026 thank you for watching and joining me here! We can get down to -3 here as well but I think it’s an average that they work on. I feel like we have harsher weather on our property compared to our neighbours, so it can vary within the area you are. So I take the zones as a guide, but you definitely learn more about your own plot from observation over the years.

First time here, and first time sowing flower and veggie seeds! I have to admit to feeling daunted at the prospect, being a first-timer. I started collecting seed online last year, but ran out of steam with sowing them and resorted to buying veggie seedlings from Bunnings! 🫣 This year I’m a bit more determined, and started purchasing my ‘setup’ earlier this year - things like seed storage containers (the large plastic craft ones from Spotlight or K-mart hit the spot!), seedling trays, grow lights etc.) My plan is to concentrate on sowing perennials for my garden, and only sow the veggies we actually like to eat, as opposed to growing just for growing sake. In typical fashion though, I’ve created extra work for myself with lists of seeds and instructions for every. single. variety. seed I’m planning on growing! Why does it have to be sooo complicated with lots of overthinking for someone like me?! 😂 So, I’m determined to do my own seedling mix, following the great Monty Don’s advice, but have yet to summon up the courage to just get it started! At this rate it’ll be next year before I’m ready, and by that time, much of the seed could be useless. I’m encouraged to see what you’re achieving in your patch, and your determination to push through against the elements and wildlife. It’s inspiring. 🙏🥬🌶️🥕👩‍🌾 Oh yes, East Gippsland here!

Hello! Thanks for being here and watching. I always recommend first-time growers to start small. Start with raising one or two veggies and expand from that. Your idea of starting with perennials sounds great, I’d recommend doing that. Then you’ll have plants that give year after year and you’ll get something from your hard work.
Don’t worry about the ‘expiration date’ on your seed packets. They will last for a longer time than that date. It’s just protocol for companies to put a date on seeds.
It’s easy to get overexcited and want to plant out so much more than you can manage. Believe me, I do it every year! 😂
Starting with the veggies you already eat is perfect. Also things that are easier to grow will be encouraging for you. I might do a video on this soon. Good luck with raising your seedlings! 🌻

Hi, I'm in the same boat, I buy way too many seeds, & overthink everything to the point of being overwhelmed.
Biggest & best advice is nourish the soil, aged manures, compost, etc that will feed the plants.
      Soil first.
      Good luck 👍
