Ditto to Mr Factotum, thank you.
Why did you not reduce the centre in the lathe instead of setting it up on the mill?

Thanks Bernie. Great question, the reason was the bolt fixing which held the wheel on the mandrel blocked access and the mill was close at hand. There is no reason that it couldn’t be completely undertaken on the lathe, just needed another workholding setup say a 4 jaw chuck and shims to protect the part.

Thank you for the great walk-through and very nice job. I very much appreciate you walking through the form tools and jig. Is there a preference with the flat sheet vs round stock to create the blanks? Having trouble finding premade 3in wheels here in the states so I am going to have a go at it myself. I am a hobby machinist and have a pretty small manual lathe so concerned with the multiple replication process for quality identical wheels for rolling stock.

Hi William, Flat plate vs round stock just comes down to availability in my opinion, also your ability to part off or cut the blanks with the equipment you have available. On quality of replication you can always make more so just try a couple and see how you go as you go you can always fail and try again it’s only metal. This was my first time making them and ended up with a matched set I was happy with after a bit of practice and one or two that didn’t make the cut. Good luck.

@9:30, Why wouldn't you simply face off the hub to the desired thickness and save a machine change?
