I raced Golf MK1's for many years and have done many 1000's of laps on the Kyalami circuit. I have never seen such brilliant car control, such absolute commitment to a corner, superb choice of line in and exit out of a bend on a road like this. This guy reminds me of Senna at Monaco and Peter Brock at the Bathurst 1000. It is easy to learn a lap of a track a few km's log buy doing hundreds of laps, you can almost do it automatically after many laps, but to tackle this road, with all its twists and turns, and do such an incredible race is absolutely remarkable. I would think in the right car he could do a sub 7 minute in a street-legal vehicle on the Nordschleife ! Hats off...
I have watched this video so many times. Its so satisfying to see the perfect balance of this car when its flying around corners and the rear end is just coming around so nice

The mark 1s are famous for it stock, they lift off oversteer, that combined with that beautiful steering and twin cam makes for an attack dog of a car.
I agree, right on the bleeding edge tires slipping just enough in that grey area of not quite full on grip racing and not full on drifting...is incredible to watch.
I think he counts on that rear to slip a little and he reads it very well. Perfectly comfortable with that cars behavior and it makes him confident. Natural talent for sure combined with really good setup. Car is very balanced (for FWD).
I have a feeling someone is no longer singing that tune. VW has ruined the Mark 8. Maybe they will lead the electric market soon enough, but right now cost cutting has made their cars junk again.

Don't knock the car , roll cage etc. Just dwell on his skill and commitment because there's tons there . Its guys like this that make the difference. Sure one day something might happen but in the meantime its just awesome. And he's shared it with us to enjoy, not criticise. I now admire anyone that gets to the start line. Its an incredible effort but when you see this level of skill laid over it, its humbling.
A lot of people never drive their cars hard so never get the brakes and tyres up to temperature properly. Take your average family saloon to a track and do a few HARD laps you will be amazed how good they are today. Now imagine that setup lowered, boosted and on racing slicks and with camber, spring rate and track width adjusted, ceramic brakes etc. NOW you are into "better than sex" type fun, and the levels of grip are immense.
This guys an amazing driver, at the limit and beyond, awesome video thank you, I used to autocross a rabbit GTI in SCCA years ago, so this is great to see.

If you go off here (almost anywhere) you're done! Great motor build, awesome to see it's still N/A! I love turbo'd MK1's and 2's, but the powerband on this must be awesome. Sounds like it's always ON! Great work
