    グレイスからの役に立つアメリカ大学生活のアドバイスもあるよ!
Ryosuke and I met during his Junior year of college - while he was studying abroad at my college near Philadelphia. Ours was a whirlwind romance (yay) and we have tons of fond memories of our time together in school.
In any case, these were Ryosuke's bits of advice to anyone (especially Japanese students) who want to study abroad in America!
    アメリカ留学に行く人や興味がある人に少しでも役に立つといいなぁ~

This was so cute! The 'free candy' might work if you don't have nefarious intentions and are only using it as an icebreaker. I married the boy who was going door to door offering all the girls chocolate covered Oreos.

I love watching your videos because I always have warm feeling everytime I watch them. Ryosuke is the generous goofy but hardworker and Grace is the loving smart women which make you guys a great couple. I wish I got those advice regarding study abroad before I did since I can totally related to those experiences that you guys said. I especially wish I knew the tips Grace delivered. Every tips that they gave is really helpful so I will try to tell my friend whoever thinking of studying abroad! Thank you very much for uploading cute loving videos! Hope we can meet up in Tokyo sometimes!

The biggest piece of advice I can give is to join a club! When I studied abroad in Argentina, that's how I met almost all my Argentine friends! Most schools have choirs, bands, intramural sports teams, and academic clubs, so find one that interests you and attend it regularly! I joined a choir and made a few friends I'm still in contact with today. It's really worth it!

    • @JoacoMono

JoshSaysStuff Well, actually here in Argentina the best way to make friends is making jokes, making people laugh, an talking a lot. Mostly being interesting in any way :D

This is all really great advice, especially joining a community. When I first went to college I felt so lost in the sauce, but joining the theater (as I had in highschool) brought me around people that I things in common with. I think it's awesome that you both have visited each others countries - such well rounded views!

Clubs and study groups are also a good way to make friends. I made a lot of friends before a big test in one of my classes. We studied together and got to know each other better. Sometimes making a class buddy is as easy as just turning to the person next to you and commenting on the class. I'm an introvert so I know this stuff can be hard sometimes it helps to find an extrovert to hang onto. (gateway friendship lol)

lol I love it "you're not stupid, you're just special". But seriously Ryosuke comes off as silly and childish, but some of his jokes are really cleve like in this video he totally comitted to the "everyone was coming up to me and i was a star" Grace *quizzical look* "...in my head".

I have a friend from Japan that goes to my school in America. She was obsessed with cream cheese and bagels because that is expensive in Japan. She gained so much weight that she told me that she couldnt fit into any of her pants.
Also about the topic of making friends, when I moved to Japan I also found in very difficult to make friends. My advice for that is to just stop caring about what others think. That sounds stupid and a lot easier than it sounds but I found that just being myself attracted so many more people than trying to please everyone by changing my personality. I think your natural personality will attract people that are similar. I think that is the first step to making friends before doing the things that Ryosuke and Grace recommended. I think what they said is great advice!!

  • @Coffee_is_ready

talking in class vs. talking to you professor. do both. talking to your professor does not replace talking in class. a good and safe place to learn to talking front and with others. you need to get out of your comfort zone. i like grace's suggestion with preparing a contribution. be considerate to your professor and go to their office hours when you want to talk to them. they have other duties beside teaching. but do talk tp them from time to time and not onlu to complain about grades.

Thats how I made many of my friends was going to meals with people on my floor. And by "going" I mean they saw me alone in the dining hall and rushed me over to their table before I even had a chance to grab a plate. After that we did everything together. :D

I constantly go up to people and just start talking to them. If you are from another country, you KNOW I will want to be your best friend. I had to change schools recently and I was really sad because I had made sooo many friends within a year. :(
    I love my friends. :(

I'm also a super shy person and the way I made friends in college was by getting the biggest dorm room available. Since we lived together we were forced to interact with each other at least a little bit. Out of five roommates in two years, I made good friends with two of them and only disliked one.
And once you make your first friend, it's usually easy to make more friends with their friends. : )
Americans *are* friendly, but you have to put yourself in a situation where they have a good reason to talk to you.

