I never planned on having a kid, but if I did, I would hope one day they would take the time to restore their Dad's tools he used to get stronger, and pass the iron down to their kids. Nice video man. :)
I'm the kid and that's what I did today, my dad's weights have been sitting there for the last 20 years, and as a 16 year old who doesn't have money to buy more weights, going to the attic and finding at leat 30 extra KG was like finding gold.
A good trick I have used on rusty old metal stuff is to buy a wire wheel that has a drill attachment on it from Harbor Freight for a couple bucks, make sure you get the steel bristled ones and not the brass. The brass will get so hot that it will actually start plating your piece with brass as the bristles melt. Which is pretty cool if that's your plan but not great for most pieces lol. Chuck that bad boy into a fairly high RPM drill and blast away. It cleans stuff up in just a few minutes. It took me about 5 minutes to get every speck of rust and grine of a 50lb post vice that had been laying on a barn floor for probably 100 years. You need to be sure to wear safety classes and a mask/bandanna because it kicks crap up like crazy, but I really does work fast. I used to dabble in blacksmithing and used this method to clean all sorts of stuff. The weights came out looking great, pretty awesome setup with lots of sentimental value. Bet it's coming in handy right now....
pressure washer works wonders too on the narrow nozzle as u can, or a trip to the mechanics or fabricators who will sandblast it for you , they wouldnt charge much at all since itsa 10 min job and is cheaper than buying all that oil and vinegar etc
That's sentimental man fair play some thing's u cant buy like the history , the story that these weights tell....when your older you will fully understand the value I think you're already understanding the value for your sons, tell them the history the story show the photographs etc Great video I really enjoyed Stay safe from Ireland 💪💪😎😎🏋️♂️🏋️♂️
This is a beautiful legacy, and you've done a good job putting it all back in order. Really nicely done! Man...and what a blessing with this cellar! You're really lucky, you know that?
HF hellava restore video. Damn good set of ol skool iron. Lucky fella you are. You can do the exact same to them grey hex dumbells. I’m doing that to my collection. Cheers.
I built my home gym with used equipment. Some of the plates and solid DBs were fairly rusty. I just took off the worst of the rust with a wire wheel and spray painted with Rustoleum. As long as they are kept indoors that's all that's needed. You did a beautiful job, just seems like overkill to me, lol. Did you clean all the oil off before painting? Think that cooler is ruined too.
I prefer to leave all mine rusty. That way they are still considered original. Once you repaint them they are considered restored. . If that's what you like and your keeping them. That's fine. You can buy cast iron black polish and you don't have to paint them. But.... Its whatever you like.
Damn jealous of all of those dumb bells. I only have a set of 135lbs that I got from Barry Epps back in the early 90's that are similar to the ones at 8:21. I don't really have the room in my man cave for more weights but I would find some room.
Bobby Digital But you can’t track the progress in those increments. Because the weights don’t weigh what you’ve painted on them. So your tracking is off completely.
1EVILZ06-Well sure, marking the weights their exact poundage is more accurate, but for guys like me, I don’t consider my gains to be “gains” unless it’s at least a 5 pound improvement. So if I mark a 66 pound dumbbell at 65, it won’t matter if it’s off by a pound because I won’t recognize my improvement until I’m pushing up 70.
Just shows iron plates are for life ( not just for Christmas) and the best investment you will ever buy without your health all the money in the world is useless. Still have my weights and kettle bells after 15 years used daily and even though not as clean as was just as functional as the day I invested and probably worth more than I paid originally.
Most people would consider that junk. Others it's a passed down legacy. Not to mention it can cost a lot to buy weights like that. You got them free. Now,,hopefully you will finally start putting them to use. Looks like you have some catching up to do. Maybe if you had done more research before cleaning them, you could have found some different processes that could have worked better for you. Such as an inexpensive electro plating to remove the rust.
Bro pumping iron is like world greatful thing because its what make us one different from crowded. You have all gym equipment you r lucky u have paradise
@@lukemathews1203 The way you did it is great and I bet the iron is 'healthier' now. Probably less chance of rusting in the future. I just got some plates i cleaned yesterday and going to paint soon. Probably skipping the 3in1 stage cause I'm a lazy bastard lol
Hi, just wana know....would I really need to put clear coat at the end (or after the 2nd/3rd coats of paint) or would I need to put clear anti corrosion spray? I heard is optional on each/both ideas. Reason why I'm asking is I already sprayed two coats of Primer then 2 coats of Dulux Enamel Paint over it. I was told Enamel has rust protection.
I would assume its best to first spray with anti-corrosion spray and then with a regular paint, but i would not worry about it, the plates will probably last years without rust
I never planned on having a kid, but if I did, I would hope one day they would take the time to restore their Dad's tools he used to get stronger, and pass the iron down to their kids. Nice video man. :)

