Amazes me that the government talks a lot about sustainability, yet turns a huge blind eye to tonnes of brand new building material being ripped out and put into landfill each year! Also urgently need to make inspectors independent of builders and accountable when approving these schmozzles.

This is what happens when waterproofers can be anyone doing it. Waterproofing should be recognised as a trade and all waterproofers should be accredited and have proper training like I did. It was 3 months of training I did before I did my first waterproofing job on my own. It is the single most important step in wet areas and external preparations on buildings and homes that will be exposed to water, moisture,or the elements.

I think that anything outside of basic labouring like digging a hole or moving wood should be a year supervised especially something as vitally important as waterproofing.
Some of the young fellas I worked with/trained at a boat hire would absolutely not be competent at such an important job after 3 months.

A lot of what’s not stated is this , a lot of builders risk manage specific trades like tiling , and they are responsible to warrant work to builder not always but a lot , then not knowing basics occurs ? I been in jobs were the tiler doesn’t even prime walls for tile glues and waterproofing which cost money so I won’t do attitude and possibly do not no ! Reason is if you do a trade in tafe , each job like tiling is on proficiency and competence before you pass , honestly the industry skills are told to upskill not down skill in paid money licence without testing knowledge , it’s this easy , go do labour ing and take pictures of others work in all trades then network to find a Matt John’s RPL provider pay cash tick the boxes then passed a tradie ? Wtf ! Here’s another example ! I want boat licence , go pass test on computer then need to do 100 hr , find a sign me off person and pay and have a license ! The education system is so manipulated to provide shortages in trades , I love seeing people having a go and trying to do the best job with what’s been provide , pride in one’s works lost to old school tradies unfortunately .

The fact they didn’t slap some paint to cover the graffiti before putting up the fence says it all. Shamozzle!
They should have an independent supervisor inspect the site every 3 weeks or so to catch any non compliance before they go too far. That would save on insurance claims and law suits in the future, fines should be attached. That way the builder has a direct financial reason to do the job properly, rather than rely on insurance which only results in higher premiums for us all. If they can’t do it properly then they shouldn’t be in business.

It is common with an independent supervisor in Scandinavia. He/she will often do an update on a weekly basis and especially for each section during the construction.
Ive seen 20 windows that was put in place with expanding foam (isnt uncommon and is does work) but the builders managed to smear it on the frames of the windows. The windows were powder coated so they all had to be taken out and sent to a painter, since you couldnt just use a brush as that wouldnt leave as nice a finish as the coating. Oh and one of the apprentices went inside the house wearing his workboots just after all floors were done - he scuffed some of them juuuuust enough that the supervisor wanted it rectified and new flooring put in.
It can be strict - often very - but I get it especially for the visual things. If the customer pays for a high quality very pretty floor you cant handover something thats scuffed already.
I feel so disgusted about how these houses in Australis is being built and how insane it is that people just sort of go with it.

I watched a house being constructed locally here in Cranbourne, It was just a small house in a small yard, yet it took them well over a year to build it, cause at each stage the builders had to go back and fix issues that should not have been their to begin with. Flooding/drainage, leaking roofs, guttering, black mould (multiple times) and many other issues like not even following the blue prints correctly. All these problems were all found and had to be dealt with before the occupants even got to move in.
This example did not give me great confidence in the quality of new homes being built today.

All of the issues here have got nothing to do with cost cutting, would have costed nothing extra to do the job right. Its purely inadequate supervision of the work done by tradies and labourers who dont know how to do the job correctly. Shouldnt be up to inspectors to tell them how do it, site supervisors should be picking up on the basic mistakes well before the work has progressed too far and its too difficult to correct the mistakes. Seems like the same mistakes are being repeated over and over, on job sites everywhere, but they aren't doing it intentionally, they simply don't know how do it properly, and no one is showing them the right way.

Encouragement for sustainable building and yet council planners pass plans for this shite! Considering Australia's heat issues, What happened to protective eaves, & more, verandahs all around housing builds, providing all round shade? Who is the "building" company of this horror? Where was the supervision? How, and by whom, were stages passed for the Occupancy Certification? And what about the remediation of the 50cm Polystyrene Walls? And glad to see repair works being carried out but as a homeowner gone through similar, once built with so little care in the first place, I personally had no trust in letting the same builder even step back on site! Australian building has become a joke! Deregulation, or allowing the Industry to regulate building itself, via the Building Commission, who performed so woefully, simply rebranded to the VBA to hide all of their incompetence and at times, deliberate obstruction of help to homeowners, obviously has not worked! The Government must step in. And the legal guy speaks of the Building Warranty Insurance, but set up as a last resort and rarely covers enough, for instance, nothing cosmetic, nor pay out as should. Firstly, people are forced to mount costly fights for remediation or compensation through VCAT, generally with costly consultant's reports and legal help, a nice earner for lawyers. Can cost $70- $100000 to run a hearing whilst dealing with a badly built home, which may not be liveable, yet still either paid for, or generally with a mortgage, so maybe forced to rent as well. And then, 4 years later, the Building Warranty Insurance firm told me within their T&C's wouldn't pay out after I had a winning decision against the cowboy builder in VCAT! And that's if the building conpany has even paid the BWI, that consumers pay for in the build cost. Again, require some government administered Insurance scheme. All requested via several collected complaints to the State Liberal Grubberment under Tim Baillieu, and Matthew Guy as Planning Minister (Note there is no Building Minister), and all the harrowing stories of the financial, physical, relational and mental health harm to consumers buried. And then Labor imstead of helping has only made seeking redress harder! Do Not Build Here! At best, best reputable kit home.
