Two Thai boxers, fresh from their victories in the Atlanta games, have given their Olympic medals away.
The medals were presented to the King of Thailand as a commemorative gift for his fiftieth anniversary on the throne.
The sporting heroes were honoured by the monarch as a credit to their country.
Gold medallist Somluck Kamsing and bronze medallist Vichai Rachanont, still flush with their Olympic boxing success, were granted an audience with His Majesty the King at the Chitralada Palace on Saturday evening.
The King praised the Thai boxing team and told them they deserve recognition for an historic sporting achievement which has enhanced Thailand's reputation abroad.
The monarch rewarded both Somluck and Vichai with a copy of his latest work of translation - the Mahajanaka - and a gold pendant, once the two had handed over their Olympic medals.
All boxers taking part in the Atlanta Games had promised to bring back any medals they won as a gift to His Majesty the King as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations for the 50th anniversary of his accession to the throne.

I admire King Rama IX of Thailand. Not only a King, he is also an engineer of agriculture who helped Thai people a lot with their lives. He deserves the love and the worship of his people. From Vietnam with love! I will visit Thailand again. Feels like a second home for me.

This is a very great honor for all sporter. Actually, instead of this very first Olympic gold medal of Thailand achieved by Somluck Kamsing, King Bhumibol rather than keep those medals, His Majesty the King gave all of them back to each sporter who achieved them from the Olympic Games.

This might seem bizarre to non-Thais but to present the Olympic medal to the King in return for a new medal from the King is a much much greater honor to these men, and will be heirlooms in for their entire family.
Besides this is just a ceremony. The King gave the medals back to them anyway. AND not to mention that it was their decision to present His Majesty with the medals to begin with.

There are many dumbasses in comment saying it’s wrong or stupid to bow to the king. It’s an ancient tradition; Kings are said to be reincarnated gods. There’s no bad and good in this tradition; they do not get penalized or anything, at least during the reign of King Bhumibol. In that case, atheists would laugh at you if you believe in god. No disrespectful or hate speech, just to show difference in culture, religion, etc. You do not expect every countries to remain like westerns. Respect everyone, culture, tradition.

Wake up, your god does not exist and the bible is collection of myths and fairy tales. Your legendary Jesus, whose story is 90% fictional, is long dead.
