Francis L’Olonnais was likely born as Jacques Jean David Nau in Sables-d’Olonne, France around 1634. He was transported to the Caribbean as an indentured servant and upon being released, around 1660, he travelled to Hispaniola where he became a buccaneer. L’Olonnais worked on other ships and distinguished himself to the extent that the governor of Tortuga gave him a ship.

Just gonna go out and say this man in history was a sick S.O.B. but Pirates that nobody talks about would be a good series
Now this is a good day. A Pirate's Port upload.
A fitting end for such a barbaric pirate. Great video!
Thanks!
As a precious metals collector. I love hearing the amount of silver stack up 😎👌
Nice a Pirate Port to watch as I drink my morning coffee. Hope you are doing well and thankz for the video.
Thanks man, you too!
François l'Olonnais has always been my favorite pirate
Love the channel keep up the good work :)
Being from Nicaragua it is awesome to hear pirate history in the region
Great video and great channel!
As a Frenchman, I am a little upset that you call him "Francis", because he is known as "François", pronounced "Fransswa", which is a completely different first name than Francis. But his real name is still a mystery, so I forgive you x). He was called "L'Olonnais" or "L'Olonnois" because he was born in Les Sables d'Olonne (or Olonne), a small town in the west of France which was a rich and active port at the time.
He also achieved most of his successes with the help of Michel Le Basque, another famous corsair who seized several Spanish ships, including at least one galleon.
Keep up the good work ;)
Brutal time period. I always think the Spanish leadership was complacent at this point in history so that they no longer invested in the training of soldiers and sailors to be successful defeating their enemies. L'Olonnais ended up being what's for dinner for the natives! Lol
Now there's some real honest to goodness pirate blood and guts! Great channel ...
Another great video!
Thanks!
Love this chanel best pirate chanel ever
Thanks bro. Great work
Phenominal work! One thing to say for sure, pirates weren't very pelasant people.
Thank you! Gotta reinstall discord on the new comp, please keep a good eye on the port!
L'Ollonais had it coming. The dude was a savage and he met up with a group who were far more brutal than him.
This guy might be the most savage I’ve yet heard about via the channel. Top work 👌🏽
Thanks very much!
One Piece talks about him (one of the main characters is named after him)
Maybe “rarely” would be a better description.
Should have quit while he was ahead, but that's the way these pirates' lives often go.
Looking for stories on my great grandfather 8 times removed I think Pierre Masionat dit baptiste Pirate for france in the 1600s
The flail of the Spaniards, ripped out a man's heart and took a bite right in front of him
If someone ever cuts your heart out while you're alive (you live for a few seconds after that) spit in their face.
You're definitely going to die, you may as well die a man.
Cool video, I have a question, are there still places from the pirate periode that are in the old condision and I can go to?
Great video about one of my favorite Pirate. Keep up the great work! Love this channel
Great story. Absolute 10/10
Thanks very much!
Read about him the first time when I got "Pirates!" for my C64. The manual was full of amazing stories like his. Clearly a brutal man, and karma does seem to be a thing.
Loved that game!
Francis l’Olonnais is the kind of person, that you hopefully never encounter.
but he might come in handy if he's a friend lol
Good grief. I don't know what's worse - how brutal pirates could be or how fast they spent such hard won and unheard of wealth. 🤔😳😩 They could've lived like kings for the rest of their lives but nope!
Looks like the Spanish finally got a taste of revenge
Im watching this in my French class
Jean Lafitte would be interesting 🧐
While I never knew that much about him I still found the video interesting however it seems as though Francois and his terror is compared to the Spanish much like sir Francis Drake who terrorized Spanish shipping at the time
Sometime a video on how pirates traded their stolen goods for money would be great! I was always like "but how did the goods get sold / exchanged, etc? Also, if pirates could spend their loot in pirate ports in just 3 weeks, how did the places they spent the loot get money for it? And were there any port businesses that got rich from serving the pirates? Or are details like that like at to history? I guess I'd like to know of someone who cashed in, lived a legit and wealthy life after it all and actually benefited from all the looting, killing, brutality and hard living conditions.
But then maybe they were discreet and that's why their stories are unknown.
I mean, I guess you'd have to lie about your name and business and background wherever you settled down.
there are a few pirates that retired or just disappeared. it was rare but not unheard of. and you are right, they weren't telling people about their line of work or writing memoirs. if they were caught they were going to be hanged so they certainly weren't interested in bragging.
as far as the other question, just like today there were merchants that were willing to deal with them. they knew but they didn't know.. it wouldn't have been discussed, but they would have had a pretty good idea of what happened.
as far as businesses that got rich from them sure! taverns, brothels, tailors, etc. - when they came in to port flush with money it impacted the economy as a whole.
@@ThePiratesPort Thanks! 🤗
Fantastic story, he was absolutely crazy! When he was taking loot with Henry Jennings! He'd hit the beaches ahead of his men unloading his guns screaming profanity! What a sight that would have been🤣
what was the reason you got into pirates? im very curious bc i love hearing abt this typa stuff myself.
So this is who is Zorro of onepiece was inspired.
Lotta details left out here. He cut off those heads himself, for example.made a pyramid of them with his own sword. This is like a child friendly storytelling that only tells an eigth of the reality. He was torturing a fisherman for fun when he got told of the governors ship after him.
One important thing I’m not sure was mentioned is that part of the reason he hated the Spanish so much and was so cruel to them was he had heard about their extreme cruelty to the native peoples of the new world, so it’s ironic he himself was killed by Natives and their Spanish Allies.
No new videos???
That l'Olonnais guy was a real jerk
Fitting he tore people apart and tortured them with his sword and the native people did the same to him just goes to show you reap what you sow!!
L'ollonais witnessed how other spaniards treated slaves/peasants when he was still a slave... I believe all of the torture method he did we're from the spaniards who were treated them like shit... He just inherited they're actions which makes him no different to them...
Still i find it magical that all of his peers would be dead after the massacre from spanish ambush and he was the only one who survived... And go on commanding armies of criminals who were just like him... But just like blackbeard, every greàt adventure will have it's end.
What a bamf.
More vids pls :)
