Today's groups don't hold a candle to the Temptations and Diana Ross and the Supremes. This was the era when the groups had class and the music had meaning and was really music. What classy people and performances! There will never be groups or music like this again!
The performance of the theme song is a testament to the versatility of the Motown brand during the 60's. The TCB theme song is pure Broadway, and both groups do it full justice with clear diction, pure intonation, excellent vocal unisons and fleet choreography. Hats off to both groups!

And yes I was in the studio during much of the taping of the special at NBC in Burbank. It was shot in Studio 3, across from Studio 4 where we were shooting Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In. i remember the spectacular Plexiglas stage, I actually held Diana Ross's sequined dress -- it was heavy! I even stood on the massive Plexiglas stage -- during rehearsals they used a airplane type ramp ladder to get onto the stage -- rather than the horizontal entries seen during the "live"' numbers. Feel a bit bad for the GREAT Paul Williams here....From what I understand, he was dealing with an illness at the time, and was in quite a bit of discomfort during this show....Yet he delivered a powerful, heartfelt and emotional "FOR ONCE IN MY LIFE", which I believe should have been the closing song....Instead, he had to go right into an "upbeat" tune, "I'm Losing You"....Had to be tough for him......AWESOME SINGER.
Awesome dancer too considering he was suffering from painful sickle cell. I wish the miniseries would have shown that he started drinking to deal with the pain.
a breath takingly great copy of the historic NBC 1968 prime time tv special TCB ; the first ever all black program of it's time , a major deal back then, Ross' solo on "Somewhere' mentioning Dr. Martin Luther King when the tragic event was still 'fresh'.. the late Paul Williams brilliant take on "For Once In MY Life"..the entire mid show set by The Temptations.. even Mary Williams stepping out in that blone wig.. it was quite a big deal from in 1968 entranced in front on my tv
it was a big deal...it was so very new..."politics" and racism "...I was only 14, but looking back this was so "daring"...and very "cutting edge" for a major network...I am blessed that I saw it live on the TV...but little did I know or even understand what went on behind the scenes being a white man...I had NO idea of the stuff that went on to get this on TV...and to "make it nice and ...." you know what I am saying, I just loved the music and all...I was just a kid...it hurts me today ....I can never ever walk in a black mans shoes..I never even knew...or understood...the reflections part...now bothers me...it was stereo typical...and I am very sad at that part...but the beauty and the singing to this day brings tears and joy into an old man's heart...it led to me becoming a Disco DJ and opening a gay disco at age 20, 1976...this had an impact on me...thank you ...everyone of those performers...god bless.
I remember when this first aired back in '68. Still mourning the ouster of Ruffin, I was nevertheless excited anticipating seeing it...Had to work that night😣. Was thinking, "boy, I wish they would invent something so I could record the show, then I could see it when I get off."😣 My sister tried to shoot it with her old Super 8 movie camera. Could barely make out the images, and the high-pitched sound audio hurt my ears. Who knew what technology in just a few more years would bring...Go figure😕 Paul's lead on "Respect" is priceless! This is one of the best blendings of his edgy baritone voice on top of that smooth, harmonic Temps' background; doing soul in the sixties! His ad- libs with Diana are all on point, and interwoven seamlessly against the guys, and that hard-driving, rhythmic, Motown backdrop . Further demonstrating his strength as a front man for the group, with a lot of soul, spirit, and showmanship. Wish they had cut this one as a single, sans Miss Ross of course...since she was little more than a distraction, and took precious time away from the other guys being able to stretch out on this timeless Big O classic! Kudos also to NBC for giving this great collection of singers, songs, and musicians the platform from which to display this mass of black talent universally, in a time when that was hardly a popular thing to do.👑🎸🎵
Yes Barry gave Diana soo much showtime... I remember Miss Mary saying it was tuff having Diana be front and center verses them when all of them could sing!
I cry when I hear The Impossible Dream. Paul's voice was so superb, Diana, she showed she was Supreme. You could hear the Supreme harmony, Mary & Cindy. The Temps were so soulful. I am Hispanic but their music stirs my soul. No other group in music will do what they did. They had power, harmony, class and talent. Beyoncé, gaga, Whitney, your all great, but the Supremes & Temptations, no one could touch them! Diana, Mary, Cindy, Dennis, Otis, Paul, Melvin & Eddie, thank you for showing us your talent and greatness. GOD BLESS!