I agree with Grace, the easiest way to make friends in college is to say, "Hi, how are you?, how has your day been so far? ...etc." And you just do small talk like that everyday and you get people to open up like that. :)

Thanks for sharing this! I go to a college that has a huge Japanese exchange student population and this helped me understand them more. The class participation problem explanation really helped me. I remember having a class with a bunch of Japanese students in my group (we had to do a small project together every class) and it was so hard to get them to talk! They also would never raise their hand in class, and sometimes outright ignored the teacher if they were called upon. I always thought it was a language problem, but I guess the class structure must have been very different for them.

I really liked your advice for making friends in college and it has come in prefect timing for me, I am going to university soon in England (I'm from Ireland) and its something I'm terrified about especially because I am rather socially awkward but I am also starting in grade 2 so it is an already established class who will have made friend groups, so that's my challenge. Both of your ways to make friends have been useful (I'm not really sure if there is activities I can join as it is a specialised university but I will try Ryosuke) Thank You! :)

This was amazing advice, especially with making friends, something I've always struggled with. I've not been to a four year school yet, only community college and technical school and thus my schedule is very different from living on campus (I didn't want to be swamped by student loans...especially since I've now changed my major).
However, asking about going to lunch might work for at work. I'm usually shy and eat by myself...but...I also often want to be by myself so I can read. Eek...I need to learn to find a balance. I don't talk a lot though. I usually sit and listen to discussions quietly rather than jumping in them, mainly because I have nothing to add but I don't mind hearing others speak. Even when people do sit near me, I speak just enough to let people know I'm friendly and nice, but...I'll usually realize I don't have much to say and will return to reading my Kindle app on my phone...or fanfiction, lol. I...don't think I'm that interesting of a person. Hm. I'd mainly like people to hang out with after work, where we can do something fun and that will show more of who I am :)

Consulting with teachers or professors is the thing that helped me the most during my exchange year in the states! And since the teacher might mention about you during the class, students in the class will probably be interested in you and will ask some questions, then there you go! You've got some friends and a teacher to rely on! Anyway, that's what I did and also "free candy" worked very well, my friends loved Hi-chew and weird flavored Kit Kat from Japan haha

+Texan in Tokyo Oh, we switched! Were you in America during the earthquake? I went to Japan right after it and our school started late. Did you ever take a class with Ashmore sensei? He was the kind of fat foreigner teacher who taught classes about Anime/Manga and he also had a "Japanese traditional Performing Arts" class. What about Christian Etzrodt? He used to always go out for yakitori with his students. I miss AIU a lot. :)

+Candace Graue Ryo-chan was at AIU?! That came as a huge surprise to me as well :o I took Ashmore sensei's class for his last semester. Unfortunately, he already left AIU and now teaches at an university in Yamanashi prefecture.

I guess it really depends on what major and university you choose concerning how much discussion there will be in class. A lot of my classes had quite a bit of discussion, but participation was almost never a part of the score.

I wanna see a picture of chubby Ryosuke, cause I can't imagine it at all, haha!
This was good advice, especially about how to participate in class. I teach at a high school here in Japan and I always try to warn students who are going on an exchange about that, but I think they don't believe me until they really experience it :P
Finally, I just wanna say your makeup and nails in this video look great, Grace! Plus, the top you're wearing really makes your eye colour pop!

Thanks! I got my nails done by myself~ yaaay

Grace. Where were you when I started college and in high school?! ;-; I could have used that advice about writing questions down before class. :( Hey at least it will help me later on in the future. :) You are super sweet along with Ryosuke. I love you both so much and I hope one day I get to meet you both. :)

I actually did make a lot of friends in my Japanese dorm by bringing a ton of Ghiradelli chocolates from San Francisco and giving them out to people at random, so it might not be terrible advice as long as you don't spray paint it on the side of your windowless van.

In England the whole friends thing is very much similar to what Ryoske pictured. Or at least it is in my school. I think it mostly depends on what area of a country you go to. I know that applies for things like bullying. Where bullying is mostly non-existent where I live, I know in the deprived areas of London it's not like that.

I've heard that sarcasm isn't as popular in Japan so I was wondering if Ryosuke had to get used to that?

at around 6:20 ish, they talk about how Americans don't walk up to you randomly and become friends instantly. That's how I made my highschool friend. Literally just: "hey, you! Your in my physics class! Let's be friends!" in my head "I don't want to be lonely just go with it O.O". We are good friends to this day. :)
