My guruji always told me that only the fingers should move while playing, with the wrist and arm relatively steady and unmoving. Many modern tabla players have too much gyrations as you correctly point out.
I was very lucky to learn Tabla from his grandson Shri Ajay Mishra ji. However, Ajay sir also left the world in 2013. My heartfelt tributes to both of the veterans🙏
The incredible Pandit Samta Prasad. To me, he brought-out his best when accompanying Ustad Vilayat Khan. The album " Mian Ki Malhar " with Ustad Imrat Khan, is their greatest .
I will give you constructive criticism on the sound. It's clear but it would be better if you increased the treble. I have had time hearing the tin and tun sound. Actually by treble I mean upper midrange. Just the midrange in general. Especially the dheneghene sound is pretty faint.
Uniform & cap (had guts, tanpura substitute of Mrs.Gauri Saha, Jhankar): Matha oto...hole ami aar...(P.C.Sorcar tabla player, a gentleman), BUT he changed (Allah Rakha Dyna kurkuri, Baya only dha, no practical rela possible), "class started with Ud.Masit/Pt.Jnanbabu guru, rough-n-tough, and Ud.Karamat Tullah/Kha-Saheb, sweet coat of butter". P.S.: Allah Rakha Qureshi told Zakir (Anupam's tutor on Zakir: dhe-re / hand fingers quite stretched out) to follow, Thirakwa for clarity with dhe-re, followed by speed , and for baya rela, Shamta Prasad (many videos, even Baje Sargam Des raag Zakir baya.../ja jay ta aar firey aase na: M/Jivan Mohini Ghosh Mkt.). Kha-Saheb/Karamat Tullah admirer Kishan Maharaj (owned wrestling club, not really for profit) for finger strokes & politics: "Baas, Pahalwaan (for Ustad) accha hona chahiye!". Jyoti Basu-Mamta Banerjee recalled. Kolkata, India, & SHARE globally plz.❤