Whitney goes up there with the Supremes and Temptations. She is/was a master of her craft!!!! She sung from her heart and soul. As long as the soul is in the music, thats what makes it good 🎶💖
You have forgotten the other supreme Florence/Flo, she was the original supreme , Berry Gordy pushed her out for Cindy, it is alleged that they had Cindy practicing in private when she was singing in a group with Pattie LaBelle, she left the group suddenly without any notice and joined the Supremes .They really did Flo bad poor girl she took it very hard. I saw Cindy on RUclips in an interview telling the interviewer how she lost everything I'm not sorry for her she should have lost 2times what she lost, that was karma for what they did to Flo. They're all going to pay.
In all fairness to Cindy she was actually a pawn in Berry’s game. I have to say, though that Cindy wouldn’t have fit in with LaBelle’s revamped style and image. I just couldn’t picture Cindy in those costumes and singing Lady Marmalade.
They need to remaster this (including EVERY BIT OF FOOTAGE of rehearsal and numbers that didn't make it on the air) and put it on a DELUXE DVD (along with G.I.T.) Don't you all think so?
This was and is a classic performance by the Temptations and the Supremes that definitely needs to be remastered and digitalized properly and preserved on a Deluxe DVD forever!! Paul's performance Beautiful! And Eddie Kendricks my heart anyway.... WOW!
Where was I when this was televised? OMG This is truly one of the best exhibitions of the artistic talents of the Temptations with the Supremes. Yes, the performance of Paul Williams was the climax--he rought me to tears. What talent...why did they have to go?
Sat here watching this and just about cried from all the memories it brought back. Those were the Temptations I remember; Melvin, Eddie, Otis, Paul and Dennis (David was out by the time I first saw them on TV or in concert). Thanks so much for uploading. Oh yeah, Diana and the Supremes were good, too :)
The crispness of that wonderful voice is at it's peak here.....luv you Diana and much luv to the other gifts on that stage.....RIP to those who've gone on.
When this first broadcast I was in the Air Force stationed in Danang, Vietnam. The Supremes and Temptations TCB concert was a huge event. It was even broadcast on base in Danang and we watched it on a huge screen.
One of the better copies I’ve watched. Paul Williams is top of the heap, and watching Melvin dance made me smile. Too bad it was the Diana Ross show instead of The Supremes.
with todays tech available to anyone with a computer you can download images taken from the set tghat can be diditized to corect any video distortions. just check out berry gordys personal 35 mm photos, those film strips can be used to remaster the show to live like perfection
I was 13 when this aired and it was groundbreaking at the time. But what I didn't pay attention to then was how gifted Paul was as a singer. No wonder this group lasted and produced as much great music as they did. They had so many singers who could have been their group's lead. I remember nothing moved in my community that night.
OMG 47 years ago my older brother and I were planning for weeks to watch this special and we had just moved to a different town and my Mom took me with her to pick up some stuff to decorate for Christmas. Just blocks away from getting home we got lost it was foggy and I knew I was missing this show. We got home AFTER it aired and my Brother said, "oh you missed it" and I whined and cried and never let my Mom forget that one lol. I can laugh now, I was 11 years old and loved the Temps, Loved Dianna Ross and the Supremes so much it killed me. Glad after all these years to accidentally find and enjoy this show. Thank you so much for posting.
I agree ; Diana Ross has a beautiful voice but she seem to perform solo for most of the show.Mary is gorgeous and has an amazing voice and Cindy was a knockout.Nonetheless it was a wonderful show. The Mighty and Handsome Temptations were just incredible... Paul is a dream and Dennis had such a powerful voice💖💖💖
Diana Ross was The Voice, the versatility and persona of the supremes. She made those hits when none of the other girls were even on it. When people make those disingenuous comments about so-called wanting to hear the other background singers as the lead of the group, when clearly Diana Ross was to star; it makes me wonder why when Diana Ross left the group, those same people didn't make that pitch for Mary Wilson when she was the only original supreme left. Furthermore, the same people didn't have a problem making Jean Terrell the star of The Supremes, after Diana left. I'm not saying that the other members didn't have nice voices; however, they were not the money makers.
I remembered when this show aired in 1968 and I ran out the next day and brought the album. In 2020 I'm still watching this program and listening to the album in cyberspace.
I just love this. Back in 'Nam in '69/'70, for music we had AFVN radio and cassettes. Someone would hump the cassette player/radio and someone else would hump the tapes. One of the guys had the TCB tape and we listened to it a lot. I haven't heard it since Vietnam. As I was looking around on Ebay for CD's, I saw a TCB CD. I just had to buy it. A little more searching and I'm glad I found the TCB Show on RUclips. It sure brings back memories.
