Pavlov is truly relevant here considering the way you respond to right-wing dogwhistles!

This discussion was excellent and timely! In a culture where hate the sin but love the sinner is steeped with grace but lacks truth, this principle has cause us to fail miserably at setting the true example of Jesus’ ministry. I too struggle sometimes with knowing how to practically apply righteous boundaries within relationships with others regardless of their standing with God or not. What does it look like to hate sin, hate sinners but also to love them as well?

Does it depend on the situation or are we at a point where men need to fight (“metaphorically”) no matter what the circumstance? How much do we risk in regard to our jobs? When I look around at the world today, I have to ask myself, will the eternal hell be much more evil than what we Christians have permitted the earth to become in our time? Remember, hell will be populated by the same sinners we allow to corrupt God's world today, along with thousands of years of accumulated enemies of God.

I am also a mother of three boys. So ive never had girls in my family to relate to, but ive always been very feminine. I just had to figure out what that looked like. But i feel conflicted about my hatred because i think that Jesus said if you hate your brother in your heart, youve committed murder. And ive never ever heard a pastor say we can hate people. Ive heard we can hate sin and in my brain i think that if i haye sin i hate the one who participates in sin, even myself i hate when i sin! Were an active duty military family and mover ever 2-3 years so i dont necessarily have a pastor whom i can sit down and ask these questions of. Were in a very small town and there are no reformed churches here and we attend churchnbut weve had to settle for the best we can find, which happens a lot as a military family. I also dont have a community. Praise the Lord i have my husband who i ask these questions to about my hate aand he has reassured me thatnhe doesnt think its wrong. I just still feel like a bad person for it sometimes and i certainly dont tell people this other than my husband.

Tim Keller was fond of teaching that choosing powerlessness is godly but I don't think he really believed that at all. He was speaking as a clever serpent who was trying to undermine the Religious Right. It was a tactical move on his part. He knew that in order to move Christians to the Left where he wanted them to be, he had to first alienate them from the Right. He knew it required a multi-stage process, not one fell swoop. That is the light in which his giving up power rhetoric should be seen.

He is making the point that there is a suppression of natural order at work in what kinds of men are allowed to lead these days, and if you don't grasp that you will misunderstand him

How did Joel arrive at the conclusion that the phrase “clung to” should be substituted for “grasped” in Philippians 2:6? The entire passage that verse belongs to reads as follows: “Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, assuming human likeness. And being found in appearance as a human, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death-even death on a cross. Therefore God exalted him even more highly and gave him the name that is above every other name, so that at the name given to Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:5-11, NRSV)
In the context of the passage “grasped” appears to be the better reading because the passage is describing Jesus’ willingness to submit to his father rather than supplant him. As the son of God Jesus would naturally possess his form. It does not follow that he would necessarily possess equal authority which is why that equality would need to be “grasped” at.
Every Greek lexicon I’ve consulted (BDAG, Strong’s, Thayer) suggests that ἁρπαγμὸν means to seize something, which is further supported by the use of the cognate verb ἁρπάζω in the New Testament, as well as its usages in other ancient sources, such as Plutarch (On the Education of Children, chapter 15).
In fact, the only two English translations that translate ἁρπαγμὸν as “cling to” are the NLT and The Message, which are largely dismissed by scholars and rarely preached from by pastors.
Even Bill Mounce, who agrees with Joel’s interpretation of Philippians 2:6, still translates ἁρπαγμὸν as “grasped”, which, to me, demonstrates that to make the passage communicate Jesus’ preexistence requires a theological interpretation that reads more into the passage than what is already there. Skip Moen wrote an excellent article about this called “The Assumed Trinity: A look at Philippians 2:6”.

Not the opposite. You're just misunderstanding because you don't speak Early Modern English despite insisting on reading it. The idea is that of believing that simply being equal to the father rather than superior is unfair. Is communicating the same idea: Jesus wasn't insisting on having a higher Glory but was content / had humility with being in an inferior POSITION despite being equal and no inferior in essence

@@TwentyTwoThirtyThree OK, and how does this answer the question about how there were "Christians" in the "OT" before the Son of God was manifested as the promised Messiah TO COME of Deuteronomy 18:15 and not as the theophany we know as the Angel of the Lord, who we rightly assume was the pre-incarnate Messiah? Where is the appellation "Christian" ever employed in the "OT" (or at least before Acts 11:26)? So, thank you for the suggestion, but I am quite familiar with those passages and this still doesn't answer the question. To call the believers before Christ came "Christians" is therefore anachronistic and rooted more in one's preferred theological system and not from careful exegesis of Scripture itself.