Brother it's not only gym equipment, treasure for u...
Are relics.
These weights are freaking costly, you got a treasure bro.
And now ruined with spray paint
I feel all the weights that anyone owns should be treasured. The return you get by using them on a consistent basis makes them something to be valued.
rushv825 I couldn’t agree more!!!
Agree 👍👍
Them weights not only help you physically but mentally aswell, lifting iron will save you thousands on psychiatrist bills

Beautiful job would love to see them in action my friend. Props to your dad I wish mines was around.
I’m certain that act of kindness for your dad made him not only proud of you but probably brought back some nostalgic memories. You’re a good son.
Really good job mate, and I love the look of the old school weights.
Awesome work. It's great that you are able to refresh your Dads weights.
Very inspiring. My weights are more than 30 years old. I hope one day my granddaughter takes good care of them once i have gone.
You did a great job, i bet it means alot to your dad too knowing that you look after and appreciate the stuff he passes on to you, well done man
I remember doing this myself years ago and glad to see you didn't do all the mistakes I did lol. Great job 👍🏽.

This is heaven , n yess better than gold n diamonds , the pure iron 💪💪💪💪
Amazing job. I just did mine but it wasn’t nearly as much weights. I could just imagine the time and effort it took for you. 💯
This is really cool I’m gonna try this on some old barbell weights I found in my basement the other day great video 👍
Those OG Dumbbells are badass!!!!!! Wish I could find some

Thanks for sharing. Helpful video
Tidy job .my weights are in the same state but I dont mind them been rusty and gnarly, maybe one day I'll clean them up,,maybe not.
Great job lo que tienes es una mina de oro👍
I read restoring my old dad’s weights🙄😅
You have the best restoration gym equipment video
Thanks!!
i have new commercial dumbbells but man nothing compares to those old style dumbbells, been looking for a set like those.
Man thats how i got all my weights from my uncles , dad, to grandpa lifting. Very inspiring bro 👌
That’s awesome 😎. Good job 👍🏻
Great collection and cool vid 💪
It’s because he’s a wrestler. That’s why he’s so awesome
Thank you man
Nice. They came out good.
I would like to see you working out in those dumb bells
I restored mine with rustoleum hammered. But then i found rustoleum 2x flat primer and paint and the result is amazing

Grendelbc Yes I did! The cooler took a lot of extra time to clean and endless scrubbing after the restoration!
They turned out awesome!!!
Awesome restoration man. Makes them worth their lift again.
What an awesome restoration job!!
Damn good job man 💪
It would look really cool if you painted some of them full grey or didn’t paint them just took off the rust to make them look old

Right now you the hottest cat on the block, suddenly everybody wants to come over and hang out with you
I want to see your dad reaction
Great job kid!
Man I wished I a brother like you
Merry Christmas Dad! Good job..
nice work man!!
You have some solid ass weights there. Amazing work!
Should’ve marked the “48” and “66” pound dumbbells as 50 and 65, besides that, good work brother.
Why? If they are 48lbs they should read 48lbs. If they are 66lbs they should read 66lbs.
1EVILZ06-Because tracking weekly progress in increments of 5, 10, 15, etc is more convenient, now obviously that’s just my opinion.
Bobby Digital But you can’t track the progress in those increments. Because the weights don’t weigh what you’ve painted on them. So your tracking is off completely.

6:00 love that song.
Okay just by looking at these dumbbells I just want to ask you how strong is your dad bought like 50 lb weight bro how stongyour dad bro
Мне старое нравиться больше, чувствуешь время когда трогаешь

I made concrete weights at home , I'm still young so i hope my brother uses them
Loved to restore it too! And use it ofcourse

Great job!
Did you clean the 3 in 1 oil off before painting it? If not, that would make me happy, because I would like to be lazy and skip that step.
I'm so jealous!
Hella Kool!
They look sick, great work
Dammmn .. amazing.. great work ..

MR. AAKASH Yes I am very blessed to have them!
I’m kinda disappointed we never saw dad’s weight especially being that it was a problem and needed to be restored
Should have sprayed red oxide on them first then painted them, to preserve the steel alot better and longer, good video though mate👍
Old school weights just hit different
I love! the noise the old plates make when there's more than one on both sides
Curious how necessary the 3-in-1 step is. Wouldn’t the “lubricated” surface make it harder for paint to bond?
The 3 in 1 really helped get all the rust off the weights. How do you think I should have done it differently?

Just use carnuba wax/paste wax on the paint - just like a car
Can you ask your dad how he made those dumbbells? I’m trying to do something like that myself