My parents had a very small record collection when I was a kid in the early seventies and the soundtrack from TCB was for one or another reason part of it. And I fell in love with it the first time I listened to it. And it's still doin' it to me. That's why watching this for the first time has been a piece of magic to me.
Love listening to Diana sing. She's quite lovely and charming....ALOT of talent in that show,. Wish we could go back, and do it again. Thanks for the memories....Diana and SUPREMES, and Temptations.
Mary looked like a glamorous chipmunk with her overbite.....she was pretty but couldn't compete with Diana's exotic looks....Mary was pretty in a eurocentric way, but Diana was something unsual not classically pretty like Mary but had a smoldering petulant sexuality that Mary didn't...and Diana would slay her in their publicity photos in which.Diana always looked smoky...Mary looked pretty....pretty did not win the day...
Maatization she was prettier....period... even Diana knew it... she was the one who gave her the name “the sexy one” .... right out the star mouth ... get over it
Ever see a group take command of a stage...I mean, just TOOK the stage before even singing a single note? The Mighty Tempts! And their steps were nicely understated. At the Reunion at Radio City Music Hall in NY, they also opened with a song I believe was just written for the tour. It was a non Motown arrangement with lyrics that was so cool. The Temptin' Temptations, a once in a lifetime type of group! ALL others learned from them!
I would have paid every penny I have to see this show. Watching my beautiful black people displaying so much talent was an awesome and spiritual experience. Paul was exceptional especially when you consider that he was in pain. His was truly gifted in many ways. Diana has a voice that has yet to be matched, not even by Whitney.
I remember watching the original broadcast of the show. We went out of our way, anytime time we knew the tempts or the tops or anyone from Motown was on tv. This was also Americas' introduction to Dennis Edwards.
The Tempts were in Ed Sullivan in '67 b4 David exited. They were going to be bigger than the Supremes. Would loved to hear him on Impossible Dream. Tears it up on Mrllow Mood.
wow, I remember this vividly as a 14 year old...I was already in love with Diana Ross and The Supremes...and all the music...this needs to be remastered...and preserved...I was just thinking about the show..and viola..here I am...love it...on my color TV at the time...I was transfixed..but the commercials on You Tube are ruining this for me
I remember watching this as a teenage with my mother saying," The Supremes and the Temps will be on TV and you better not do anything to disrupt my watching!" That is when I fell in love with the Supremes...little did she know! LOL! The rest is history...still a HUGE fan...of all eight of them, including the FLOS~
WHAT A SHOW 1968 MY FRESHMAN YEAR IN COLLEGE......WE WERE ALL IN THE DORM SINGING AND DANCING IN THE HALLS......... ...DENNIS KILLED I'M LOSING YOU.... WHAT A VOICE .....WOW
I've seen this show many times, and I feel this was a stellar performance by both groups. My parents grew up listening to this kind of music. I'm glad they introduced me to it.
great performance by Dennis Edwards, but if David Ruffin was there he would've done his patented spin and split on I'm Losin You and probably would've done his split on Ain't Too Proud To Beg also, but anyway the show was great
I love Eddie too, I just wished he had stayed with the group and not left when he did. I miss all the originals ,plus Edwards and Ollie even though they were not origiñals.I think Eddie wanted to rejoined the group but Otis did not want him back and I think that was bad so the latter don't seem to have a good heart.
I disagree I don't think Eddie wanted anything do whit them after the Paul situation,Eddie could have easily came back if he wanted too,no replacement could touch him
Great to relive memories from a long time ago. Fantastic show , the outfits reflect the time with very strong colors. The performance very vibrant and professional , and the stage is unique . thank you for posting this video .

Who knew what technology in just a few more years would bring...Go figure😕
Paul's lead on "Respect" is priceless!
Whitney Houston's voice IS more beautiful than ALL the supremes, combined! There is NO voice like Whitney Houston's. Periodt.
In all fairness to Cindy she was actually a pawn in Berry’s game. I have to say, though that Cindy wouldn’t have fit in with LaBelle’s revamped style and image. I just couldn’t picture Cindy in those costumes and singing Lady Marmalade.
I know i'm Losing You (Tempts) They Kicked It All The Way Up!!! Go Dennis!!
