- This cute rockhopper penguin chick is 33 days old and the first rockhopper chick raised at the Saint Louis Zoo. He (or she) was hatched by his parents and lived with them at their Penguin & Puffin Coast habitat until he began the adventurous (and natural) sport of rock hopping. Even with parental supervision, climbing the rocks can be dangerous for such a small bird. When the chick was about 25 days old, the keepers moved the whole family to a special area behind the scenes so that the chick would be safe from falling. The parents, though, preferred the familiar ground of Penguin & Puffin Coast, so they moved back after a few days. The keepers will continue the parents job of feeding the baby until he grows his swimming feathers and can re-join the group.