Eddie Kendricks...talented...fortunate....handsome
Thomas Norman isn't he though? just gorgeous💙💜💙💜
He was so talented and beautiful. RIP Eddie.
@@autumnrayn390 That's our Eddie Bear!🥰
They need to remaster this (including EVERY BIT OF FOOTAGE of rehearsal and numbers that didn't make it on the air) and put it on a DELUXE DVD (along with G.I.T.) Don't you all think so?
Yes
Abso friggin loutely!... the solos of Mary and Cindy were also left out of the televised TV Special.
I'm with ya!
I would love that .
@@michaela.grimaldi6286 What solo's did Mary & Cindy do?
I always liked Paul the most but lord he done bought me to tears he sung the hell out that song 🤍😫
Dennis Edwards is a Bad Brother he song the hell outta I'm Losing You!!!!
marcus rodgers he made that song his.
@@TheAjbrown661 who
This was and is a classic performance by the Temptations and the Supremes that definitely needs to be remastered and digitalized properly and preserved on a Deluxe DVD forever!! Paul's performance Beautiful! And Eddie Kendricks my heart anyway.... WOW!
The greatest TV show of 1968!!!
RIP IN PEACE MR DENNIS EDWARDS & THE REST OF THE PASS TEMPTATIONS & OUR LIVING MR OTIS WILLIAMS ...
Where was I when this was televised? OMG This is truly one of the best exhibitions of the artistic talents of the Temptations with the Supremes. Yes, the performance of Paul Williams was the climax--he rought me to tears. What talent...why did they have to go?
Andie Z 1968 around Thanksgiving time!
December 9, 1968
Sat here watching this and just about cried from all the memories it brought back. Those were the Temptations I remember; Melvin, Eddie, Otis, Paul and Dennis (David was out by the time I first saw them on TV or in concert). Thanks so much for uploading. Oh yeah, Diana and the Supremes were good, too :)
I saw this when it originally aired on TV.
matrox so did l. It was awesome
The crispness of that wonderful voice is at it's peak here.....luv you Diana and much luv to the other gifts on that stage.....RIP to those who've gone on.
They had to sing in a key comfortable for DR. Paul was able to accommodate her. David did like that when he was on the Sullivan show..
When this first broadcast I was in the Air Force stationed in Danang, Vietnam. The Supremes and Temptations TCB concert was a huge event. It was even broadcast on base in Danang and we watched it on a huge screen.
The Temptations were sharp as a tack in that gold from top to toe.
@Judy Gaines grestgresgreat
One of the better copies I’ve watched. Paul Williams is top of the heap, and watching Melvin dance made me smile. Too bad it was the Diana Ross show instead of The Supremes.
😂😮
CE
another Diana Ross hater....she's a super icon get over it...
@@MaatizationI don’t hate Diana. I hate what they did to the other Supremes.
with todays tech available to anyone with a computer you can download images taken from the set tghat can be diditized to corect any video distortions. just check out berry gordys personal 35 mm photos, those film strips can be used to remaster the show to live like perfection
I remember seeing this as a little kid on a black and white TV around Thanksgiving, 1968....
Me too😁 Sure did
I was 13 when this aired and it was groundbreaking at the time. But what I didn't pay attention to then was how gifted Paul was as a singer. No wonder this group lasted and produced as much great music as they did. They had so many singers who could have been their group's lead. I remember nothing moved in my community that night.
I was 17 and the world was getting ready to be mine! Sound of Young Black America, but multi- racial too to bottom.
How come you know it wasnt an accident ??????????????? it was meant you missed it the 1st time second time around heard that song Lol.
Bobbie 1957 Wow great story. glad you got to see this special.
Mary and Cindy are rocking it on Keep Me Hangin' On
Remember seeing this show at the age of 11...sounds just as good now!!!
They were amazing in so many ways. They had the entire package
That harmony was money.
The other girls were thrown in the background and its a shame because they were extremely talented. Wish I could hear them more.
Temptations such precision with their choreography and harmony!!! Absolute performers and they're loving!!
thanks to Mr cholly Adkins he kept they're moved right
timothyy pearson You are absolutely correct.
timothyy pearson
Thanks to Paul Williams, he was responsible for his group’s dance moves not Cholly Atkins.
@@arlena532 They both was
as they say, they don't make them like this anymore
I just love this. Back in 'Nam in '69/'70, for music we had AFVN radio and cassettes. Someone would hump the cassette player/radio and someone else would hump the tapes. One of the guys had the TCB tape and we listened to it a lot. I haven't heard it since Vietnam.
As I was looking around on Ebay for CD's, I saw a TCB CD. I just had to buy it. A little more searching and I'm glad I found the TCB Show on RUclips. It sure brings back memories.
I can defiantly identify with you, THANK YOU for YOUR SERVICE and GOD BLESS.
My parents had a very small record collection when I was a kid in the early seventies and the soundtrack from TCB was for one or another reason part of it. And I fell in love with it the first time I listened to it. And it's still doin' it to me.
That's why watching this for the first time has been a piece of magic to me.
I watched this live when I was a little kid. It was great. Thank you RUclips.
So did I. I was young, but I remember it.
Made 35 years before I was born and this is still my favorite special ♥️
Diana Ross and The Supremes number one in The World.
Love listening to Diana sing. She's quite lovely and charming....ALOT of talent in that show,. Wish we could go back, and do it again. Thanks for the memories....Diana and SUPREMES, and Temptations.
Mary was the eye candy of girl groups!
Maatization she was prettier....period... even Diana knew it... she was the one who gave her the name “the sexy one” .... right out the star mouth ... get over it
Mary was beautiful n everybody knew it
Yes she was!!!!
Mary was HOTT! Diana looked crazy with that 3 wigs in 1! Cindy was pretty and precise with the choregraphy
I remember this album and watching this on tv. Wow!
man i'm getting up there,i actually remember when GIRL GROUPS sang fully clothed and You couldnt take Your eyes off of them.😎
Ever see a group take command of a stage...I mean, just TOOK the stage before even singing a single note? The Mighty Tempts! And their steps were nicely understated. At the Reunion at Radio City Music Hall in NY, they also opened with a song I believe was just written for the tour. It was a non Motown arrangement with lyrics that was so cool. The Temptin' Temptations, a once in a lifetime type of group! ALL others learned from them!
Paul you just made my heart melt.
On this song.
I love the temps especially Paul and Eddie ❤️ Paul stole the show on this one with his singing, dancing, and funny moments
I can watch Paul & (David Ruffin before his departure) all day, Paul is my favorite too...Although, I love em all
Best TV Special EVER !!!
I was a child but remember this like if it was yesterday.. Always loved T.C.B 💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾
1968 what a wonderful year.
I LOVE how Paul Williams looks at Ms. Ross at 50:13..."You've got this song and I am your backup"...he relents right there!
She better be glad she was singing with Paul and not David, he would have blown her away.
David Ruffin was always my preference if compared to Dennis Edwards. But Dennis got out of his body on "I'm Losing You"
I would have paid every penny I have to see this show.
@@glenndarien2767 They were never bigger than The Supremes. What delusional world are you living in?
@@EricBrownBey they weren't bigger but you don't have to be delusional to imagine that based on their performance here
Paul Williams was anointed., man!!
Yes!!!!!
He really really was, his voice was was like thunder when he sang and I loved listening to him speak.
I actually remember seeing this as a kid. I miss variety shows! Much better than the crap they have on now.
Please do a Blu-ray release of this!
wow, I remember this vividly as a 14 year old...I was already in love with Diana Ross and The Supremes...and all the music...this needs to be remastered...and preserved...I was just thinking about the show..and viola..here I am...love it...on my color TV at the time...I was transfixed..but the commercials on You Tube are ruining this for me
Not only did they do a TV special they also have this on an album. I’m fortunate to say that I have this album and I would not trade it for anything.
thanks and r.i.p., guys. peace. flo rules!
Two of Motown’s most popular groups
wasn't born when this was out but I love it, I found this album on vinyl at a used record store

This is the first time i've seen this whole performance..Motown hits gives you a good vibe everytime you hear any song ❤🙏
Ms Ross, what a talent!
great performance by Dennis Edwards, but if David Ruffin was there he would've done his patented spin and split on I'm Losin You and probably would've done his split on Ain't Too Proud To Beg also, but anyway the show was great
Yeah but he wouldn’t have sang that song like that on I’m losing you. Like not even close. Dennis ripped the hell out of that. Best version by far

I love Eddie! 👏🏿💯👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿💯
I'M A DETROITER !!! WE were sooo Proud of them when this was released Dec 1968 !!!
Oliver Nevels Michigan all the way! Bay City guy myself but a Michigander none of the less
My Dad was a proud Detroiter through and through. He’d tell me stories about going to the Motown Revues held at the Fox. I love The Temptations because of him. May he continue to RIH.
